Hey, I'm the lead (and pretty much only) developer and maintainer of Kilt, and I'd like to say thanks for making this video :] I wrote a entire few paragraphs about Kilt's existence, but I accidentally hit the cancel button before I could copy it. _Why doesn't KZbin have a confirmation to cancel like Mobile does >:V_ I'm gonna rewrite parts of it, but it's not going to have the same points as it originally did unfortunately. *If you're just gonna comment "not gonna read all that", stop right there. It's just not productive.* I noticed people in the comments wondering why this exists if Connector already does, and why split the community further with Kilt and Connector existing. This project started before Connector was even a thing. Kilt started on Dec 29th, 2022, whereas the main Connector project was from May 26th, 2023. However, I believe Connector was being worked on under a completely different name, called SteelwoolMC, it was way less popular, and was still in a broken state itself. The main reason why Kilt is so behind Connector is because of the sheer amount of work that needs to be done for Kilt to work. Connector has a lot of work itself, but Kilt has even more to do, especially for only one person. As of right now, Kilt is only about 39% done, having only reimplemented 257 out of the 660 patches within Forge. But I don't believe the existence of both should split the community. The community is already really divided as-is (Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, Quilt), and what Kilt and Connector are intended to do is to bridge the modloaders together, allowing them to coexist. I believe both Kilt and Connector's devs are capable of working together to benefit each other. In fact, Kilt benefits from Connector's existence, as Kilt utilizes a library from Connector for remapping Forge mods. Some people like Forge, some people like Fabric. I'd rather people be capable of choosing, rather than only one existing over the other. My own reasoning behind disliking Forge is the dev experience with it, but NeoForge has improved on it slightly. Other devs might dislike Fabric because of them disliking its dev experience, and that's fine. Some people have their own preferences, some devs don't have time to learn a different mod loader, and that's perfectly fine. Choices exist for our preferences, while things like Kilt and Connector exist to allow stuff outside of our preferences to work within our preferences, or even the other way around. If it benefits everyone, I don't see why it shouldn't exist, or why only one has to exist. A perfect example behind this thought process is the entire light/dark mode debate. Some people argue in favour of only dark mode, and some argue for only light mode. I used to be an "only dark mode" person myself. However, after becoming friends with someone who has really severe astigmatism to the point of migraines with dark mode, it has completely changed my worldview. They advocate for choices between the two, because they know that others experience the same thing they do but with light mode instead. I still prefer dark themes, but I'll still largely advocate for both themes to exist within a program, rather than only one over the other.

Sheesh! First, I wanna thank you for all the hard work you have put into this mod, especially considering how vastly different Forge is to Fabric. This isn't really a counterpoint, but more of an opinionated clarification. Right now, there's only really 2-3 concurrent modloaders, them being (Neo)Forge and Fabric. Now I know of the existence of Rift and Quilt, but Rift is only available for 1.13 and isn't updated, whilst Quilt is basically irrelevant in the modern modding world. In fact, one of the few mod creators that was formally Quilt exclusive now is back to Fabric, simply due to how inaccessible Quilt is. Their entire existence is questionable too. This is a copy paste of something I posted previously, but here's some quick modloader lore since version 1.0. Forge was the first major modloader that caught on. It was the only one until 1.12.2, and then development basically halted for a while. A little project called Rift was made because people wanted a modloader for 1.13. It was good and a few mods like Litematica were made for it, but it never got past 1.13. Fabric was created as a sort of spiritual successor to Rift (although they share minimal any code) for similar reasons. Because it got a fresh start but could build off the foundations of Forge, they got the chance to make it very easy to code on (unlike Forge), and more performant. Until then, these were the only 2 modloaders, with Forge being more complete & customizable, having a bigger amount of mods due to it being older, yet harder to code for, and Fabric being growing & lightweight and easier to code for, but with a lacking yet growing amount of mods. Slowly, Fabric gained traction amongst developers, to the point where it became nearly as complete & customizable as Forge, while still being easier to code on and having more performance. Newer & older coders alike started to code on Fabric, developing for both modloaders using something called "Architectury API", an API that equalizes and standardises code between Forge & Fabric. The modding scene was at peace, as both modloaders got nearly equal support. Then, some drama happened with the Fabric devs. Some of the developers didn't like the way the workflow worked, and had their feelings hurt by the rest of the team because they didn't want to add some feature they liked. Around the same time, a "trans activist group" went into the Fabric server and started to cause some noise and drama. When a moderator unbanned someone who was against them, this made some of the devs even more mad. So instead of making a mod to add said new features, and quitting the "hostile environment", they made an entirely new modloader. Its name: Quilt Quilt was a modloader that shared some of the downsides of Forge that ran Fabric mods. It was harder to code on than Fabric, slower than Fabric, and had the much smaller library of Fabric & Quilt mods. It only caught traction by 1 or 2 developers, who eventually got tired of the difficulty and left. The Quilt team to this day are very elitist and think their modloader is the ultimate solution to modding. Quilt is mostly dead right now, not even updated past 1.20.6. Some more drama happened with the Forge devs this time, however it was the whole team going against the owner of the project, LexManos. He was very hostile to the rest of the contributors and everyone hated him, so the whole Forge team (excpet for Lex himself) left and made a new modloader named NeoForge. It is a copy of Forge without LexManos. It runs Forge mods equally as well, and the only difference is that NeoForge is being updated, whilst Forge is basically dead. So the modding scene right now is: Forge, the long standing, well supported, but no longer unupdated modloader Fabric, the lightweight and coder friendly, yet more recent and slightly unpopular Quilt, the crybaby copy of Fabric that no one uses NeoForge, the copy of Forge that is still being updated to this day. Rift, the unupdated modloader that set the base for Fabric So yeah, I just wanted to add that the modloader unity conflict is mostly between Forge and (Neo)Forge. And yes, I 100% agree that Synitra and Kilt are very impressive and useful projects. One again, me and everyone in the modding community appreciate modders like you. Thank you.

