Runescape 3 is usually considered the lesser of the two Runescape versions. Is it really as bad as people say it is though?

RuneScape, sometimes referred to as RuneScape 3, is a fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Jagex, first released in January 2001. RuneScape was originally a browser game built with the Java programming language, but was largely replaced by a standalone C++-coded client in 2016. The game has had over 200 million accounts created and is recognized by the Guinness World Records as the world's largest and most-updated free MMORPG.
RuneScape takes place in the world of Gielinor, a medieval fantasy realm divided into different kingdoms, regions, and cities. Players can travel throughout Gielinor via a number of methods including on foot, magical spells, or charter ships. Each region offers different types of monsters, resources, and quests to challenge players. The game's fictional universe has also been explored through a tie-in video game on another of its maker's websites, FunOrb, Armies of Gielinor, and the novels Betrayal at Falador, Return to Canifis, and Legacy of Blood.

@@VagrantVideos Protox made a similar vid whiles ago where I told him I played both games OS and 3, but only for the questing - you definitely hit the nail on the head with that statement. Runescape 3 has some of the best questing available. And am definitely looking forward into OS' take on The Lord of Vampyirium coming to OS soon in the form of Sins of The Father. Definitely will be interesting to see what they tweaked from a lore concept. Like will they go in depth explaining Safalaan and Vanstrom's relationship to Iceyene. I dunno, but the changes to Song of The Elves made more sense to than RS3's Plague's End. I lowkey felt out of place killing Ardy Knights and Paladins defending an unruly king bent on opening the metaphorical pits of hell on its' citizenry. Whereas OS revamped it and coded it to where the Ardy Knights and Paladins defend the citizenry against the monarchy rather than subjugating them, because they were ordered to do an unspeakable act. It's those fine changes I can appreciate in OSRS Questing they go back look at what did well and shove it into OS - so long as the community is like, "NAYYY Saaayyy" we want to keep this OS not RS2.5 SMH.... Questing in RS3 though I Love because it pushes the story further - progressing the ages and opening up new lore opportunities to explore. I didn't care too much about the combat though. It just feels so laggy to do a Solo Ambassador run compared to doing a Solo Theatre of Blood. More clicking required to perform one action. With easy clicking errors pulling you into some sort of janky area where you didn't intend to go. Where as I can tick perfect a sq to avoid a one shot while continuously putting out DPS with a scythe.

The thing that sets RS3 apart from other action bar based mmos is that you can enable Revolution Mode, which cycles through the abilities without having to press them, effectively rendering the combat about as afk as osrs. Manual control will definitely give you way better damage if you want to do bosses or something, but even then you can just set your ability bar up nicely so that you can use revo on lower level bosses too. I don't think it was touched on in this video, actually.

(Leaving my 2 cents before starting the video) RS3 has its problems, but in no way does it justify the hate it receives. I came back to RuneScape in 2017 after over a decade away, so I missed the rough years of EOC and some other things, but the current state of the game is great, all things considered. I enjoy combat (especially bossing) way more than I did in the early years of my RuneScape journey, mtx is trash but you don’t have to participate and can even make an Ironman/hardcore Ironman, the amount of content the game has to offer is insane (in a good way), and in my experience, because the game has such a bad rep, the player base is very open to new/returning players. My wife even enjoys it and she’s not what you would call a “gamer”. So yea, it bothers me a little that the game is so looked down upon, but most of the hate is from people that haven’t given it a fair shot since OS was introduced, or have never played it at all.

