The majority of Crimea population has been Russian for last 50 years or so. Even before the 2014 annexation, the majority of Crimean population showed solidarity with Russia in a 2009 U.N. poll and again in a (late 2014) U.S. Gallop poll(after the 2014 referendum). In 1991 the Crimean Parliament voted not to be part of Ukraine, but were pressured into becoming part of Ukraine , but, as an autonomous Republic.

If you find out, you'll know why the citizens there voted in a referendum to rejoin Russia. The Russians "took over" Crimea, a country with three million people without firing a shot or killing anyone. There's a reason for that.
