That you claim "America" not being poor is hilarious, as it's one of the most poor western countries looking at average and lower class citizens. Even the american state is not rich. It's actually the opposite, the USA having the highest debts in the world, besides the Weimar Republic even the highest in all Human history. You must also consider the capitalist or lobbyist how some call them. In representative democracies economical influence in legislation and the executive branch in government is naturally a great problem. It's no secret but common knowledge that the USA (as an example, surely any other state has or had similar activities) brought war and terror to the globe merely because lobbyist politicans earned fortunes by influencing diplomacy and waging conflict

This is really scary to me because it looks very similar to what Hitler did to my country (Czechoslovakia in 1938) and you know, he invaded rest of country only few months later and there was fucking world war, he used our industry and weapons even against you. France and UK forced us give our land to Hitler in name of peace and it was obvious that he wanted much more, we can't make same mistake again and say "it's some country on the east, who cares...." Ukraine is maybe not industrial power like Czechoslovakia in 30s, bug there is still plenty of guns just lying on the ground, if Putin takes it, he can use it against us.

As an American, I would have to say our closest friend in Europe is britain, although we consider most of them friends. We tend to see Britain as kinda an individualist that likes to have its own identity, which is something we admire. Along with the fact we share a language. We like Germany and France a lot too, but it seems too much like they’re trying to fight us on things which to their credit may or may not be the right thing, but conflict is there nonetheless. Along with that culturally we look at Germany, France, Italy, and basically everywhere else an a cool separate culture, but Britain is very similar to us and we feel they share alot of the same problems we do. There’s also things like the royal family which Americans still like to talk about, and we share alot of music. It’s not uncommon to find out something you enjoy is British, although we do love Ireland and many Americans think very black and white about geopolitics, so you can see where that leads to. Along with that, we love to make fun of the British, but I’m sure that’s mutual.

Heres the problem with "just avoid the war by declaring legally that Ukraine cant join NATO" the second that happens Russia also declares war and imvades Ukraine. Its a catch 22, Russia wants ukraine and its not gonna stop till it gets it, no matter the events its inevitable, the only thing that stops that would be ukraine being made a nato member in which case it cant happen.

You know who also wants Ukraine? The eu/nato. Would usa allow cuban missiles? No? Then why would russia allow nato to occupy a border state. Why would they allow the crimea to fall in nato hands. Hmm? The problem is the expansion of the eu/nato towards the east: all the way to stalingrad. Russia wants to keep the buffer state. Remember operation barbarossa? the invasion of russia was held at where the eu now wants to START. It would be foolish of the russians to allow that. The eu should keep its promise, they made after the fall of the berlin wall: no expansion towards russia. They did anyway. ALL the way up to the actual border of russia.

Why do you think the Soviet leadership would even create a Ukrainian Soviet republic with those borders if the eastern and southern parts were effectively russian? Due to some historical Ukrainian state? There was none, only the principality of Kiev, and a couple other principalities, and earlier Kievan Rus'. It's actually funny how Russia's antagonism towards Ukraine helped them solidify into a distinct people group in the modern era, good job. A Luhansk guy is here You made a mistake. "People speak Russian" doesn't mean "They are Russians". I speak Russian, but I'm a Ukrainian. Irish mostly speak English, but they are not English, they are still Irish. That's putin's narrative: they speak Russian = they are Russians = I have rights to claim their territory. Don't help him in his propaganda, please. So, how it happened. Words of my grandfather who was born in 1930: "Everyone spoke Ukrainian that time. We could understand Russian, but not many people could speak it. After the famine (artificial famine made by Stalin which killed millions of Ukrainians) the government started to send some Russians and other nationalities of Soviet union to our region. They lived in houses of Ukrainians who died of hunger. We played with Russian kids, they quickly switched into Ukrainian or at least used Ukrainian words for things they saw around. Then more Russians came. Then more. All school education switched into Russian. If you wanted to work for a government or be a teacher or any other not-agricultural-job you had to speak Russian. After WW2 more Russians came to our industrial cities. Year by year all Donbas cities and towns started to speak Russian. Including my grandfather. The countryside spoke Ukrainian. Then it also changed. But many old people in villages still speak Ukrainian.

