Steven's voice is so damn expressive. He doesn't have much range but he doesn't need it. Imagine his singing if he have at least 70% of Freddie Mercury's range. Every creature on Earth will shed tears at the same time.
@Spermofdog6 жыл бұрын
He said in one of the interview that he hate oversinging and I'm 100% with him on that. The tragedy of lots of potentially good singers with wide vocal range is that they feel obliged to demostrate it as often as possible instead of using it to serve the songs.

The works of a composers lives from the gaze that is given to it. It is not limited to what it is, nor to the one who produced it, it is also made by the one who hears it. Music, painting and sculpture are a space of questioning and meditation where the senses that we attribute to it can come and be done and be undone at any time✨

I never thought anyone would be even close to filling Guthrie's shoes. Dave impressed me beyond belief. I still love Guthrie, but Dave serves the band as well. Guthrie has a grittier sound with his leads and more chime with his clean tones. It's all in the picking. Dave has a more modern sound. I've seen Steve many times, through all of his lineup changes, and I can say that they have all impressed me. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't sound right without Marco's drumming. Gavin played on the first album and I think he would be able to give us that effect, as well. I've never been unimpressed or upset for any of his performances. Everyone that has played in this band is a substantial musician. For anyone who doesn't know, Steve has had Jordan Rudess, Tony Levin, Trey Gunn, Pat Mastelotto, Steve Hackett, Gavin Harrison and more on his albums.

I remember Guthrie being asked in an interview if he had concerns about another guitarist playing his parts in Steven Wilson's band incorrectly. He said, "no, cos it's Dave". I actually saw Dave play with Guthrie at "music live" at the NEC in Birmingham UK over a decade ago, when Guthrie was promoting erotic cakes. Two masters who at the time were unsung. It's great to see both finally getting recognition for their amazing talent.

Reason never seems to come to guilty men Things that meant so much mean nothing in the end That function is dysfunction and to hide the truth Distracted by their faith, ignoring every proof A bicycle A garden wall A mother's call A love is born And after all, the sleet that falls on me In this city there are these who'd live alone Twilight brings them from the gloom into our homes And hiding there among the wreckage left behind They see things that aren't there when they close their eyes Come back if you want to And remember who you are 'Cause there's nothing here for you my dear And everything must pass When the world doesn't want you It will never tell you why You can shut the door but you can't ignore The crawl of your decline You can try if you want to You can try Come, child Go back if you want to

I loved the solo but it didn’t create the same tension and release as I hoped it would. It’s a great solo and Dave is a great player. He can improvise well, but if I were to rehearse or practice the solo for the song with my own improve I would practice how to build tension and release because it matches the same energy as the chord progression for that solo. That’s what makes that solo so great! Same example is Petrucci’s Best of times solo. Tension and release! Build up and match the same energy as the progression. And resolve gracefully.

Craig and Dave are great players, and simply bring something DIFFERENT to Steven's music. That being said - yes, I agree Guthrie's solos are nothing short of amazing. I've watched the video (repeatedly, 'cause I can't get enough) of him studio-recording the solo in Regret #9, and it's mindblowing! Should note, though, that he always improvises those solos, as does Dave... so kudos to both for walking that tightrope, and always killing it. :)
