She described herself as "a white Hungarian Jew from Australia sounding like a 65-year-old black man from Alabama". She spent more than ten years based in the United States but had little chart success there under her own name, yet contributing to releases by Neil Diamond, Men at Work, Sting, Trouble Funk and many others. Geyer returned to Australia in the mid-1990s and her career has continued into the 21st century with her 2003 album, Tenderland, which peaked at #11 on the ARIA albums charts. Renee's music was popular on black American radio station because people thought she was black. Peace out.

Renee’s first album release in the USofA did not put a photo of her on the album. Because they didn’t want to show her as white. I was lucky enough to see her in Adelaide very early on and have loved 🥰 her ever since. Thank you for your appreciation.

@@stevefoulston I saw that interview too and she said that Quincey Jones warned her against it but she thought he didn't know what he was talking about and went right ahead and had a photo of her, as she said " Big pink stupid face put on the cover " and the previous mounting sales immediately fell off. Paul Kelly wrote a song about her defiant personality called " A Difficult Woman " which she at first objected to but later on took it on board as being accurate. To be fair I think she wouldn't have come so far on her great talent alone if she had not had that personal strength and independent streak.. Especially so during her early years trying to break through as a very young female artist in the 1970's.

Hey! You found Renee! 'Top of the Top Tier' Female Vocalists - of all time. Not just in Australia, but Worldwide and sadly very under appreciated on the international stage. It makes me both sad and glad to see recognition building - via these networks - but not in their prime. Much later when most are pretty much past retirement. Renee was an idol who 'taught me how to sing'. I listened to and copied her songs - over - and over - and over. Inspired to stretch to reach up to her seemingly effortless standard. Just a magnificent and very skilled singer. Enjoy more of Renee.👍👋👋👋

I;m watching you and crying like a baby. Renee has been one of My Ladies since the mid-170s. I met Renee in 2004 at a coffee shop in St. Kilda, Melbourne, called Brew-Ha-Ha. I was there doing a tour and promoting my opening that year at the Butterfly Club. She introduced herself, saying "Im a singer too". We had coffee, and became friends. She crashed the stage at some of my performances, and always kept very close since. Her death a few days ago has me undone. i want to thank you for paying such honest tribute to her. She is an icon, known as the Australian Aretha in the day. And thank you for recognizing and elevating Soul. My earliest days at the Sunny Club in Harrisburg, Pa when I was just a teen and hadn't yet learned to bend and blue-up notes. Renee's recordings in those early years taught me so much. Another artist of note, with roots of pure soul is Mary Ann Redmond. I do hope you have covered her. But that is not a request. I know you've got it going on with the donation=request biz, and I totally respect that. We elders on fixed incomes do not have extra cash, but I will leave it to the young ones to unlock the treasure of your expertise my man. Again, thanks for highlighting Renee. She was, is and will always be amazing. Now I have to go wipe the tears from my eyes.

So glad you've finally discovered Renee, she is absolutely incredible, I grew up listening to her in the 70's, she was the undisputed Australian Queen of jazz & soul in the 70's & 80's. I actually recommended her when you first discovered Kate Ceberano, her career started in the early 70's, this was her big hit from '75, an original song written by her guitarist Gary Punch and Mark Paige, there's no doubt she would have been a big influence on John Farnham, John actually covered this song on his "Great Australian Songbook" album released in 2005 where he paid homage to the great Australian songwriters whose songs inspired him throughout his career, here's the audio clip kzbin.info/www/bejne/hafSin1nlNN3esk . Check out "Sweet Love" from her 3rd album "Ready to deal" this is taken from a live TV performance in 1975, she had a fantastic band, awesome jazz/rock/soul fusion kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIDNoIOVi8aUqqs , enjoy the journey

Well it's about time you saw Renee Geyer, my favourite Aussie female singer. Her and Vanetta Fields often do the back up singing for cold chisel's live performances. She started out in the late 70's doing covers like, it's a man's world, always very soulful, yet a little shy about it in the early days. I love her live performances, although her songs were great on records, you can't beat the live stuff. Check out her version of a Paul Kelly song, careless, I actually like that better than Paul's version. Btw, this song was written for her and first recorded by her.

She is another underrated Australian Singer, she had so much soul in her voice, she was definitely 1 of kind. As far as I know she’s Australian. Yes this is back in the 80’s, I think we Aussies were at least 20 years in front of the rest of the world when it came to music. There are so many fabulous Australian Singers from back then and still today. The only difference is travel is far easier now than it was back then. Going overseas was a major undertaking and expensive also back then. So a lot of performers honed their skills here before going overseas and I think it has served them well.🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️