I think it's going to have a resurgence since it's released on mobile. It's one of the few fully built MMORPGs that has crossplay with PC, Android & iOS. I downloaded it on a high-end Samsung/ Android tablet & it looks & runs amazing. I was too young to play OSRS seriously so the graphics of OSRS aren't nostalgic to me - they're just awful. I think a lot of people in my boat would like RS3 though, bc we played WoW as kids & this is a bit like a simplified WoW & fulfills the dream of playing WoW type game on mobile cross-platform

I still like it a lot, but it's definitely not as newb friendly. The settings in particular could use an overhaul. There are downsides to, every time a change is made to some function of the game, like interfaces, the solution becomes "make that a toggle!" there's thousands now. Archeology is fun, Elite Dungeons are fun, and I'm glad I picked it back up, but I'm still hopping to OSRS for the Sins of the Father quest in June! Both these sharing a subscription cost has its perks.

I would say it was definitely more newb friendly for people who play lots of MMORPG’s, given that it gives several clear paths as to what to do as a newbie player, while OSRS kind of just throws you into it after a vague tutorial.

It's so hard to find people making honest videos on RS3 where they don't just needlessly flame on it for no reason. Thank you so much for actually giving a decent review of the game, and one that for once is actually correct. A lot of the time I really want to come down into people's videos with timestamps and explain things to them that they simply got completely wrong but since you actually played in the transitional era between RS and OSRS you actually understood the difference between them and it's just so refreshing to see (Usually people seem to think OSRS is the original and RS3 was released later as a spinoff, which is sort of the reverse of what actually happened).

I've been playing since 2003, got my completionist cape in 2012, stopped playing RS3 in 2016 and switched to Oldschool. Almost maxed on Oldschool but I've recently jumped back to RS3 to see how it's going and it's actually quite a lot of fun. I love how extensive the drop tables are, including how the rare drop mechanics work. Clues are also amazing money, and the 120 Slayer grind is keeping me interested. I'm definitely against silly cosmetics and the 'pay to win' aspect of the game, but the core game is great now (especially combat). For people who are in a similar situation to me, I'd definitely give RS3 another go. It was a bit overwhelming but you get used to it after a while.

It's nice seeing more people review the modern Runescape; fantastic video btw! In its current state I definitely would say RS3 is not the most new player friendly, but if you can get past the often confusing earlygame and adjusting to how the game works, it really is fun playing. I've maxed 2 accounts: a normal account (which had completionist cape at one point) and an ironman, which is the only account I play on currently. Definitely recommend playing RS3 without any restrictions first, then consider making an ironman account - ironman mode is so satisfying with gear progression and building on the knowledge you gathered while playing on a normal account.

Such a great review, I feel like rs3 is the more accessible version of runescape for people that didn't play either of the games. It is less grindy than osrs( even when it's still grindy for a game ). The current combat system is a lot more modern than the older one and it has better graphics. If rs3 took care of the few big problems it has, it could grow into a great alternative to osrs that more people would likely play. Don't get me wrong, it is still a great game but it could do ever better.

I couldn't agree more I play both games and I can see that RS3 is future-ready and osrs is not. That's mainly cus of the combat system and the new skill, they can just keep adding original new content. On osrs they will of course add new bosses or so but they will never be able to make a brand new separate skill like invention or archeology. RS3 has its flaws but within a few years the player base will rise and how sad it is the player base of osrs will decrease :( just because when you are maxed in OSRS you are done while in RS3 you are just getting started :)

To me, it comes down to whether or not you enjoy PvP. If you like pvp in runescape, then go for OSRS; it's far more suited to it, without question. But if you don't really care for PvP that much, then I genuinely recommend RS3 instead. This becomes especially relevant for high level accounts. New content is *RARE* in OSRS, so if you've maxed out everything, then there's very little to actually do anymore beyond PvP. RS3, on the other hand, gets content updates more regularly than OSRS, so it's significantly harder to "run out" of stuff to do.

