Thanks so much for the support DThought, appreciate you man. I'll continue to share what I know and hopefully impact some lives. It definitely feels different trying to race a marathon now than it did when I was 30. It wasn't uncommon back i 2007 to hit the first several miles of a marathon under 5 minute mile pace, now tough to do it for 1. That being said, it was great to be back out there with the runners and giving it a shot. Wishing you continued success and supreme health.

Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over again and that is why I succeed!” You are where you are today because of your constant pursuit of your goals, overcoming obstacle after obstacle. I am fairly new to the channel but I’ve been watching mostly all of your videos on sub 1:25 1:30 half and sub 3 full. Your channel has been a major blessing in my life and your pursuit of excellence within the sport of running gives you a tremendous amount of credibility that has made an impact on myself and many other runners alike who share this passion. Great job, Nate! Also, I will be running the 2025 nyc marathon chasing a sub 3 so I selfishly hope you change your mind and have that race as the last dance. Salute, brother. 🤝🏾

Hey coach. Sorry to hear about your tough day but I think all the comments agree it was an awesome effort and we all have benefited a lot because of you. I know I have. Thank you for being humble and posting about your experience during a difficult time. Don’t forget just 4 weeks ago you hit a 22miler at about 6:30 pace. Still an absolute beast that’s a serious pace for 22 and you know it.

On the next one 1️⃣ and all of the training doesn’t go to waste. Well done and thanks for all your help and advice for everything. Ran Philly half last year in a time of 68:40. This year was planning on running CIM till this Thursday when I tweaked something in my hamstring that made me pull out of this year's CIM and I have been very disappointed about it. In a shape to run 2:25 or faster but that will have to wait until next year. I was hope to celebrate this marathon as my 25 birthday.

Wishing you supreme health in your upcoming races and looking forward to hearing about your sub 2:25. I decided to give it one more shot and will be racing at the Rehoboth Beach Seashore Marathon on 7 December in Delaware. Nice job dropping that 68:40. I ran my half PR there too in 2007 (took 28th with a 67:07...always an insanely competitive race). That 68 proves you have a sub 2:20 in you soon. Thanks for your support.

I’ve all but given up on PRs at CIM. I’ll pace a teammate as long as I can to sub 3:00 and if I walk it in I’ll be ok with that!!

I also missed my goal of sub-17 at my race last week, I ended up running a 17:41 even though the weather was perfect and the course was very fast compared to any other race i've done. It was a small race and i ended up running by myself in the front, which definitely made it harder to hold on to my pace. I am now taking a break to let some small injuries/niggles heal for a couple weeks, but I'm not giving up on the 5k, and I will go for sub-17 again soon!
@rundreamachieve
@rundreamachieve Ай бұрын
No shame at all dropping a 17:41 5K, that is a highly competitive time and your sub 17 is definitely coming up soon. If you can run a 17:41 on an off day I have zero doubt you will be in the 16s very soon. Keep up the great work and thanks for the support.

I feel you, man. My marathon failure was bonking hard at mile 20 in Columbus back in the 2010s. I could feel the bonk coming on at mile 18, it was full on at mile 20, and by mile 22 the quads and hip flexors were pulsating pain with each stride. I never walked, but finished short of the goal, but re-loaded and learned to beat the bonk hitting several goals since then. I’m glad you pulled the plug early. Running yourself into an injury that would take 8 or more weeks to recover from would have been disastrous for the future. I’d like to see you re-visit this in a couple weeks to a month once you’ve thought about it for awhile….and let us know more about the lessons learned and the changes you’ll make going forward. Let’s see you slay this thing…..maybe even plan on doing Philly again next year returning to the scene of the crime.
@rundreamachieve
@rundreamachieve Ай бұрын
haha thanks for your support QMM, appreciate you. I ran Columbus back around 2005 and had a rough day there too (ran 2:55 I believe)..still very early in my career of trying to learn how to race marathons. Yeah, when your body shuts down in this event it REALLY does. I think I have only DNFd twice in my career..Grandmas Marathon once and this one. It's not a good feeling but like you said, there is a time where this has to be an option. Saw a few other elite Kenyans yesterday who had to too. Wishing you continued success in your training and racing and thanks for your support.

Coach : great job on your marathon big effort- please don’t get discouraged at all . I am 46yrs old now I recently ran Chicago at 2:48 my point is yes it’s definitely challenging for us at this age . In My case I ran 3 marathons sub3 before I ran sub250 so just take ur time eventually you’ll meet ur goal . Attempt to break sub3 first then go step by step it’s a process bc our body doesn’t function the same way like ppl who’re in their 20’s or 30’s - so don’t give up keep ur head up Love Hagos !