No, it's actually not a similar relationship at all. Just think, how badly would Canadians have to be treated so that, when given a chance, they would do everything to get as far away as possible from the US? You see, the US state never killed generations of Canadians, didn't try to erase their language and culture, didn't orchestrate man-made famines. Drawing such comparisons is misleading as it ignores decades of atrocities that were carried out by Russian "brothers"
@ECFOX909
@ECFOX909 2 жыл бұрын
Yes there are differences in the relationships, I know the Holodomor happened, the policy of Russification in its territory starting with Peter the great, the Russian colonization after the fall of the Crimean khanate that used to rule in the area and subsequent waves of Russians trying to colonize and cement that claim. But it’s the closest relationship that I can think of that is comparable to it in most aspects. Of course it’s reductionist it’s similar but not a 1:1 comparison, that’s impossible. But I would say yes you can make the argument that the 2 relationships are comparable to some degree as there was years of negative bad blood between America and Canada. Canadians or British at the time for years pressed American sailors and American men into the British army and navy, the countless border conflicts and skirmishes, the years of killing each other in the west to secure true dominance of the region. Im sorry but what do you mean about either side not trying to wipe out/erase each other that’s just flat fucking false, the Americans tried to wipe us out several times, tried to annex us and remove our way of life and government from our continent, the American invasion during the revolution, Americans going north to stir rebellion to then have us annexed like they did to Hawaii or Texas, the war of 1812, or manifest destiny, it wasn’t just against Mexico or Latin American countries, They never tried to kill our language as it was the same as theirs granted but our culture yeah they tried that as did we them they were rebels we were loyalists we hated each other. I will reiterate that I never suggested it was the exact same 1:1 but fact of the matter is Russian and Ukrainian have a common origin with the same Viking ruling class of the rus that unified them with the rurkid dynasty, they had the same proto-Slavic which started to differentiate into the modern languages and not to mention the years they spent as principalities with Russians and Ruthenians or Ukrainians living all across rus territory, the years of mongol oppression, the foundation of the Slavonic Orthodox Church which culturally is deeply intertwined in both and helped found the Russian and Ukrainian identities. As a comparable the amount of bad blood between them there is comparison to be made to that of Canada and America as both relationships had years upon years of violence and animosity towards each other, a very similar culture coming from a common origin, a founding story that each other are a part of. But since they aren’t the same countries with the same regional histories there are differences, there were no artificial famines, years of American or Canadian oppression for sure which granted is a big difference. But as an insight for a foreigner who is not versed in the nuances of the full history and situation. I think it’s an apt starting point to forming an understanding of the deep and interesting relationship that not many outside the region know.

@@quakeknight9680 yes, but as ot was monarchy, the inheritance of it follows royal rules. Muscovites, current Russia, didn't inherit any claim to royal throne of Kievan Rus, instead they broke away and claimed loyalty to invading Mongols. The Kievan Throne after the disintegration of royal bloodline of Kiev also pretty much disintegrated as Kievan Rus fell apart, but amongst many regions gaining independence due to the event, such as Novogrod or Minsk, Red Ruthenia was actually inherited by Polish Throne, while main crown of Kievan Rus stayed with inheritors of Kiev. Then Kiev, Minsk and other small remnants of Kievan Rus signed their fielty to Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which in time integrated them into Lithuania. Then Lithuania signed over lands of modern Ukraine to Polish Crown. And finally in 1920s during Polish-Soviet War Poland recognized Ukraine and it's capital as Kiev as independent nation with its roots in Kievan Rus history. Therefore it's Ukraine that is lawful inheritor of Kievan Rus history and even if we somehow claim that this isn't valid, then Poland and Lithuania are in the line for the claim before Russia is. So Russia has no grounds to claim Ukraine other than right of conquest. Which you loose when you loose your conquest, ie. country starts to self-govern without asking you just as Ukraine did.

