We just installed the Pole Pal USA 7pc Dump Trailer Wiring Set on our PJ Dump Trailer and couldn't be happier! Their kit uses 2 gage wire and Anderson quick connects. We have tried adding a solar panel but it still wasn't enough. We have 3 work trucks and 3 trailers (dump, equipment and enclosed) and plan to install the truck side wiring on all 3 trucks and the trailer side wiring on all 3 trailers. It is the best solution I have found by far! We will use the trucks battery and alternator to supply power to the pump on the dump trailer, winch on the equipment trailer and interior lighting, outlets and accessories on the enclosed trailer.

Great job, I was considering not having a battery on my drop trailer build, I'm convinced. I just replaced an old buz box with extended leeds, may be worth fifty bucks, now the parts on it are worth more to me. Drop trailers get operated about as much as the tow vehicle starter motor itself so the standard electrics should be fine. Just need to rig for multiple trucks. I may make the leeds and connector bracket quick change. KZbin has brought together so many thinkers. Thank you.

The actual dump draws about 200 amps when it's loaded. The 12000 lb winch I have on it will sometimes trip the 300 amp breaker I installed in the engine compartment. I leave the truck running when I'm operating the trailer so as to not draw the battery down so much that I can't start the truck back up. 👍

Great video! And even better idea!! Can you explain a little more on the inline circuit breakers inside the hydraulic pump box, and possibly post a link on them please ? I plan on doing all this to my dump trailer and installing a winch so I might as well do it right the first time. Thanks in advance

And also how you hooked your winch up to the whole set up as well. Thanks again

Nice upgrade. I did this a number of years ago to my trailer. I built a 6' x 10' dump trailer this summer and used the same setup. Works great!

So now you still need 12 volt power to keep your trailer DOT legal for your disconnect for your brakes to apply if your becomes unhooked when on the road

Yes
@dallasbaiton32346 жыл бұрын
I do plan to do the up grade that you have done but i plan on keeping the battery in place on the trailer . This way I will not have to add a small trailer battery to keep from getting a ticket from the DOT . We have to do a prey trip inspection and if the brakes don’t apply when you pull that breakaway cable the fine cost a lot more than a battery and the up grade . You may not need to worry about this in your part of the country . Good videos 👍👍👍👍😎😎

Nice video. But it would be easier to just get some long jumper cable. Or two short ones soldered together. I'm cheap. That's the route I would go.

Ok i did connected my trailer as you shown but you did not specify about relay that you mentioned, because of that i think one of those wire is drawing more voltage still having similar issue
@shelbyvantol5583 жыл бұрын
So to be clear. If you run a 2/O wire from the battery to the bumper, I’m assuming without the circuit breaker that the hot wire would be a fire hazard on its own? Or would operate without any surge protection? I saw in another comment you mention you shut your breaker off when not using the trailer. An employee of mine tried this without the breaker and said his truck started smoking so he gave up don’t want that happening to my new truck. Thanks
@shelbyvantol5583 жыл бұрын
I guess I’m just trying to see if he got that result because the flow should be controlled with the breaker? Does the breaker pop on its own when the trailer is not pulling power?
@marcellemay77213 жыл бұрын
You need a circuit breaker to protect your vehicle in case there ever was a short circuit. If the insulation ever rubbed off onto a grounded portion of the truck, it would cause an electrical fire without the circuit breaker protection. It's just like a circuit breaker in your home. Without a circuit breaker, you're just asking for an electrical fire.
@gshsdemon200420063 жыл бұрын
Did everything as shown, with same items you linked in description. Don't know if the circuit breaker is Chinese garbage or not but as soon as i have a load on and try to dump it, it pops the breaker. Without a load works wonderfully... Any ideas?

So all I have to do is run a red wire from the hot to the back an just a short to frame to ground it? I am going do this.. thank you an your sound sounds great.
@marcellemay77215 жыл бұрын
Yes, but put some kind of shutoff or circuit breaker near the truck battery in case of a short. And always turn it off when you're not using it to power the trailer. Otherwise a short on that heavy wire will cause a truck fire🔥

@@marcellemay7721 thank you will do!! I will order that 250amp fuze cutoff u used.
@rogerl84885 жыл бұрын
I was on amazon they have a straight inline fuze cut off switch winder what amp would I need for that one wire? Its slim an straight instead square. Cause all I am looking for is to cut power from that battery back to the dump tralier. I am going use them grey plug together like u use on a winch...
@marcellemay77215 жыл бұрын
@@rogerl8488 I had a 250 amp breaker. I think they're made for solar panels charging arrays, they are cheap, like$15. For the dump body it was fine, but it would pop when using the 12,000 winch. So I installed a 300amp, and it's been fine. Installed right off the truck battery. I'm pretty sure there's a link in the description for those breaker s.

How did it work, how was your charging gauges when you are using the hydraulic dump or wninch
@marcellemay77214 жыл бұрын
It works great. There's 2 batteries on my diesel truck. I just keep the truck running when I'm winching and using the dump. The winch seems to draw more than the dump does.

Great video - why didn`t you use a powerbank for it? nowadays they do have so much power to fullfill dumping a few times so.... greetings from germany

Do you need 2/0, or 2 guage welding cable? I hear both from different videos. So I'm confused on this. There's a big difference on price, otherwise I'd just go with the bigger wire.
@marcellemay77213 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the confusion, it's the 2/0 size... The bigger of the sizes. 2 guage is kinda small for this application.

I'd be real careful about two things. First is if you use this anywhere they use salt on the roads. Salt water will set up a low grade short circuit between the two terminals on the truck and corrode the sockets. You might want to think about isolating the hot wire under the hood with a heavy relay and a switch in the cab. This can also run your truck battery down after a few days. The second is the capacity of the frame ground to the battery. Most batteries are grounded to the engine with much smaller ground straps from the engine to the body and frame. You might want to run a thicker ground cable from the frame to the battery or engine. We run into the same kinds of problems with snow plows up north and connections exposed to salt and weather are always eventualy a problem.
@marcellemay77214 жыл бұрын
I already have a 300 amp circuit breaker that's off always except for when I need the power to the trailer. But, your comment about the heavy ground to the frame is something I did not consider. I've been using it this way since I installed it, and it works. I understand the corrosion that can occur at the grounding point and also the mounting plate. The connectors are heavily isolated with a thick plastic grommet built in to the welding connectors I used, but voltage pathways can still occur if it's a wet salty environment. This is why I shut off the circuit breaker under the hood unless I actually need it to operate the trailer. The simple solution would be to just run a separate heavy ground cable from the battery to the connector on the back of the truck. I'll probably do that if I run into problems.

Why not just use electric forklift connectors and be done with it. They can take high amp draws and impossible to hook up backwards. Run heavy cables from your truck battery to the rear bumper and hook up one of the ends of the forklift connector to them. The other connector will hook to the trailer pump electrics.
@marcellemay77215 жыл бұрын
How much do a set of electric fork lift connectors cost ? I got less than $75 in this whole project.

SzymekCRX I plan on 3d printing some twist in dust covers to keep the dust and rain out. But, that's one of the reasons why I installed the circuit breaker under the hood so that I can keep it dead when I'm not using it. Thanks for watching.
@cameronyoung11675 жыл бұрын
Love the idea. Could u still have the battery in the trailer and use the new power as well from the truck? Then as u drive around the truck charges the trailer battery and u can not hook up the wire to the truck if not needed. If the battery was dead the the truck power would come in.