Hey Nathan, I'm sorry to hear man! But this can happen, especially in the marathon when you have not been marathoning for a while. I just achieved my goal in Valencia finishing in 2.58.14 age 50. True, it wasn't easy to get to this fitness level. I started about 6 years ago and did 5 of them in Rotterdam before Valencia: 4.09/3.49/3.39/3.25/3.05. But I enjoyed the process ever since and it kept me motivated to reach for more every year and learn from experienced guys like you. In Valencia I took you advice not to zip but really drink water serious 👍🏻👌🏻. It's great there because they give you a 500ml bottle every 5K instead of a cup with 100ml that you loose in the process of drinking while running. So grabbed 6 of them drinking 250ml out of each, plus 500ml of my own with electrolytes, totalling 2 liters. Keep up the good work!

In-race problems can affect anyone at any time at any race distance. The key thing is you're out doing it. Can't comment on the marathon as it's way beyond me but just keep running - even if it's simply being competitive with yourself. As a 10K guy now beyond my mid-60s, I didn't even get to the start line of my sub-55 min A-race PB attempt due to a calf tightness issue in the previous tune-up race - and I missed my target time by a minute earlier in the season - so, pretty frustrating but then you know all about that.

Ahh Nate! Was just about to email you to say good luck for this weekend at Valencia and this vid pops up…Sorry it didn’t pan out - but as you always say there are no guarantees in races (as in life also). As a competitive athlete that you are, it must be annoying that the training block had gone so well! But as you have stated numerous times in your vids the marathon doesn’t owe you anything and we have to take the rough with the smooth. The content and advise that you have provided throughout has been so invaluable and we were all hoping that you achieve your goal. Perhaps early 2025 we could do another interview post Philly, and also a look at how I got on with my sub 80min half (Jan 4th 2025) in London? Philadelphia sounds amazing. I so want to visit the city of Rocky! Congratulations on your efforts sir. I myself am 44 and about to run my first ever marathon for CIM. I'm shooting for a sub 4 hour goal. My questions this time around is before the 10 day taper, what's a good last big workout to do before? Then during the 10 day taper what should the longest run be? I'll have a few more questions leading into the Dec 8th CIM. You're still the best coach!
@rundreamachieve
@rundreamachieve Ай бұрын
Thanks for your support Aaron. I would do a 3 mile run@goal marathon race pace to 4 to 5 days out from CIM as your last workout, aside from that really should be easy relaxed jogging with some strides (i.e. 3-4x50 meters). Good luck going after that sub 4. CIM is the place to do it.

Hi Nate. I know you didn't hit your target, but you are not a failure. No way. You made a tough decision, but the right one and i think you have done an amazing job. I only started running in my 50's so I don't have the pressure of trying to match what my younger self could do.

That is so cool Corey! I was staying at the Holiday Inn Express on Penns Landing right before the 3 mile mark when we ran under that underpass and took the right hand turn. I was out there Saturday morning watching you guys run by too. Keep up the great work out training for your upcoming races. Thanks for your support too

Muscle tightness pops up from nowhere and is hard to resolve. Got leg muscles tightness the past two weeks. I realized that was never a problem when I regularly applied Epson salt. I rubbed by legs with Epson salt yesterday and magically the tightness went away! I am sure you will be back this spring for another goal race.

SO true. Yeah muscle tightness and breakdown REALLY will shut you down quick physiologically. Your mind may still be in it but the anatomy-wise the best thing one can do is call it a day and don't do further damage. Thanks for your support Zia.

I ran Philly yesterday and also bailed right at mile 16 (first DNF in my life). Same issue -- muscle tightness in my hips and quads. The course really exposed my lack of hill training and strength work. Disappointing, but it is what it is. Need to adjust and move forward.

I might have seen you walking ahead of me..were you wearing a black singlet with black arm warmers? Saw a guy walking in front of me probably 200 to 300 meters ahead of me or so. Hang in there, that course was far more challenging than I thought it was going to be..those downhills sections after we got out of the park REALLY screwed up my hamstring. Those were some sharp inclines for sure. Success to you moving forward into 2025.