I've been an on again off again RuneScape player since 04, and was there for the transition to EoC. I never really got the desire to keep things as they were with OSRS, but back then I wasn't really a hardcore player, I liked the quests and the exploration, but my only cape was a quest cape, I wasn't a PvPer or "good" by any means at any aspect of the game. Flash forward to the present and after many bursts of play followed by years of downtime I can say that I adore Runescape in its current form. To me "runescape" is RS3, not OSRS, I know that's the minority opinion but I really don't play with others and outside of a few friends it's been this game that's mostly grown up alongside me. I do think I only can love the game as it is now, because of the time I invested as a teenager. That's not to say I think it's terrible, and someone who is dedicated could easily grind up to the point of making the game very fun, and seeing people tackle quests and things of that nature brand new fresh accounts can have a wonderful time, but there is such a time investment required to get to certain key elements of the game. I'll just add to what you said about it being some of the best questing second to the original Secret World, which I also played the hell out of and was there til the moment it shut down. I'd argue that Runescape, at its best, has the best questing in an MMO, and hits on some incredibly real world, heavy issues in a way that doesn't feel ham fisted or insulting. The music in the post EoC age has gone from charming chiptunes to genuinely fantastic atmosphere pieces and at times deeply emotional music that has stuck with me for the better part of 8 years. One track in particular still evokes a lot of emotion for me, and I'm sure for people who let themselves get passed the character models and invested in the story it hits for them too. The other thing I want to add is that while the community has been constantly complaining of a lack of content, having just returned after a two year break I am very pleased with the *quality* of the updates. Sprawling deep dungeons with multiple involved bosses, new non-combat skilling content that's rewarding both in game and for having to learn and master it, I think RS is on a good path it just needs its own community to not hold it down with expectations and resentment. That's from both the player and developer side. I truly sympathize with some of the devs and the stress they've put themselves under, and believe at the end of the day they want the same thing we players want, a healthy memorable game that brings joy and its own kind of art into the world. Thanks for making the video, any peaceful conversation about a game that's been so thoroughly trounced and looked over unfairly is welcome in my eyes.

@@VagrantVideos I have a mixed feeling on mtx. I know I'm about to get flayed for this but, I don't terribly mind their existence. We've moved into a different era, and the games' numbers aren't what they should or could be. I think we can all agree that the treasure hunter promotions got really, erally out of hand especially a few years back. It was handled so appallingly and honestly kind of gives me Warframe vibes. I don't know if you are familiar, but Warframe has a horrendous first impression, you get in and have basically nothing and just see what appears to be the most scummy, cash grabby, paywall of a game in its UI design. Then you play and realize the only reason to ever spend money on the game is to support the development of it. MTX I don't mind existing that way for RS, Bonds are a great addition that only help the community, cosmetics as long as they don't exclusively overshadow earnables are fine. One thing I think was smart and is often overlooked is that Bonds aren't just membership, they can be redeemed for virtually everything that can be purchased with real world money, so even mtx locked cosmetics are earnable in game. I think image is a huge issue with how they handle their sales and marketing department, and it feels terrible and scummy from someone who really doesn't want to see it. I know there's the argument about buyable xp or account progress, but I've always been kind of, unconcerned with it. Well, that's not true when they ran supremely ridiculous cash grab after cash grab to get people buying that was bad, but the existence of some kind of leg up doesn't bother me for two reasons. First is that ultimately this is a very, subjective and personal MMO. A sense of accomplishment comes from within or from within a community. I could not give less of a concern about what someone else's stats are or how they got it unless it's friendly competition with a friend. If MTX of that nature is unobtrusive and serves as a way for the devs to keep their jobs and work on the game, I don't mind it. Second and feeding into that point, something often not mentioned in regards to MTX is there's a blanket blacklist on using it for new content. Archaeology, the new skill, for example, can't make use of even things like the occasional double xp weekends until an equal standing grace period ends. The races to 99, 120, max xp, major discoveries, global firsts. Everything in the release hype window is completely and totally preserved, and I think that's an incredibly reasonable way for them to handle it. Would I like to see fewer promotions, things more subtly cast to the side? Of course, but honestly coming back from the 2017 era where every day there was some gross popup and it couldn't be dismissed, they've taken steps in the right direction and I think they should be acknowledged for that. It's gonna be a slow burn, we have to remember that these are people who have families and bills, and the whole company is owned by investors who presumably care only for their profit margin. If we can help the community grow, and keep trying, despite how impossible it feels at times, to have a conversation with Jagex about what we find acceptable, maybe we can get things to a great spot. Tl;dr, I agree with you, but I hope we can as a community not bite their heads off for small progress. It's never going to be a flip the switch and things are as they should be, but that doesn't mean the incremental progress isn't worth noting.

