In an interview with Newsnight, the Russian Ambassador to the UK appeared to admit Russian troops may have committed war crimes in Ukraine but he denied targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
The World Health Organization has warned that the lives of millions will be under threat in Ukraine this winter, with temperatures predicted to plummet as low as -20C in some areas.
Russian forces have been accused of damaging half of the country's energy infrastructure already - 10 million people are currently without power.
In a sometimes tense exchange, Andrei Kelin conceded that 'momentum' was with Ukrainian forces, and said Russia would not use nuclear weapons.

How about a 2 state solution for Ukraine and Russia. Russians have lived in present day Ukraine for centuries…it makes absolute sense and will save a lot of unnecessary bloodshed

I still prefer the journalist from previous interviews. She allowed him to lie without interrupting him. At the end for example she let him repeat that Russian language is forbidden in Ukraine. That’s not true. There was a law that the official language is Ukrainian and state workers should approve a Ukrainian language test. And that any publication in a foreign language has to be published in Ukrainian language. Recently they stopped teaching Russian language at schools. That’s not prohibiting Russian language or culture.
@commiemeth

@@hmmmmm2634 1. that's not true; most of the Russians that live in the east only have been there since the Holodomor, and it was Stalin that began the process of settling Russian citizens in the east of Ukraine. Ukraine and the Ukrainian mindset formed truly in the 16th century, a similar time to pure Russian identity but centered on Muscovy not Kiev. Yes now culturally both existed for centuries, but we are talking about the modern states, Ukraine tried to achieve independence from the Russian Empire during ww1 and during the civil war, they launched a successful campaign for that but were later beat by the Red Army of Trotsky and FORCED INTO THE SOVIET UNION. Ukraine has always been sovereign in their hearts and since the 1990s have been free. So two state solution is unrealistic and never works as intended. Plus the people of Ukraine are no longer interested in any deals with the Russians after they stabbed them in the back by taking Crimea.

I am a Nigerian who has lived a significant chunk of his life through war. And I cannot help the wave of anger consuming me right now. The god damn ambassador obviously does not understand what it means to live in a warzone, to witness unspeakable horrors with ones own eyes, but he sits there in his well ironed suit, in a well furnished office and speaks rather flippantly of the suffering of people in this Russian orchestrated catastrophe. Allah knows that if I were the journalist, the interview would end with me being in a cell and the idiot in a morgue. One would never understand the horror of war until you live through it.

Joe Biden made hunter biden perform oral sex on jill biden and then went on to repeatedly rape a made and her 3 kindergarten aged children 2 boys and a girl under 4 years old. If you believe Victoria's claim based on no evidence but a claim from Kiev then you my claim about the Bidens should be as credible and don't ask me how I know this or what evidence I have to support my claim as most of you did not need evidence or question Victoria's claim.

Notice all the propaganda to get us hyped up about wanting to start a war against Russia? How are people so sure we know all the facts when any news with an alternative opinion is banned? What happened to Russia Today news? I lived through times when British media edited out voices of Irish republican politicians, to only hear one side, so our government could keep putting our lives in danger and making everybody hate England for reasons only a few rich people will gain from, while making no attempt at a peace plan. Most people have no memory of politics than the last Tory propaganda headline they read. I always knew most people are dumbed down from how so many people care about what over hyped and talentless celebs are doing. I knew the international bankers who run the USA and Britain had been trying to start a war against Russia for decades, with the hypocritical media information, because Putin and Russia Today news are only ones who remind our own people of how the USA and Britain sell arms to backward nations like Saudi Arabia, where women and other religions don't have full human rights. While we fund extremists to overthrow leaders like Assad in Syria, one of the few middle east nations with many religions that live together in peace, with ancient Christian communities who still speak Aramaic, the language from the time of Jesus. Our media kept saying how Russia was evil because some of their states said there shouldn't be promotion of homosexuality to children. When the law against promotion of homosexuality to anybody in Britain was more severe. Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988 in Britain stated that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship". Which was only repealed in 2003. Also the Guardian newspaper has a lot of anti Putin, Russian journalists. You only have to see how easily led most people are from all the dumb British people who said they wanted to leave the EU as wanted less people here from Pakistan, as the media and politicians like Farage didn't bother to explain to them that the EU means Europe, and made them think it was about immigration from elsewhere, or about asylum. It's only since the Ukraine crisis that it has hit me like a bolt at how dumbed down Britain is. People chanting Ukraine and flying Ukraine flags, while not questioning why any media with another point of view is banned, or why there's a promotion of punishing other Russian people who aren't connected to the government. I'm finding it really disturbing. That would be called racism in any other situation. All most people remember about politics is the last tabloid propaganda headline they read. Who even knows we're more in danger from our own government's actions from making us a USA lapdog? Who remembers when the secret service whistle blower David Shayler told how Tories were using British money to fund Al Qaeda in Libya against Gaddafi? When British people were shot in Tunisia and blown up in Manchester by extremists who trained in Libya after Gaddafi was killed, what media reminded our people that our government helped cause that? Who remembers Afghanistan wasn't run by extremists before the USA armed and trained the religious extremists in Afghanistan against Russia in the 80s? Then the USA didn't care what was going on in Afghanistan for years before 9/11, such as stories about ancient Buddhist statues being blown up and females banned from education.

