IR Illuminators for NV & IR Safety, pt.1-of-3

I joined Bruce in his (somewhat shivery) man-cave, to discuss Infra-Red (IR): sources, types, do’s and don’ts.

Bruce has emailed that he's pleasantly surprised how this first part comes across, he did spot a slight error... "I did make one boo boo when I said a nanometer was one thousandth of a millionth of a millimetre. I should have said one thousandth of a millionth of a metre." Cheers. Russ

Russ the simplest way to tell if your torch is on (at night), if its not fitted with a power indicator is to put your hand in front of the beam and you can instantly see the beam on your palm, with most commonly used LED and laser and VSCEL illuminators, saves trying to stare directly at it to check.

Cheers Ian, yep but as my footage showed the push switches are not very positive (at all), I'm chuffed I can now be confident of what power level the IR's at to start-with, before I step out on my Permissions. Hope you're ready for lots of sales enquiries too? ;o) Cheers. Russ

I’m polish, in my country I invent the Tatamovich Kurvascope 9000i illuminator using old vodka bottle and led ,It can light up football pitch from 10,000 meters, in Poland I am fully qualified electrical,electronics, physics,nuclear science,and molecular chemistry engineer, but here in the Uk where I live I work in sausage packing factory. I am wasted in this country , I am best night shooter in world,like betman.

Hi great video, I've got a pard 007 and want to upgrade the longer range vision of it, I've noticed a company called opticfire which do led ir lights such as the ag67 and a vcsel laser called the equinox, I'm guessing the vcsel would be the one to go for?

Thanks Russ, I ended up buying a budget vcsel from ludicrous lumens. About £50, 850nm, T20 style body with frenzel lens and rotary switch. Think it's the same as all the others that it looks like including the opticfire. It is indeed a powerful light, with the pard 007 on a hawke panorama scope I can illuminate trees ,I know to be 750m away, the only downside is the head wobbles slightly and on a tight beam it's noticeable. My way around it (for anyone who's interested) was to pick a beam I like, so just off the tightest (as full stretch beam was too intense and would wash out the image). Shim between the head and main tube with a bit of paper to help centre it, then wrap insulation tape around the joint several times to create a fixed beam. Not ideal but a good budget option and if I'm shooting inside say 100m, I just use the pards own ir light. I've not used a £150 light, no doubt far better but for a hundred pounds saving, these make a good option and really extend your range.
