Ya know Jon, here in Canada, Pan the Organizer has a very recognizable intro to his new video posts. Once, while bring up a new video, my wife heard it and called out, “You better be not ordering new stuff”! Getting that way now when she hears “Welcome back to the Forensic Detailing Channel”. It’s to the point now I have to go down in the basement in the dark to watch any new detailing videos. Till the next one.😂😂😂

Great video. The main thing you are facing is this, you need a stronger Degreasing Solvent for your wax and filler products such as U-Pol. The reason you see it is slightly more filled in some areas is the IPA isn't strong enough to remove the grease fully, so it is less "swirly". Personally I would stick to the bodyshop stuff as it's only £17.99 per 5 Litres and is much more effective, you'll also notice U-Pol is in an aluminium container, leading you to the correct thought that it is more concentrated. You are also absolutely correct, the better the surface preparation the better your last step will look. Think of it like this, if you sand your living room walls and get the plaster absolutely smooth, the emulsion will look much better. We do the same process by claying, polishing and decontaminating.

Im not sure I agree with that m8 but its an interesting discussion. even hydro carbon prep will not remove freshly cured modern wax from a panel we demo'd this a fair few times over the years.. Its not about concentration with a hydrocarbon because you dont water a hydrocarbon down you could only alter concentration with other polar solvents its more about the type of hydrocarbons used in the formulation and their chemical function. Hydrocarbons have their problems though thats why they tend to be less favoured, in winter you need a workshop environment or a lot of times they can take hours to flash in cold temps. The reason IPA is favourable is a consistent and much faster evaporation rate and lower flash temp. But yer your not wrong in the sense a hydrocarbon can be a more potent cleaner for waxes, silicons, greases and oils etc.. but perhaps not "best" who knows.... The rest of the discussion around prep and durability, over the years Ive come to the conclusion its less of an issue than is made out by the industry. a product backboned by wax will not extent its durability if you degrease prep (at least not in a way you would easily be able to measure). And it will not improve gloss by removing the polishing oils prior to wax application. the analogy with painted walls is not accurate to cars due to the absense of clearcoat. the layer of laquer provides a big portion of the spectural qualities in an automotive finish. This laquer gets packed out with the polishing oils which reduces haze from the filling effect. Degrease and you lower the filling effect as you flush the oils out. The good news for waxes is they dont mechanically bond to a surface like an amino functional siloxane for example. so in some ways you are better to polish and then wax, rather than polish, degrease and wax. Also when you panel wipe a clearcoat thats just been intensivly polished that clearcoat is warmer and packed with solvent and closer to its natural melting point which makes it more suspectable to contact marring from the wipedown, especially when you soften it further with that final degrease wipe, plus after the degrease wipe you pack it with hydrocarbon carrier again from the wax and buff on it again. When Im looking for a show finish I will typically machine apply a glaze and do one buff and thats it dont touch it, thats like the ultimate show finish for me. I will demo soon the difference between prep'd degreased applied durability versus no degrease. With wax it makes little difference, we have also seen with coatings it makes less difference than we are lead to believe.. All this being said though all of the above is mainly detailing theory and thats it. We all have difference experiences and when all is said and done. I always love a good wax mate and I bet you do too! :)

@@ForensicDetailing Hi, I owe you an apology! I rarely use panel wipe for pre wax prep and your video got my research juices going! So I just grabbed a trade panel wipe that I had (very strong stuff) and whilst it did start to break down the wax, I could see lines between the beading, after 2 applications the wax was still very much in place. So there we have it, panel wipe doesn't remove wax! I sadly believed the claims of others and didn't research this myself. Of course Panel Wipe is meant for bodyshop prep, but many Panel Prep's do say they remove waxes - which they don't. Mystery solved. For prep, I am on the same side as you, I rarely use Panel Wipe on my own car before sealing or waxing. You are a braver man than me wiping a hot car down, come on! You know better than this! haha Before applying wax, I will get some Pure and just clean the paint, I still reach for our Pre Wax cleaner, it tidies up the paint enough and has enough grunt to mildly polish the paint, again the wax will melt in with the polish - depending how much is left on the paint. The analogy I think was taken a little too directly with regard to the walls :), I was trying to say that if you even/flatten your paint via Polishing, removing or softening the undulations then the paint will look much better as part of the prep. It just depends on how far one wishes to take it. Stranglely I'm not an advocate of Panel Wipe, but I am aware many people use it. The Panel wipe stage is all about how honest you want your paint to be with you. If you are happy with the filling side effects of using a polish, then go right ahead and wax - if you want to know exactly how meticulous your paint is - you'll need to remove those oils. This is a personal choice, we have customers that want/need both. Again, always good to hear from you and always enjoy having a detailing discussion.

Not sure about the UK market, but in America all the bodyshop and paint brands have their own paint prep products with varies hydrocarbon formulas. They're more expensive than mixing IPA, but still far cheaper than detailing brands.

John I’m in USA we are seeing crazy durability from griots 3-1 ceramic wax. It’s really odd as water based topper it seems to get more hydrophobic after 2 weeks can u test that if water based products actually cure over time like really coating

Don’t know what I’m doing wrong, but I can polish a panel to a very good standard, no swirls or scratches, and when I use the panel wipe it scratches it all up again! Is this just revealing the scratches that have been masked? Or is it actually marring the paint? It’s exactly where I sweep the cloth.
@ForensicDetailing
@ForensicDetailing 2 ай бұрын
could be either mate without being there hard to say. its less likely its revealling it all though. sometimes when you polish you are softening the paint with heat and packing the paint with solvent in the polish and you then panel wipe it. then sometimes repeat. the clearcoat temp is raised closer to its natural melting point and that softening effect can mean the wipe down mars up the paint. you get it generally with poor aftermarket paints that are not as hard and you see it more on black.

Use a high quality microfibre cloth and plenty of of panel wipe. GYEON Prep for first wipe down, and 20 minutes later UPOL S2001/5 with a different mf cloth. An inferior mf cloth will inflict those small scratches

Have you ever tried making your own panel wipe using d-limonene Jon? Like you have previously with surfex etc. Be curious to know how that performs as a panel wipe.

yes mate. the d-limonene didnt seem to go in well, it created like a white syrup flem that didnt easily mix with the wax. I was expecting it to just blend in. So I didnt mess with it any more than that. hard to get D-limonene now its price rocketted.

@ForensicDetailing Hi Jon thanks for the info as I was thinking of trying this myself. Good to know it doesn't really work unfortunately! Have you tried the carchem panel wipe & have any thoughts on it? That's my go to now the Upol is finished. Seems to work but it does give off the feel/smell of just being an IPA mix. I got it in the black friday sales so it only cost me £9.60, a bargain really.
