I got my worst cut from a knife by the age of 8. I was trying to make my own leather sheath for my new hunting knife (a gift from my uncles) and I cut deep right to the bone. The forefinger of my left hand was basically half cut off 😅 Happend at 10 pm and my parents rushed my to a doc, but as it happens in mother russia in 1989 in a small village, doc was out of anaesthetics, so I got stitched without it. But the doc did a great job. Today at the age of 40, there is just a very pale scar and the finger works just fine. 👍

Yeah. My cousin was cutting fire wood for my mom. Chainsaw kicked back and got him right above the knee cap. Walked into the house and asked for a band aid ..... while blood was running down his leg. Mom said let me look at that cut ...... good thing he sat when he did ...... again asked for a band aid so he could go back to cutting wood .... mom said you're not going anywhere but the hospital cuz I can see bone ...... got stitched up, came back to the house and went back to cutting wood ...... he was dumb.

I worked for a company that made store shelving fixtures out of sheet metal and we were supplied with cotton lined rubber gloves or the type of cotton gloves that has the little rubber dots on the palm side. They were more for gripping the sheets than for hand protection and at the end of a 6 day work week the gloves would be almost useless due to all the cuts from the edges of the sheets. We were also taught to pinch rather than put our palms against the metal. Inevitably you would get little nicks on your hands and those were terribly painful and like you mentioned they bleed alot. There was always a roll of duct tape nearby for fixing your gloves and using to cover the cuts.

Hi Shawn, last June, I sliced 4 fingers on my saw table while i was repairing my cedar planter boxes. Two of the fingers were cut to the bone. Doctors sewed the fingers up and follow up Plastic surgery followed immediately to repair tendons and soft tissue. The hand therapists were totally awesome as well as the emergency attendants at the Peter Loughheed Hospital in Calgary. Even though the repairs made were excellent, I only have 70 percent use of my right hand. They tell me to be patient. As well, any temperature below - 6 C freezes the right hand freezes to the bone. I am struggling to play my guitar, it’s gonna take a little time. I’m not one to complain, I’ve gotten by unscathed for most of my life for 69 years. I can identify with your story and follow your channel. Cheers and warmest regards !

Excellent comment about dull vs. sharp. My worst cuts were always with a sharp blade, usually a new razor blade. Then you get that oh s moment and being a carpenter/ handyman, I need my hands. It doesn't hurt, but you feel it. I always carry a bunch of good band-aids. The flow works with drains also.

Thank you, Shawn, for sharing your observations and thoughts, while working on this job. I can imagine the challenge to make a choice between not making too much costs (on a temporarily installed stove) and still doing it proper and safe. That's maybe one of the skills of self reliance, to weigh the costs on one side, and the conditions one lives in with certain standards, choosing between creating waste by choosing inferior cheap material or more expensive quality for durable constructions, which proves cheaper on the long run. It all depends on if one can look past the length of one's nose, as we say in The Netherlands.😊 Keep on trucking 👍