@@rundreamachieve Wasn't me -- I was wearing a green singlet. The course was definitely a challenge. Didn't think the hills would be as much of a factor as they were. I held really high and consistent mileage going into the race too. Just didn't focus on hills or strength much, but I guess that just shows how the marathon exposes any weaknesses in training. Thanks for the words of encouragement! I hope you recover well and consider giving it another go

I totally hear ya there man...yeah some of those hill were sharper inclines than anything I experience at CIM. Rest and heal up. I'm certain based on your high level of dedication you will get the performance you are looking for in 2025.

Been following your videos for awhile to train for my first marathon at Philly myself!! So cool that you were there!!!! Very challenging and I also had tightness early in the race that made me adjust expectations on the fly. Shot for 3:30, half splits were 1:47/2:09 and it HURT. Congratulations on putting the training together to make your goal possible. I’m inspired!

Outstanding job in the race Garret, to be running that fast at 55 is truly inspiring. I have the utmost respect for runners in their 20s-30s racing this distance but to train hard in your 40s-50s-60s as many out there are such as yourself takes a different level of mindset and thinking. You REALLY have to want it to keep doing it at our age for sure.

I had the same problem with hip flexors but mine was at mile 21 and so I held on. Slowed down from 6:45 to 7:30 & 8:30s miles at that point till the end. Let me know how to fix this one for the next one.

Great job hanging on Wayne. I think more than likely it is strength and conditioning issue so strengthen those areas of your body a bit more in your next build up. You already know the marathon is different. I would also pick a FLAT course as Philly clearly is not as much as they say it is..sure, there are some flat areas of the course but those sharp hills and downhills are no joke. Perhaps a marathon at chicago, berlin or rotterdam would be a better pick for you.

I think the best thing we can do as athletes is not dwell on what went wrong in past races because we can't go back. The best runners I have ever trained with which include Olympians is they get over disappointment QUICKLY. They're already thinking about the next race hours after a poor performance. So, use your 20:36 (which is a legit time and effort by the way) as fuel to drive you to that performance you are seeking. Don't go out too aggressive in the first mile to assist with your breathing. The faster we are running the more oxygen is required so you don't want to go into oxygen debt too early in the race. The 5K is highly anaerobic so it is VERY easy to go out far too fast in a race of that duration. Wait until you pass the first mile and THEN make it a 2.1 mile all out effort. Hope this helps.

Great to hear a recap however disappointing it would feel fir you but knowing you put in so much work to have your physiology capable of such a fast time in your late 40s. Even how well many of the wrkouts went in the last 2mths id say you still have a tremendous Aerobic system (and Anaerobic of course) build & "reawakened" now as they say. If I was you id heal up the injuries & tightness just jogging for a few wks given you didnt get to dump all your Aerobic enzymes on this 26.2mile peak performance post taper etc. Itll only be a hard longrun stimulus which means as you know if you just jogged /easy run 8-8 1/2min miles the next 3wks @ 60mile wks for healthy stimulus...it could be very special to then "unofficially" run at 6:50 pace and drop a fun healthier sneaky sub3 for some free mental boost and contentment with no or low pain only given its only inflammation/acidosis currently...not true injuries. Youre much fitter based on recent wrkouts to leave that distance. The 22-23mile training run a few wks ago may have aggrevated some tendinitis & tightened hammies & hip flexers. I know hard longruns or hill repeats or 400m intervals do for me even at almost 42yrs age now. Could be nice to just jog to restore healing enzymes around 8 1/4min miles and I totally visualise you enjoying a low pain 26.2mile marathon training run in 3wks time as the legs will have alot of reduced tension. When I jogged lots of easy doubles all my hamstring stiffness & extremely tight hip flexers backed off and was able to run then pain free a few wks later. 😊🎉. All the best legend, perhaps something nice to consider. Cheers from aus.

this is great feedback and really appreciate it Zac. I will keep your input in mind for sure...good thing is only went 16.4 miles so didn't totally beat myself up too bad had I been able to race 26.2 miles on that particular day. Guess there are some positives from this effort. Thanks again for your support.

@@rundreamachieveyour welcome legend. I appreciate that you appreciate it. After all, thats the beauty of global running hey. We all understand the highs and lows and running is a beautiful thing...especially easy days with favourite tunes & activating/experiencing alphawaves around 65% max heartrate as Dr Phil Maffetone speaks of in podcasts etc. All the best. I see your tendonitis leaving with easy jogs. Arthur Lydiard used to clear tendonitis & acidosis injuries/niggles with very easy jogging runs from 45min to 3hrs until cleared. Cheers
