I was involved in a motorcycle accident last month. A car in front of me wasn't paying attention to a speed change and slammed on their breaks. This started a domino effect and I was at the back of the dominos. My bike came down on my foot and ankle. Thankfully, nothing was broken. However, I lost a good chunk of skin and my ankle and big toe were black and blue from being smashed. I had to complete a fit test for work today. This included a one and a half mile run. I was able to complete the test in the required time. Even though my ankle/foot wasn't at 100%. I've decided that I want this fit test to be easy next year. I'm going to use videos like this to prep for my fit test next year. I plan on killing it next year. I just completed the test with a bum ankle. There are no excuses!

I must need the beginner beginner workouts lol ... my cardio system is in great shape even after battling cancer for 2 years and I can do a 75 minute workout split into 15 minutes in each zone including zone 5 and when the workout is over I feel like I could just do it again. I'm also a (pre-cancer was a) long distance hiker so running miles mean nothing to me, not intimidating. I lift weights regularly. My problem with running has plagued me for years and that is .... ankle pain, calf pain, itb pain. I should also mention I am 53 years old and I used to run track when I was much much younger and loved it. Anyways, post-cancer my goal was to get ripped ... so I am shooting for 10% body fat and I started in May 2022. I'm constantly changing my workouts, no two days are the same and I wanted to incorporate running into my current routine. Just about 6 weeks ago I couldn't even run 30 second intervals outside. But I don't like failure so I kept trying. I changed shoes, i started stretching more, and just didn't give up. I also bought a treadmill thinking I could work on improving my running on a treadmill then transition to outside (greatest idea I ever had). I've had the treadmill 3 weeks and some of the workouts it has are obviously intervals. I started walking A LOT, 5x30 minute sessions a day first at 0 degree intervals then increase it by 1 degree every 5 minutes so I ended at 5 degrees, Then I transitioned to walking at 6 - 9 degrees. All the while I am doing initially a 30 sec 1 minute split intervals for only 8 minutes ... it was a struggle. But I finally did it, albeit slower. I started increasing the speed and then that 30 sec 1 minute split got easy. So I found another one that was 45 minutes with a 1 minute 2 minute split ... and I repeated the process ... as it got easier, I increased speed or incline, then I even reversed the work/rest so I was running 2 minutes and walking 1 minute. In only 6 weeks I was able to go from "can't even run for 30 seconds" to "I just ran 15 minutes without stopping". The morel of the story is, just don't give up .... quitters never win. Hopefully this will help some other beginner beginner runners.

As someone who does easy zone 2 runs 80% of the time, I really look forward to the harder runs where I challenge myself. One of my most fun workouts is 5 miles where every subsequent mile is faster. I use mile 1 as my warmup at 10-minute pace and try to finish my last mile under 8:00. It's exhausting but rewarding. And I find that it improves my zone 2 paces.

I do bodybuilding before but when I get older I change my workouts and now that I am 40 I do calisthenics. My goal now is to at least do my first marathon.. Maybe 5k just to begin with. Again appreciate for sharing your knowledge and for inspiring. Who knows I might start to be a full pledge runner. God bless and stay fit!

These aren't workouts. This is just a list of the types of runs all people do at some point. In running the word "workouts" refers to harder efforts. Typically they refer to track intervals, tempo days, and even a long run with marathon pace effort. Easy efforts, recovery runs, and long runs are not workouts. The title "Running Workouts for Beginners" implies there are specific workouts (eg. 6xMile at marathon pace) for beginners to do in the midst of their training.

Hey Matt, I've set a goal for myself to achieve level 10 on the beep test/ multistage fitness test. I can currently get around level 8, depending on the day it'll fluctuate between 7.5 and 8.5. so I'm pretty far off. How should I go about increasing the beep test? My running routine consists of 1 to 2 easy runs (2 km) per week, I'm not a fan of running but I really want to hit this goal. I feel like if I keep smashing the beep test I'll hopefully eventually get to level 10 but it just seems inefficient because after one beep test I'm burnt. what would you recommend I do? Cheers for your help :)

Hey guys I'm currently at 80kgs with a height of 5.6ft/168cm and 29% body fat. I aim to lose 20kgs in the next 3 months while focusing on muscle development and overall fitness. After that With 7-months of training plan under the guidance of a coach and training @high altitudes, my goal is to run a sub-3 hour marathon in 2024. Given your expertise, do you believe achieving this milestone is possible? I've had success with weight loss and running before but faced setbacks. Determined to make a lasting change this time. My prs 10k-1hr , 20k-2hr10min (I was in caloric deficit at that time)not participated in any races and didn't done any speed workouts

This is super helpful... my only concern is I can't run and maintain a HR in the 135-145 range. Anytime I run it's in the high aerobic zone per my Garmin. Hence to get my low aerobic score up on Garmin's "load focus" bar graph I have to just walk a while after my run at 3.5mph. Any recommendations or tips?

Question for the comment section. Does anyone else deal with bumps on the front side of their shins? After starting to run for 2 weeks, probably more and harder than I should have been, I’ve noticed them, and they’re starting to hurt. I think they may be some sort of hernia in the shins