As beneficial as this seems for the mod ecosystem, the point of Connector was to allow all mod developers to migrate to Fabric without worrying about leaving Forge users that can't switch yet behind. This mod is of course, awesome, and we should not prevent or discourage awesome things, but it is sad that this will likely stall the migration to Fabric again. What's worse is that this mod should introduce at least some of, likely most of, the performance cost of Forge on top of Fabric and if KiltMC is accepted as a long term solution it will deprive Fabric of it's biggest selling point, even further staling the migration
@Th3Adjuster2 ай бұрын
yea thats what i was thinking, new mod developers switching to fabric are likely gonna be turned away by this, honestly this mod is more of short term solution over long term progress typa thing and its jus gonna hurt the modding scene
@cubed.public2 ай бұрын
I don’t think so If more people are turning towards fabric because it can run of forge (which I don’t really believe but let’s assume) then allowing forge mods to run on fabric just reinforces fabric They chose fabric because of simplicity, efficiency, and capability for multiloaders. Saying forge can run on fabric won’t change that, if they want to develop forge then they would have from the beginning Personally I think it has the opposite effect and I’m honestly confused why some people think otherwise. The entire point of people still developing forge is because people still use forge. If fabric modpacks are viable as long as some mods are forge, then more people will develop fabric/multiloader Yes it’s true that it’ll be laggier, but what I’m confused about is why you’re blaming kilt. Sinytra has it so mods that could be optimized in fabric are used on forge, which defeats the entire point of fabric being efficient. Like is your goal for everyone to develop for fabric, then it becomes useless as a modpack is forced to be forge?
@BluSpringg2 ай бұрын
The thing about Kilt is that it's intended to be a "no other way" kinda solution. I actively advocate for the Fabric versions of the mods to be used because they would likely have additional fixes that Kilt wouldn't be able to replicate. I say this as a person who actively ports lots and lots of mods to Fabric for friends. Alex's Mobs, Lost Cities, Fossils & Archeology, Relics, Ice and Fire. If the mod developer already didn't intend for a Fabric release, then I don't see how Kilt would be harmful to that. Take Create for Fabric for example. Their team is largely the reason why Kilt is able to work well, and Kilt cannot replace Create for Fabric with Create for Forge purely because the Fabric version has tons of work on top of it for Fabric, that Kilt could never replicate.

To now KiltMC for modern versions with Forge/Fabric there has been a lot of cool bridging the gap type modloader projects out there. Besides Intermediaqry (1.2.5 Forge on 1.7.10) and APortingCore (1.8 Forge on 1.7.10) as brief projects.

Fabricated Legacy Forge was actually what made me realize Kilt was possible! Without knowing about that mod's existence, it probably would've taken much longer for me to begin Kilt.