Look at their other ambassador in the UN: "The US is developing virus spreading mosquitoes (for the winter time!) to be used on the Ukrainian battlefield", or the newest one: "Russia is not targeting the electricity network but the Ukrainians themselves are blowing them up!" - and that's happened openly at front of the world ridiculing these international institutions like "diplomacy" and "UN", and converting them to a "circus" full of Russian comedians. Anyone who sits to talk to them or sign any kinda documents with them will be just a "useful idiot". (Like Mr Chamberlain in 1938.)

Without Russia's "little green men" included (Mr Girkin and his "Novorossiya" movement) seeping into Ukrainian territory (like in Crimea) the situation would've been different. Great interview, but Victoria could also have responded that when the Russian backed civil war in Eastern Ukraine broke out in 2014, Ukraine simply defended their territory against separatists like Russia did in Chechnya and Dagestan, like the UK did in N Ireland, and like the USA did during their civil war in the 1860s. Any country would have done the same. And, out of the approx. 16,000 people killed in Donbass 2014-2022, the majority were soldiers on both sides, Ukrainians and separarists, and while there are always civilian casulties in any war, there were no "mass killings" of civilians in Donbass. On the contrary, a total death count of 16,000 including soldiers would have to be seen as rather confined for an 8 year civil war.

It's funny how people think they know the truth, when any news with another opinion has been banned from British TV. What happened to Russia Today news? Will it stop people being brainwashed and flying the Ukraine flag? It isn't Russia we need to be scared of, it's the British government being USA lapdogs. When British people were shot in Tunisia and blown up in Manchester by extremists who trained in Libya after Gaddafi was killed, why didn't British media remind us of when the secret service whistle blower Da vid Shayler told how Britain was going along with the USA funding Al Qaeda in Libya against Gaddafi? Look at all the British people who died going along with the USA in Afghanistan, for the USA to just give up, and nobody cares about all the females who won't have an education, as now Britain has left the EU, the international bankers who run the USA and Britain are using Russia as an excuse to start WWIII. Afghanistan wasn't even run by extremists until the USA were arming and training the extremists in Afghanistan against Russia in the 80s.

At 13:47, the Russian ambassador stated that "This is war", and at 15:00, mentioned "this war" against Ukraine - in contrast to the previous assertions of the Russian government that the conflict was a "special military operation". Also, at 18:05, the Russian ambassador stated "any war is ended in - at the table of negotiations". Note the use of the word "war" clearly contradicts the Russian government's view that the conflict with Ukraine is a "special military operation". The ambassador continues to make statements contradictory to the views of the Russian government later in the video, thus making him a poor representative of said government.

