The shot at 2:58 ALWAYS GIVES ME CHILLS. I fucking love this movie, such a simple concept, but literally runs with said concept and it turns out beautiful. One thing that always attracted me to it, was 2 things, 1: how dystopian it feels, once the runaway is out on the mainline, nothing but rocks, trees, and snow. 2: how dully painted the locomotives are, they look so worn and rusty, they aren't special, just regular workhorses, possibly due for the cutters torch, these two things add so much to the film for me. The music is a whole other awesome discussion

No way would his job title be 'Signal Maintainer' The title would be Infrastructure Operative or Estate Asset Manager or Field Environment Control Assurance Technician. And there wouldn't be as many as 40 either. For a railway that size there'd be five of them with two positions vacant for three years. And he's an old guy so they wouldn't replace him when he retires or gets made redundant because the asset strippers don't want to waste profits on any maintenance. Sorry, asset management.

As I recall the General Code of Operating Rules, either the "grade crossing" sequence (long, long, short, long) or a series of short blasts can be used as a general warning when you're not approaching a highway crossing. So this was 4 engines linked together right, no passengers, just a few conductors? While their lives aren't meaningless, if the trains really are runaway and can't be stopped, isn't it still better to derail them? Derailing them here your what, putting a half dozen lives or so at risk (from what we seen in this clip anyway). But if those runaways was to meet another train coming the opposite direction, or derail in a populated area, you could be putting hundreds at risk. I guess movie is gonna movie, you won't have much of a train movie without a speeding train. But realistically would there be any reason not to derail the train right here?

Signal maintainer 40 needs to retire. I'm sure he has reached his 60-30 requirement.

@Ian Hotson Thanks for your reply. I too worked for ATSF/BNSF for a little over 30 yrs. I was offered a buy out and took it. It was an offer I couldn't pass up. I enjoyed the work, but it was time.

Dude crackin' down on Mr. McDonnell like that, was totally uncalled for! Mr. McDonnell didn't know that there was anybody on that blasted Train! How could he have known? Young Dude needs to quit acting like a complete know-it-all! Then.....when his own system...the one that HE designed, fails him..... You can see it in his eyes. He looks humbled...and as deflated as a Baloon, that's got a slow leak. Hopefully, he learned not to be such a know-it-all, especially after all that.

Some companies still refer to it as a "whistle". Hance the "W" signs warning for grade crossings

It is referred to as a "whistle" in the General Code of Operating Rules and the Federal regs, therefore the term whistle is appropriate in general railroad nomenclature either as a noun referring to the equipped warning device or as a verb describing the action of providing advanced warning per a specific railroad rule or regulation.

My question is. Why is he refered to as "Signal maintainer 40"? At least here on the NECR, the guys in hirail trucks all use the EIC (engineer in charge) (guys initial and last name). for example NECR dispatch, EIC X Y Z looking to get track between Milepost 108 junction switch Burlington sub and 115.