They are the ones who gave up their empire when they couldn't sustain it any longer and now they are trying to expand back into those areas of their old empire. I'm not making a statement on what happened there, their right or lack thereof , but it is important to understand that from the Kremlins perspective, the precedent for what they are doing right now, has already been set in 2008, and recognized by most of the western world. Funnily enough the at the time actually democratic government of Serbia warned of these very tactics, there is a rather sobering address at the UN by the then Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs. It outlined some of the problems that seem to be proliferating. Unfortunately this will pass, so what is next? Moldova? Catalonia? Northern Ireland? Scotland? @@neventomicic330 It's not about who did what to whom. Honestly I am a Serb, but I've tried to accept the horrors that went on, and by my own example show the world that those atrocities were committed by monsters. On every side. To show the patriots of my country that the people who adorned themselves with the two headed eagle and slaughtered innocents are not Heroes, but traitors usurping the history of our nation and the symbolism of our struggle for independence. If you hit me, then I hit you back, then your son strikes me , then my son strikes him... It gets us nowhere. Justice is not about retaliation, it is about justice appropriately trying people for the crimes they have committed and administering punishment. And just about every single commander or official involved in that was extradited and faced trial. Many were convicted some were not. Operation "Storm" (Oluja) is celebrated as a Holiday in Croatia. To half a million people it is in fact the day they were forced to leave their homes. It isn't about trying to paint history in one light or another, or to point fingers that... you did this because they did that. The fact of the matter stands, that purely, observing the legal framework that governs international relations, Kosovo's proclamation of independence was illegal. I'd say I represent many , many people in Serbia ages 20-40, that have no quarrel with Kosovars. Personally? I believe that the people of a nation should have a right to self governance, I believe in libertarianism(personally) in minimal government intrusions and the rights of individuals to self determination. I really, truly do respect the desire of the People of Kosovo to live in a separate state. It's not a cop out. If we preserve the historical monuments and open the two nations towards each other than these very same issues will stop self perpetuating. If I were to look at the situation through the lens of history I could make two dozen claims about how and why the demographics shifted etc etc etc... But it is ultimately unproductive and irrelevant. The reality on the ground is that they wish independence, and I believe they should have the right to do so. And would even argue that, had it come without the violence both nations would be far more prosperous today. Ultimately I refuse to be a slave to the hatreds of previous generations. My great grandfather fought alongside the French and the Russians, his son at the side of Americans and the British, his sons still against them.... The Balkans are a complicated subject but only really due to recent history(20Th century), and the "Land of Blood and Honey" which the name implies, contrary to popular belief doesn't stem from a warlike past, but rather the Ottoman difficulties in subduing the populations. In truth, the genetic studies of the area show that we really are incredibly homogenous people, and barring what i like to call the "Dereticization"(A dumbass Serbian quasi historian) of history we have lived side by side and assisted one another numerous times. Croats, Albanians, Bosnian Dukes.... all fought on KOSOVO... Against the Ottomans, side by side as the Croat nobility even managed to employ the assistance of the Knights hospitaler. Many unbiased records exist, Yes the Serbs made up the majority of the military but it was a joint effort. For over a thousand years we co existed and shared in our strife and struggles, Our kings married one another, our people traded with each other. We clashed as every nation did, but the French and the British have a far more deeply rooted history of Antagonism than we do. Sadly the 90's gave rise to prominent figures like Arkan, Thompson, Tudjman, Thaci(Who is actually on trial for war crimes now at long last). And people seem to have internalized these division very deeply. That being said, most normal folks really, simply don't have the energy, I'm 35 years old, and when I look back all I can see is ruination of all of our countries. They robbed us of our childhoods, our formative and teenage years were spent in the Armies of our countries uneasily watching 70 years of repression unravel. Today most of us aren't keen to sacrifice the childhoods of our children for the very same barbaric idealisms. Yes there are still idiots, but there are dumbasses in DC/London/Berlin... wherever you go. For reference, a mural of Ratko Mladic(A Bosnian Serb war criminal) was recently painted on a building in a residential part of Belgrade. The locals unanimously condemned, protested and campaigned to have it removed. It shows you the real, national sentiment... we are tired of it... we've all gone hungry, without electricity, we've all had to explain to our kids that they can't have that toy... or that TV... or that game console what have you, and no one is keen to go back to it. The topic of Kosovo is taboo in Serbian politics, as 13 years later we are yet to have a public debate or god forbid a referendum. It is a card used to appeal to the nationalistic voters. For reference... every time you hear about any issues in Kosovo, just do a google check and you will see, it coincides with Elections in Serbia/Albania or on Kosovo :D Think about it, in the Balkans it's "Ustaso!" "Cedo!" "Poturice" etc... but when a Serb and a Croat meet in Germany or the states its "My Bro!" "Ah we're the same shit you and I".... Even at that point, I would meet people - who would make assumptions about me, because I was from a Western country - who said they (as Serbs) resented being painted as the "bad guy" in the Western press (truly, Croatian & Bosniak atrocities were reported less often), but, at the same time, see that some of these same people really revelled in playing the role of the bad guy; making attempts to intimidate or provoke me, but not in a truly serious way. Even then (circa 2005), when my Icelandic friend and his Serbian wife went on their honeymoon, to Dubrovnik, she encountered some antagonistic behaviour from locals. It's good to hear that, in your experience, intra-Yugoslav interactions are generally far more harmonious now. However, you will have a generation of people, out in the diaspora - especially among war refugees - who will hold onto that resentment or hatred, because of terrible things that happened to them, or that they witnessed. I have a Bosniak friend, in Edinburgh, who never wants to hear a word about my travel to Yugoslavia, simply because I had only visited Belgrade, and the last place he lived before moving to Scotland was a transit camp, in the middle of the war. I don't know what can be done for these people - to heal them - if anything, at all. I've encouraged him to get his Scottish-raised kids fully registered with Bosnian citizenship and passports, so they might travel there - maybe stay and work for a summer - so that they can get to know the place in this new, peaceful era.

