Tom - In a past life , I used the following technique. I trued the shaft and added a concentric center hole. Supported all of it with a Ball Bearing Center. Filed the ugly O.D. then added a husky knurl. Turned the knurl to fit the bearing. A blast from the past . - Jim

Shafts ???? 1 of my first jobs out of school. Apprentice in a Shaft Shop. Every sort of Shaft you could think of, we did them all. When I finished my Apprenticeship I Never wanted to see another Shaft again LOL. Thankfully my next job was working Maintenance in an open cut mine. The only Shafts I saw there were the Hydraulic Shafts for the quarry trucks. My job was to simply remove them and get them ready for transport for someone else to do the work 😄 Don't you hate it when you build up the Shaft and it's still undersize 😒 We used different process for reclaiming. Never really had the usual problems assorted with doing one offs that you managed to get stuck with. I'm guessing this job didn't exactly hit your hourly rate ?? The only positive you can take from it is you managed to at least getting a video out of the job 🙂👍

G'day Tom. Lost of welding & machining but eventually there was a good outcome, because the baring fitted really well I realise that you have a great selection of tools & machines in your shop, & this might have been a one of, of this type of shaft rebuilding, maybe It's time to invest in a Metal Spraying Kit, which would have cut your time by about 30%, and would have been easier on your time & carbide tips. Great video overall. Keep up the good works Ted

Don't you just hate those last minute walk in's but you try and get your customers going again and it keeps them coming back when they need something quickly. What I hate is when they have a habit of crying wolf every time they need something. I fixed a shaft like you last minute end of day thing and found out later it was over a week before they used it. When I started charging big expedite fees to them all that stopped. People will take advantage of you if you let them. You have to weed out the bad apples sometimes. Great job on the shaft...

5.5 hours of machining and welding. I had to wait 2.5 hours for the shaft to cool down before I could start machining so that made for such a long night. Less than 800 but not by too much since they are a good repeat customer.
