#runningtechnique #heelstriking
It seems like the first thing that runners look at when thinking about technique is footstrike, in particular trying to avoid at all cost heel striking. Let's dive into what science has to say about it and how to correct it! Or perhaps we shouldn't correct it?
Please feel free to comment if you have questions. Really hope this can help some of you!

I guess I have the mid footstrike. I believe everyone has a different running style and as you said it is difficult and risky for injuries to change it. I suggest always to wear the right shoe for different trainings, that's the best way, I totally agree, nice video my friend!

Awesome Stephane! Makes perfect sense, and I had been experimenting with different shoes for running after I saw a video by Lucy Charles Barclay ( a heavily Asics influenced video) suggesting different shoes. Now I understand why my wife is so obsessed with new shoes - she was just strengthening her feet!

All solid advice here Stephane! The only thing I'd like to add is that less time on the ground means faster pace and mid to forefoot strike usually means less time with ground contact. Great point about varying your shoes! Keep pushing!

Hey Paul! Thanks for your great input! I agree with you, although the recent data (10 November 2021 Bovalino and Kingsley) demonstrates to me inconsistencies on prior analysis re foot strike: inconclusive evidence that rear foot striking is slower, even in elite distance runners. Perhaps it is better to focus on proper patterns that reduce injuries and other factors such as stride length and what the foot does, while it's on the floor. Again, thanks for starting the conversation, this is really fascinating stuff for me! Let me know your thoughts and experience!

@@SafeMotions I'm in agreement Stephane! Judging by my own experience a good forward lean without bending at the waist, will naturally get you on your mid to forefoot.... And that's when I move quickly with less effort. Keep the conversation rolling!

@@DevRunner Yes, for sure. Proper posture, focus forward lean from the ankles and don't worry too much about foot strike. It will position itself well as long as below the hip. Thanks Paul!!

Great advice, Stephane 👍🏻 I was rotating through my shoes a lot until we moved house. Now I can only find one pair 😂 You have a typo in the title btw, Footsrike missing the t.

Mind blowing stuff Steph. I wish I had watched this video before I made my foot strike video, lol. I came to a different conclusion and modified my running form a while ago to a mid-foot strike. Of course in trail running we use all of the foot so I guess it all works out.

Great info Stephane. I train mainly in Hoka and Nike with 6mm drop but race long distances in zero drop Altra. I agree with your idea of changing up the shoes in the rotation. Thanks for sharing.

Great video!! I agree with you on the foot strike. That research is finding that it doesn’t matter where you land do what’s natural. Thank you for sharing!!

I think it might be useful to use a power meter to find out where you generate the most W/kg at the same pace and bpm, assuming you have technique mostly locked down for all three and use appropriate footwear for them. Then assess any soreness that could lead towards repetitive injuries. My guess is that, for the vast majority of people, it will be mid-foot, but forefoot strike has the best potential for power output at the same energy cost. But I dunno. This was just from my imperfect experiment of one.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts! And science... It's a tough one, many elite runners heel strike. Are they elite despite the heel strike or thanks to the heel strike? There is plenty of research looking into foot strike and actual injuries, but with so many different types of bodies and techniques and footwear, it's simply best to learn by experience and accept individual variability. We all have different body mechanics.

@@SafeMotions I call it Dr. Jekyll science because it's based on a test population of one and a control population of last year. Legitimate sports science papers are good sources of general knowledge of human performance but, like you said, everybody is different. Also, running is as much an art as our species' form of locomotion. At the other end of the spectrum you have the shaman types who fall for the genetic fallacy of everything "natural". What exactly is that? Did homo sapiens really run exactly the same everywhere? We developed different fighting styles everywhere. We developed different sitting and standing habits. There is art involved here too. I think this topic is so much deeper than most people realize.

Pretty interesting take on foot-strike. I still have a long way to go to obtain the “perfect” running form for myself. I’m beyond guilty on not spending enough time on strength training and recovery. Overall, nothing but great information and advice from you as always. Sorry man, I got a lot of catching up to do with some of your previous videos.