Tbh, Treasure Hunter isn't all that p2w as people think. I got 650 keys not too long ago, and it didn't make a substantial difference. I think the most beneficial things I received were springs, bonus xp, lamps, and proteans. Does this equal faster levels...yes. But not as fast as people would think. I put most of the experience in skills that are too slow for me to train normally, such as agility and mining. The most p2w aspect of the game is definitely buying bonds, but I feel like this was the only way Jagex could combat real-life trading. Regardless of whether people buy keys/bonds, RuneScape is still a very grindy game at the later levels of most skills. So unless someone has thousands of dollars to throw away, you are better off saving your money and maxing your character normally.

Strength is almost meaningless as most damage boost is from weapon bonuses. This is especially apparent if you play on legacy combat mode, since you can't use the strength skill locked abilities. Someone with just the attack requirement for a noxious scythe will out damage someone with 99 attack and strength, using any lower tier weapon. Strength just locks abilities behind levels but its contributions are next to none.

i would say that at 99 strength you have potential for about double the damage at 1 strength, however the combat system itself is the more important aspect of damage, for instance using decimate/cleave to cycle your 5 strongest basics instead of running the weaker ones. if youre just running revo it might be a bit more evened out just because of the lack of control you have using it. edit: not saying you are or anything but just in general.

RuneScape is also a great social outlet with how nice and put together clans are now a days. On my main I spend all day doing elite dungeons and other pvm with friends across the world and get to enjoy EOC as a better and more complex combat system that makes me feel like I've actually thought about the combat more than "prayer flick to win". On my hardcore I get to plan out an entire journey through the skills and gear tiers to make my way through quests and eventually max. I have been playing runescape for a very long time. Started back in 2006. I was in 6th grade and my friends introduced RS to me. I ended up getting hooked to it right away. It was my first real computer game and first online game. I am personally disappointed in what Rs3 has evolved into. Its a sham of what it used to be, and it sucks seeing the game i loved so much turn into a cash cow. The way the Rs3 & Osrs team treat their games are so different. Osrs team feels like they really care about their game. Whereas the Rs3 team just feels like they are trying to make money. And the squeal of fortune (or whatever its called now) is completely P2W nonsense. Out of the two, i would recommend Osrs 100%. I know the graphics can turn people off, if you didn't play back in the day and have the nostalgia for it. But i think Osrs is a much more enjoyable game and less daunting than Rs3 As i am making this post there are 100k players online on runescape. 14k are playing Rs3 & 76k are playing Osrs. Rs3 is not worth the time, but that's just my opinion.

Why? well it's simple it would get rid of the luring community who are scum and trick players for there entire banks it would discourage scumbags who farm people at agility course who don't know any better I just think at this point the PVP would be to hard to balance without ruining the PVE and PVM player base alike nobody wants to lose millions just because there something they need to do in the wilderness it just dumb

Those numbers don't sound bad. Gold selling sites put the exchange rate at around 1 OSRS gold for ~6 RS3 gold. The most expensive weapon in OSRS costs 1.1b or 6.8b in RS3. Maxing construction costs ~250m or 1.5b.

