Good video and interesting information, but I'm surprised you didn't also include cost savings from maintenance of an ICE F150 and the Lightning. That would add more savings to the overall difference.

yet we still have to consider, the upfront purchase price of the new truck, the question of longevity (will it last 10 years and if it does, what kind of condition will the electric motors, chargers, and batteries be in), and also what will be the trade in or re-sell value of an ev in 10 years? Lots of unknowns and it takes more than 10 years to recoup that particular fuel savings.. add in the additional time wasted waiting on charging (since it takes wayyyy longer to charge than it does to fill up with gas), since time is money.. sooo many more factors to consider than just fuel prices when it comes to switching.. they'll get there, but it's gotta make financial sense, both for the future and the present..

Charging time only matters if you plan to drive near or over the range. Lowest range of the eF150s is 240mi, but lets say you are pessimistic about battery life so -15% by end of life gives you 204mi range. Should be able to comfortably drive 3 hours in any direction at that range. That’s not perfect for people that travel a lot but, for me, all my family is within that drive range. The only time I’m traveling farther is going to be for vacation or something, so not super common. Another factor not mentioned here is oil changes. Isn’t super expensive but you recoup some of that cost from oil as well, especially if you’re someone that likes using full synthetic. Biggest blindspot I see is that when you do eventually need maintenance, how does that compare and at what milages does it tend to happen.

I had a reservation for the Lightning and wanted the XLT with the extended range. The standard Lightning XLT was $60k-ish. When you added the extended range, it was an additional $19k, making the pre-order @ $80k. I was not about to spend $80k on any truck, especially when a standard ICE 3.5L has a range of 550 miles. I cancelled my reservation and got an ICE 2022 XLT FX4 Texas Edition @ $60k. Until battery prices continue to drop to the point where EVs get cheaper for normal consumers, and charging infrastructure becomes more available, the Lightning will be on the backburner. Couple of things. You have to count your electricity delivery and taxes also. The lightning lariat is at least $15k more to purchase. By the end of the 10 year it will be impossible to sell with those original batteries and your range will be 100-140 miles max/charge.
@4literv6
@4literv6 2 жыл бұрын
Did you even watch the video? A similarly optioned ice lariat was over 75k so factor in the still available tax credit of $7,500 And the lightning is cheaper. Also the federal ev battery warranty is required to cover the pack for 8 year's or 100,000 miles minimum. Some states require the oems to cover them for 10 year's or 120,000 miles. And there are many evs out there with liquid cooled pack's 8-10+year's old still retaining 90%+ of their initial range and with over 200,000-300,000 miles. Not just teslas either. Tesloop has a few in Cali that have even more miles on the pack's. Last I saw one of their original model s had a pack over 350,000 miles on it with daily multiple supercharger sessions to. 👍🏻

@@4literv6 you hit on some great points that need further explanation. There is indeed a federal 8 year warranty, however it allows for degradation of up to 4% per year. Most cars average 1-2%, but after 8 years, the federal warranty only requires 65% of the pack to be usable. There is a laundry list of items that can lead to a warranty claim being denied (# of level 3 fast charges, unauthorized chargers, failure to install firmware, use as a mobile battery, etc). Kia was sued in March and won - found that limiting a person from fast charging fewer than once a week was "reasonable", and the judge denied the claim for battery replacement because the owner fast charged over 40 times in 6 months, and commonly used an unauthorized level 2 charger at work. I owned a 70d and sold it in September 2020 because after 5.5 years I had about 86% of my useful battery, and it would not reliably do 170 mile (highway) round trips without a recharge, and Tesla said that was within spec. I don't agree with a few of Mitchell's calculations: A) long term gas prices - he took the highest point in history as an example B) maximum efficiency (to date there has not been one real world test where a lightning has gotten 300 miles on the extended battery or 210 on the standard) C) he failed to account for a ~3.5% efficiency loss on battery charging D) his blend of highway to City driving likely does not mirror that if typical truck drivers. E) drive the 11,700 miles the average American drives I'm not concerned with his electricity rate because it is about average, but some places like California are closer to .23 per kW, and other, such as TN are only .097. If you drive 80% highway at 70-75 mph, pay 11 cents per kWh like me, account for a 3.5% loss for charging, fast charge twice a week (I take care of a parent Friday- Sunday that lives 147 miles away), and use the 5 year gas average, the cost per mile will be within 2-3 cents, or $300/ year. When I owned my 70d, my cost per mile was higher than my wife's Avalon, and she drove 16 miles daily on City roads, where I used to drive 24 miles on the highway. People always say EV's are maintenance free, but watch out for tires and shocks.
@4literv6
@4literv6 2 жыл бұрын
@@Xander-dx6mw gas adjusted for inflation is still cheaper than it was in the last great recession of 08. You claim the ev battery warranty allows for 4% degradation per year. Which is false the terms require at least 70% of the initial rated range capacity at the end of 8 years or 100,000 miles. Your own battery degradation was only 13.5% over 5.5 year's topping out at around 2.3% per year in degradation. Not sure anything you say can be taken with any seriousness. 🤔