The Kremlin doesnt need to speak to Western citizens at all if they don't want to. So, i am wondering if this interview represents a signal of some kind. Is the Kremlin beginning to consider coming to the table for peace talks? Or are they still trying to erect smoke and mirrors while engaging in imperialistic aggressions? One alternative ... Absolutely Agreed and Supported. The lying, self justifying, POS, Andrei Kelin is sounding far less self-assured and composed than in previous interviews. I believe that he is feeling very lonely in his comfortable pad in London. The interviewer did a fabulous job in presenting him with issues that Russia has imposed on Ukrainians, to which he had no logical or realistic answers. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦 VICTORY for UKRAINE 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

Question (Norwegian News Agency): I am sorry Jamie but if you say that the Army has a lot of back-up generators, why are you depriving 70% of the country of not only electricity, but also water supply, if he has so much back-up electricity that he can use because you say you are only targeting military targets? Jamie Shea : Yes, I'm afraid electricity also drives command and control systems. If President Milosevic really wants all of his population to have water and electricity all he has to do is accept NATO's five conditions and we will stop this campaign. But as long as he doesn't do so we will continue to attack those targets which provide the electricity for his armed forces. If that has civilian consequences, it's for him to deal with but that water, that electricity is turned back on for the people of Serbia. Unfortunately it has been turned off for good or at least for a long, long time for all of those 1.6 million Kosovar Albanians who have been driven from their homes and who have suffered, not inconvenience, but suffered in many cases permanent damage to their lives. Now that may not be a distinction that everybody likes but for me that distinction is fundamental.

Here's the background to this interview. In 2014 about 65% of Ukrainians voted in favour of independence from Russia. About 10% wanted to stay with Russia. The Russian-sympathetic Government was thus forced out of power. Most of those who wanted to stay with Russia were first-language Russian speakers and they lived on the side of the country that is next to Russia. Most Ukrainians wanted to remain friendly with Russia but also wanted to join the EU. The question of joining Russia's own Customs Union was out-voted. All of this de-stabilised the region. For Ukraine was yet one more country that used to be part of the Soviet Union 'family', which had turned its back on Russia and wanted instead to be part of the West (that is, the 'enemy' of Russia during the cold war). Russia was sympathetic to those Russian-speakers in the east who refused to be forced away from Russia by that Independence vote. Elements of these Ukrainians started to fight with a view to separating their regions from Ukraine. Russia sent in under-cover troops to support them, resulting in the Crimea and other eastern regions becoming separated-off from Ukraine and under Russian control. For Russians, they have just been looking after their friends. Biased referendums were held to 'prove' that the great majority of people of these regions wanted to be Russian and they welcomed the Russian takeover. For Ukraine and the West, Russia was occupying regions of a neighbouring sovereign State, against the wishes of the majority of its people and against international law. There was a treaty to halt the fighting, but it and other cease-fires quickly failed. Then in 2021 the Russian Government, under Putin's control, decided to do away with the Ukrainian Government once and for all and install a Russian-sympathetic Government in its place. For years, the Russian people had been told that the Ukrainian Government was 'fascist' and was persecuting those Russians who wanted to remain close to Russia. So the cover-story for the invasion was that this was an operation to 'free the Ukrainians from fascism and genocide'. Putin's only real critics lay in the outside world and he refused to listen to their advice to respect Ukraine as an independent sovereign state. Anyone in Russia who challenged him was arrested and denounced as 'unpatriotic', and laws were passed to silence dissent. The West had done little to interfere with his retaking of the eastern regions, so he assumed they would do nothing again. But for safety, he threatened nuclear war if they moved in to defend Ukraine. The West did what it could and supplied the Ukrainians with advanced weaponry which, combined with the Ukrainians' determination not to become Russian again, resulted in Russian forces withdrawing, having failed to seize the capital, Kiev. The Ambassador presents the Russian story-line that Russia has just been defending the rights of 'their own' people in Ukraine, who were being egregiously oppressed, and it is the 'interference' of the West that has caused the fighting to be both deadly and prolonged. Also, Russia has repeatedly sought peace talks and an agreed settlement but Ukraine is the 'implacable aggressor' and refuses to come to terms. Yes, civilians have been harmed 'but only by accident' and Ukrainian forces also have harmed civilians in the eastern regions. For Putin, the West remains the 'enemy' of Russia and ultimately wants to 'see Russia destroyed'. The expansion of NATO is 'proof' that Russia must be proactive and 'save itself from the Western threat'.
