More important are range tests coupled with ease of finding charge stations. You don't run out of gas in an ICE vehicle so you have the pleasure of calling roadside. I took it on a road trip up to Oregon this month and was paranoid that I would run out a charge, even though I mapped out the trip. Still when the battery once got as low as 17%, i became EXTREMELY anxious. Heck I was just as anxious watching this video! I think if I had watched this before going on my trip, I would have felt a little more comfortable. @Mladjasmilic2 жыл бұрын
Unless you drive a Diesel. It you go down to 1/4, it can suck up all the gunk in the tank, clog up the pump, injectors and then you loose all the power. A good luck trying to start a Diesel that has run out of fuel.

As for EV power. When battery is full, it is about 420V. When empty, it is 300V. If max power is 420kW, that 1000A at 420V. But you can not draw more Amps at lower Voltage to compensate. So at 300V 1000A, it is about 300kW. So car has less power.

As an electric vehicle owner (2016 Kia Soul EV+) I can say that running out of battery is kind of embarrassing because EVs give you TONS of warnings before you are at a point where you literally have to be towed. But, it CAN happen in special circumstances. Luckily it only has happened to me once, when I didn't charge up sufficiently at a DC Fast charger though I seemed to have enough to get to my next destination. I failed to take into account that if you're driving on the highway your efficiency is going to suffer and I ran out of juice about 1 mile from the charger. Pretty embarrassing to have to be towed only 1 mile. That being said, there are some things you can do to help your situation if you get low on battery. First, if you are on the highway you should immediately reduce speed to whatever the minimum required speed is on the highway (usually 50 mph) and stay to the right with your hazards on. Turn off the heater or AC as long as you can stand it. Use heated or cooled seats if possible. I also recommend bringing a portable EVSE that plug into various receptacles such as NEMA 14-50, etc because you never know what situation you might find yourself in. At the very least bring the included 120V EVSE with you because in a pinch you can probably plug in somewhere for an hour or so to gain enough range to get to another charger. But in general, your battery likes to stay between 40% and about 80%. Try not to let it get too low for too long, nor at a high state of charge for an extended period.

He ran it out on purpose, ignoring multiple warnings and not going to any of the suggested charging spots. You can do the same with any gasoline car. I have run out of gas many times ;->. Admittedly, solving the out of energy 'stuck' issue with a jerry can is easier and cheaper than a tow to a charger. The F-150 Lightning has the ability to provide battery empty EV's with a booster charge to reach a charger. Some 'tow vehicles' are equipped to do this also. Gas cars break down many multiples of times more than EV's do, however, so those costly tows, along with their added repair costs are still more likely when driving via gasoline in that REAL car. And those REAL cars with their noxious emissions are having much more of a negative effect on our quality of life today and our children's future. EV's are just simpler with fewer moving parts and no transmissions, carburetors, big radiators, exhaust systems, oil changes, smog checks (where I live) and on and on. And even though they tend run heavier than similar gasoline models due to their batteries, they need less brake work due to their regenerative braking carrying much of the stopping load while their batteries get a boost. Unless you are a grandma driver like me you may have to replace their tires more often though.

Hopefully the Aptera will soon come out with their 600 and 1,000 mile range EV's. Do you really own a Tesla? Your charging station complaints are somewhat true for the sad networks of chargers for non Tesla vehicles, but not for the Tesla super charging network. Thankfully the non Tesla rapid chargers are becoming more numerous and reliable lately and going forward, and the nifty Tesla network will gradually be opened and adapted to serve other EVs. I drive a LEAF, but will, god willing and the creeks don't rise, switch to an Aptera hopefully toward the end of 2023. Tesla chargers don't charge by the minute, but by the kilowatts downloaded. Only when you leave a "fully charged" car plugged into one of their chargers for over 10 minutes, last I heard, do they start charging you by the minute, if that super charger station is a busy one. And most Tesla owners are not charging their cars up to 100% anyway on their road trips. They mostly charge at home, as I do, day to day. I do opportunity charge at free level 2 chargers around Reno here and there. The Tesla Super chargers I bump into are always 6 to 20+ stations and I have never seen one full. The other networks? One, or two stations if you are lucky to plug into per location. Still, in my 9 years of EV driving I have very rarely had to wait to charge. Granted I only do 3 or 4 road trips a year, fewer now as my aging battery has lost capacity (and a little over 100 miles was the most it ever got). The Aptera, even the 400 mile model, with its long range and battery thermal management will free me to travel more. The 2013 LEAF was not engineered to be much more than a city/regional travel car. The battery overheats too easily when stringing together multiple DC fast charges. Even their maintenance doc's only recommend one of those in a 24 hour period.