@@4literv6 at 10 years it will be out of warranty. I see the numbers also. I like the idea of simplicity. A battery and a couple of motors. Low cost of maintenance, but would you buy one when it is 10 years old with 150k on the battery? I wouldn't. Furthermore, these numbers are for driving it in the city and like a car. Mileage comes down when you are on the hwy going 75mph and/or if you use it like a truck with payload and towing. TFL truck just tested the towing with the extended range and it was less than 100 miles. I like the innovation, but they have a long way to go. The charging network is not there. Can't even charge with the trailer attached. A 300 mile tow with the ice is 5 hours and one stop for gas. The same tow is 8-10 hours and unhooking the trailer twice which is not safe at all.

What about longevity? What if you’re a guy that doesn’t get a new truck every 2 to 3 years. You can more than likely keep a new F150 for 10 or even more years as some people do. How long should we expect a lightning to last? Before any major expense that is. New battery? How often?

I have a fusion hybrid and the batteries have come a long way since then. The car is 8 years old and the battery still seems to be going strong. The battery does not last 10 years and the replacement battery cost $25000. When traveling, charging can cost up to $40 per basic fast charge. The cost benefits aren't conclusive. I want an EV but even Ford top mechanics are not sold on the EV concept.
@MBergyman
@MBergyman 2 жыл бұрын
@@paulnorman8548 "The battery does not last 10 years" - there is plenty of evidence with newer batteries having very little degradation over time. I bought my Chevy Bolt with over 100k miles, and no real practical loss in range. I get your concern, but statistically it is a very low risk. Regarding fast charge, again, statistically it is not relevant. If you plan to do nothing to your home infrastructure to allow you to charge, and will only be DCFC for all your charging needs, then obviously you plan for that cost in your analysis. But it is not a ding against the vast majority of people's situations. Also, who cares if Ford mechanics are not sold on it? They obviously have conflicts of interest here, as their livelihood and expertise is currently in servicing vehicles. If you all of a sudden have fewer jobs as a result of a new technology, that is obviously going to affect your opinion of that technology. Oil companies are not sold on the EV industry either, as they'd rather sell more oil. The equestrian industry was not sold on the car at the turn of the 20th century. The list of these kinds of terrible arguments goes on.

I think you forgot to add some things: a) ~$1000 for home charger w/ install b) at your current rate of 16.5k miles a year, you would exhaust Ford's 100k battery warranty in 6 years. Over time the battery pack will reduce in performance and you won't get the same range compared to brand new. c) potentially higher insurance premium and registration fees in some states as well. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to get my Lariat too! but I think people should be aware that they will need to spend more time charging on the road and more money upfront on charging, insurance premiums, and registration fees.

A couple of factors that you left off the video. The lightning still qualifies for the federal tax credit of $7500 so the price of the lightning is actually cheaper than an equally spec'ed gas f150 gas variant. Also, if you live in a state like Texas where the state offers an additional $2,500 rebate then it makes even more sense to go electric. Also, the cost to replace your oil also goes away, replacing the oil 3 times a year comes out to about $300 more in yearly savings.

I think the answers would be interesting. I always assumed the draw to EV pickups was the prospect of saving money via not having to buy gasoline/diesel and engine fluids anymore. Clearly that's not the case because people are willing to pay $20k to $50k more money to get one of these EV pickups vs. a traditional ICE pickup. So....what IS the reason? Driving the equivalent Ford F-150 getting about 28 miles per gallon, now figure average gas prices. Are you really getting a good savings on gas? Real world driving is much more accurate then an EPA website. Oh and they had to stop 11 times to charge going an average of 70mph highway with charge times between 36min-1hr. I'm very interested in the f 150 lightning. I have a very important question. I have a big boat and I wonder about launching the boat if you have to back into the water. I haven't had to yet but I only take it to 1 lake now because it's convenient and close but I plan for future weekend trips. Also instead of a charge point can the lightning be charged with a generator that has the 220 15 Amp plug in. So if you're camping and use the truck battery too long can it be recharged with the generator.