Thanks for the analysis. I'd never tried to look at the situation from Putin's perspective before. There are, however, two points I disagree with. 1. Just because the majority of the populations of the regions in question are ethnically Russian, that doesn't give Russia right to the land. Putin can always give the people Russian citizenship and let them live in Russia if they want to, like the UK offered Hong Kongers UK citizenship last year in response to their crisis with China. That doesn't require an invasion. Imagine if a load of ethnically French Brits lived on the Isle of Weight, and they held a referendum that they wanted to join France. Would that give France the right to invade the Isle of Weight? As far as international law is concerned, I don't know, but it doesn't feel right. If they want to be independent states, and can reasonably sustain themselves independently, then fine. But declaring independence solely to join another state, seems wrong. 2. The example of various US states breaking away to join other countries doesn't quite work if you're comparing it to formet USSR countries joining NATO, as NATO isn't a country, but a security alliance, formed (as far as I understand) to protect its members from Russian aggression. Russia threatening Ukraine not to join NATO sounds like a burglar threatening somebody not to buy home security.
@basedstreamingatcozy-dot-t7126
@basedstreamingatcozy-dot-t7126 2 жыл бұрын
1. If the UK mistreated those french people on the isle of weight, and those frenchmen rose up in arms against them, then yes, France would be justified in going in there to protect their people. 2. You're forgetting that it's not just a security alliance, America puts missiles and military bases in those countries. Missiles right next to your borders is what cause the cuban missile crisis.
@Pining_for_the_fjords
@Pining_for_the_fjords 2 жыл бұрын
@@basedstreamingatcozy-dot-t7126 How are the people of Donetsk and Donbas being mistreated by Ukraine? I've heard that line a lot from Putin, but haven't heard of any actual examples. Anyway your response is a but late, as Putin has shown that his invasion of these two cities was a pretext to invad the entire country, negating any narrative of "peacekeeping" he made at first. Russia is now the enemy of the world. The invasion that began yesterday will be compared to the invasion of Poland in 1939, and being a Russian sympathiser will carry the same stigma as being a nazi sympathiser. Think carefully before taking sides in this futile conflict.
@jackattack9678
@jackattack9678 2 жыл бұрын
@@Pining_for_the_fjords @Pining for the fjords I believe Putin repeats that line because Ukraine has refused to give in to the Russian separatists who declared independence, and instead of diplomatically resolving the issue, Ukraine sent in their army and pro-government militias to fight the separatists. Ukraine's government killed over 7,000 of its citizens who wished to be independent and injured many thousands more, as well as launching missiles and mines into residential areas killing civilians. Of the 1.4 million civilians who fled the territories over the last 8 years, the majority moved to Russia to escape persecution from Ukraine. The fact that 2.7 of the 3 million inhabitants who stayed in the area chose to live in the Separatist-held regions, despite the threat of attack from Ukraine instead of fleeing into Ukrainian-held territory speaks volumes. Is Putin using this real fact as an excuse to invade the rest of Ukraine? - yes, but that wasn't what you asked. According to Russia, the invasion is to end Ukraine's military attacks against its separatist population and force them to recognize independence. We shall see if that is another excuse or if they hold true to their word.

Yeah there are a lot of territory that is effectively controlled and administered by Russia but not "technically" their territory or recognized as such by all nations. Kuril Islands in Japan was taken in WW2 for no real reason and not given back to Japan, with the justification that the two states are still "technically at war" even today, even though it's been over 70 years since any actual fighting between the two nations, and it being obvious Japan would not wish to provoke an attack today. But as Russia can flex it's muscles they are allowed to keep their side of the lunchtable they stole without anyone daring to voice back at it.

@@PeoplecallmeLucifer If the question was, "For what strategic reason might Russia occupy the Kuril Islands?", your answer is absolutely correct. However, my impression was @Norwegianboy EE was looking for a legal or historical reason. On that front, since the early 19th century, each country exercised control over varying proportions of the island chain - all the way from Hokkaido to Kamchatka - depending on how their most recent conflict ended, and the treaty that followed it. The same back-and-forth dynamic was played out over the much larger island of Sakhalin. 1905 was particularly embarrassing for Russian naval power. Forty years later, when Japan's surrender to the Allies (of which the USSR was a member) signalled the end of the Second World War, the Soviet Union controlled all of the Kuril Islands, except for the four closest to Japan (populated with Japanese). So, the USSR wasn't closed-off from the Pacific at the time the Japanese laid down arms, but the Soviets attacked and occupied these last four islands anyway, deporting the surviving residents a couple of years later.