Tree hugging is not this country’s best choice. I have the 3.0 Duramax getting phenomenal mileage. That seems the way to go for me. I’m not against EVs. I think there’s a niche. @kannermw2 жыл бұрын
@@charlesball6519 It is individuals like you who make blatantly false statements about the grid being able to handle the added load of EVs without having the facts to support it. This along with false belief this will save the planet. Sources cited below. Light duty vehicles constitute 56% of total transportation sector US energy consumption. Transportation sector is 35% of total. Thus .56 x .35 = ~ 19.6% x 69.7 quadrillion BTU = 13.7 quadrillion BTU. Total U.S. energy consumption is 92.9 quadT BTU and thus light duty vehicles represent only 14.7% of energy consumption. Assuming hybrid cars are twice as efficient as conventional 13.7 / 2 = 6.8 quadT BTU consumption and potential savings (existing tech no infrastructure investment reqd.) Assuming electric cars are twice as efficient as compared to hybrid 6.8/2 = 3.4 quadT consumption and potential savings. (trillions $$$ in investment reqd) Electric grid output of 12.5 quadT BTU this is 27% increase in grid load for electric and will create issues. Then consider Electric grid efficiency is only 35% thus 3.4/.35 = 9.7 quadrillion BTU vs hybrid 6.8. Going EV we consume 2.9 quad T BTU more energy vs hybrid alternative and spend trillions in infrastructure investment for an negative return. Bottom line EVs are the investment of moronic thinking that will surely sink future generations. www.eia.gov/energyexplained/us-energy-facts/#:~:text=Download%20image%20U.S.%20primary%20energy,natural%20gas%2034%25%20petroleum%2035%25 www.eia.gov/energyexplained/use-of-energy/transportation-in-depth.php

This assumes that the grid remains static and no additional capacity or updating will occur at any time in the future. There would also be a measured decrease in industrial power usage for hydrocarbon refinement. It takes 8kWh to produce one gallon of gasoline. There are 135 billion gallons of gasoline produced per year. This would be a reduction of 3.685 Quadrillion BTU in energy usage (3412.14 BTUs per kWh). It appears here, that considering you say EVs would increase the grid usage by 2.9 Quadrillion BTUs, there would be an actual decrease in usage by 785 trillion BTUs (about 21% decrease), with gasoline no longer being produced. Now, assuming you are referring to the BTUs of gasoline, 1 gallon of gas has 120,286 BTUs. This in itself would be a reduction of 16.238 Quadrillion BTUs. The whole transition to electrification of transportation does not happen all at once. It'll take several decades to do, and over those decades, the grid will be upgraded (just as in Amarillo, TX, the power company updated a switch yard for the increased load in that area) You also forgot to do 6.8/.35 for Hybrids, which would equal 19.43 Qadrillion BTU's, so that means EVs would be using less energy than hybrids: By your numbers Entire non-EV transportation industry = 13.7 Quadrillion BTUs Hybrids only = 19.43 Quadrillion BTUs EVs only = 9.7 Quadrillion BTUs EVs would use 4 Quadrillion BTUs LESS than the non-EV transportation industry You were trying to look smart and failed horribly.

As a Mach-E owner, this was a very good exercise to let owners of the Mach-E know what to expect when the battery depletes completely. I also understand your anxiety, I felt some of that anxiety just from watching the video. I have physically compared the Mach-E to a Tesla Model Y, in my opinion, the Mach-E wins hands down. The Mach-E looks totally better than a Model Y and has a much higher build quality. Well done Ford!
@S2kDude362 жыл бұрын
Except the Model Y accelerates faster, charges faster and has a vastly better charging network nationwide. Tesla Autopilot is true Level 2 driving assist with the ability to go fully autonomous in the future. Blue Cruise barely passes for Level 2 cannot hold the lane on a significant curve on the highway. Tesla isn't marking up the Model Y $10k-$20k like Ford dealers are. See Sandy Munro's teardown of the Mach E, he is an automotive industry expert and was very disappointed in how Ford designed the Mach E with so many points of failure in the cooling system. I've parked a Tesla Model Y next to a Mach E, fit and finish is equal on both cars, some people mistake Tesla's minimalism for lower quality when in fact, it's just a simpler design that will be more reliable over time. Ford doesn't make the battery pack or the motors in the Mach E, they are outsourced from other companies and build the Mach E using cheap labor in Mexico. Ford rushed the Mach E to market adapting their existing ICE platform in order to have something to sell to EV buyers. The Mach E is not a bad first attempt from Ford and they will learn and adapt quickly, but for now Tesla is still the gold standard.
