Don't be obsessed with lengthening your hamstrings or loosening them by stretching. Not only is static stretching of the hamstring a waste of time, but it can also in the process stretch your sciatic nerve if you're not careful. Tight does not necessarily mean bad, what we need for running is that elasticity of the muscle, dynamically. Not static like in most stretches you see suggested.
Hope this video sheds some light on how you can make your hamstrings work for you to become a better runner, loosen tight hamstring without stretching them and use some massage techniques with reciprocal inhibition instead!