Water is no problem at all. Look for youtube videos of Teslas in high water as your proof. Charging on a generator is possible, but you will need to ground it or use a "cheater" plug. I am going to assume that you have a very small generator that has 120 v 15 amp plug (there are no generators in the US that do 220, but larger generators have 240 v plugs, usually 30 or 50 amp), and 120 v X 15 amp = 1.8 kW So, it will take over 24 hours to add 50% charge and about 3 days to go from empty to full. If you have 240v 30 amp outlet on your generator you can get fully juiced up in about 12-15 hours.

Thank you for the information I looked at harbor freight for the generator. I found a couple with the 220 or 240 plugs. I don't know much about generator and got confused with all the information I was trying to compare between different sizes. 1 I looked at claimed that the 220 output was capable of running a stick welder. I have used one those in the past and know that they pull a lot of electricity and that's the generator I was thinking about

Each state has a different price for electricity. Hawaii tends to be the highest with roughly 33 cents kwh. Also, are you going to account for the time to charge an all electric vehicle? If you were to have 2 F150s do a cross country trip (same exact route), 1 being the Lightning and the other a combustion engine, the combustion engine F150 would get to the destination significantly quicker.

Per kWh rates in CA are .34 to .60 cents each, which is equivalent to gas at $9.35 to $16.25 a gallon for a vehicle getting 40 to 50mpg, of which there are tons. This isn't gonna happen in CA fellas. I tried that site in the video, gas actually saves you $2k a year to $6k a year depending on off peak vs on peak electricity rates, under NO SCENARIO does electric save money over gas at these rates and that is with gas at $6 a gallon, the break even for off peak was $9.35 gallon gas and on peak $16.25 gallon gas...

It depends on the gas mileage and price of gas vs price per kWh. Fast Charging between $0.31 and 0.43, and gas today here in Texas was under $5.00/gallon ($4.50). Assuming that we are driving from Corpus Christi to San Angelo, TX (which I drove today in my Bronco at 22.5mpg @ 80MPH). I tracked roughly 4 hours of the trip today (3h.59m.55s) and averaged 76.5 mph including a fuel/rest stop (306.5 miles total). The F-150 on TFL driving an easier route was averaging 1.9 miles/kWh at far less than 75 MPH average. 300 miles at 0.31/kWh is $48.95 and at 0.43/kWh is $67.89. A month or two ago gas was $3.50, today the average is about $5.00; making the trip from $46.66 to $66.67. That's real world with my 2.7 Bronco today... Premium was $5.10 today where I purchased it ($67.99 in gas using premium) . So if currently you are charging at home, sure you will save some money. My Bronco was only $47,953, the lightning was how much? 80k? I can buy a lot of gas with $32k. Also what is your time worth per hour? No way you make that trip from Corpus Christi to San Angelo at 80MPH on a single charge. So add an hour to your trip time. That drops your effective average speed to 60 MPH. Assuming that the lightning was $30 cheaper over the trip, saving the time is totally worth it (I am sure that you are not valuing your time at less than $30/hour). Now, I have a 2011 F-150 3.5 ecoboost that gets about 19 mpg, can make the trip from Corpus Christi to San Angelo without stopping, cost me $10k in 2015. $60k would buy more than 10 years of gasoline and I would not have to scrap the truck because the battery doesn't work anymore. I want to see a lightning do 250k miles in 10 years like my 3.5 ecoboost F-150, it's not going to happen.

This is good Insight but if you are using an extended range battery for its intended use, like traveling, towing, etc you would have to charge on the road where charging stations are a lot more than .14 per kWh, they are more like .43 per kWh which would definitely make a bit of difference in the long term cost gas vs electric

GMC also purchases your used batteries back from you to build their power walls, so even once you've got to buy a new battery for your truck, it's coming at far less than the cost of an engine. It will out live 2,3 probably 4 gas powered trucks.

Just a note on using coal power for EVs vs gasoline for ICE. or EVs we have coal mined with diesel machines > moved by diesel trucks then diesel trains, then burned, then into your EV. For ICE cars we have: extracted by rigs using heavy fuel oil for power, moved by ships with heavy fuel oil, refined with massive coal power plant, moved again by diesel trains and/or trucks then burned in your ICE car. Even coal to power an EV is still a lot cleaner than gas if you look at the whole chain. It takes a hell of a lot of power to crack crude into gasoline or diesel.