@@VagrantVideos It can't really. RuneScape 3 is an era in time, just like RuneScape 2. RuneScape has always been an ever changing game with the motto being updates every week. You're expected to have changes. RS2/RS3 is just to mark the time period. Not when speaking about an actual thing. (over-exaggeration) The Jmods who say RS3 need to be fired, or fined. :D. But at least you made a little bit of effort & changed title. :)

Honestly I am more tolerant to the microtransactions in RS3 than most other games. Why? Well there is a bit of history behind it, but people have always been using illegitimate ways to get ahead in Runescape since the beginning through botting and real world trading. Now I am not endorsing the Play to Win model that Jagex put in the game, but even if we got rid of it, people WILL find ways to "Pay to Win" even if it isn't considered legal. I would rather see people who want to "Pay to win" pay the game company itself than do botting or real world trading. Those two last ones are the reason Jagex got rid of the wilderness in the first place, "killing the game." It's sad really, but the alternative is still bad and only hurts Jagex. At least there is Ironman mode to let you completely abstain from treasure hunter. Plus the people that pay ridiculous amounts for bons just to buy gold with them allows dedicated fans to actually get membership simply by making money in the game.

So unless you want to waiste 1000$ just to get SOME of the products, save your life fyi (it takes 250+ hours for 1 skill OUT of 28) and you STILL have to pay to use the fucking skill after you waiste your time doing it. As an avid osrs player, I've never had any hate towards RS3.....well, okay, i can't say that. The proportions of the female player characters are AWFUL!! Aside from that, I've never had an issue with the game. Even it's microtransactions don't bother me. Why? Because they don't really benefit the game for anyone. Most of the things you can get are optional cosmetics. Sure, you can buy things that can give you xp, but the amount of time it takes you to get the item and use it....you could of just gotten the same amount of xp from grinding it. That, and I only play Ironman so microtransactions wouldn't affect me anyway. Also, the combat may be very WoW like, but if you don't like it, just switch to legacy mode. I feel like many people forget that that's a thing when they complain about it. Personally, I just used revolution back when I played RS3. Kind of the best of both worlds. Also, having healing abilities.....I honestly wish osrs had that in someway. There's like, what, 3 combat healing methods in osrs? And all of them are difficult to obtain. It's so useful cause I don't have to bring a full invent of food everytime i do a slayer assignment (unless im safespotting that is), but it is a bit easy to obtain right from the start. I'd put requirements behind it. And then there's the quests...Imma be honest, I have wanted to go back to RS3 just to do the quests alone. The quests are so much more interesting and engaging in the modern game. Im just a straight up space bar warrior on quests in old school, but everytime I've done a quest in RS3, I've genuinely enjoyed it and I cared about the lore. So you may be wondering why I play old school after praising RS3 as much as I did...well, it's because the thing that changed the most in the game was the thing that I loved the most about it. The leveling and the method's behind it. For much of RS3, you can just bank stand almost every skill. Each level in old school feels so rewarding...but RS3...I couldn't care less about my levels. Getting 99's got so easy to the point where they had to make lvl 120 capes. Now, do I hate that skilling became this way in the game? No, because I understand why. RS3 became a game that centered around Story, Lore, Adventuring, Questing, Minigames, Tasking and Bossing...not Leveling and Grinding. And that's not a bad thing, it just isn't what I personally wanted from the game. Anyway, those are just my thoughts on the matter. I do wish more osrs players shared my opinion, because there are a large majority of us who hate the game just to hate it. I do hope RS3 keeps growing and for FUK SAKE, FIX THE FEMALE PLAYER PROPORTIONS!!

@BChuckVT

@@Sasoripwns graphicly and texture wise RS3 is evidently better, but in terms of proportions....I mean just look at the length of the females player characters arms compared to their legs. Their legs are so short and their arms are way too freakin long. And on top of that, the hands are MASSIVE!! Then there's the overly broad shoulders that are way too far apart, and dont even get me started on their running animation...I mean, not like the male characters are all that great either, but their a lot better than the female's disjointed and spaztic bouncing running. OSRS might be worse in terms of detail and texture, but atleast the proportions are far more accurate.
