The reason austria is not part of NATO is not necessarily because we don't want to, but because we are legally not allowed to. The 1955 Austrian State Treaty, which made austria a sovereign country after the war and made the winning powers remove their occupation of austria, prohibits the reunification with germany and some other points, like ban of fascist organizations and such. The soviet union would only agree to the treaty, if austria would stay neutral afterwards. So after the treaty the austrian state made neutrality part of the constitution. We are prohibited to join a military alliance by our own laws.

Aid is still pretty important to Ukraine. Their problem is keeping their weapons loaded and supplies full. The EU and the UN supplying them is enough to keep them alive for weeks whilst securing whatever's left of global peace. However, Ukraine ultimately does not want to fight a war forever, and so they're taking every avenue to end war with Russia whilst remaining independent. 17:23 way to make an unbiased statement. Socialism is democratic in nature. Much more so than capitalism. I see no democracy in the class system set up. Liberal democracy is a step in the right direction but it’s not enough. The upper class still is in power dictating the lower class from their lavish palaces. Russia is a capitalistic class system, representing the far less liberal side of capitalism. Russia is capitalism without liberal democracy. If you value freedom so much, free the people. The current system is but a tribute to the capitalists, keeping our unrest at bay and keeping them in power longer.

I think sanctions in general are a blunt instrument, but in the specific case of Russia they might be quite effective. Putin's oligarchy has stashed much of its ill-gotten gains in the west, so those guys are *very* vulnerable to stuff like asset freezes etc. Ideally we can hurt the plutocrats heavily while the impact on ordinary Russians remains light. Even reports of 15% fall in Russian GDP make me wonder whether that's really a 15% fall in living standards for ordinary people, or whether those losses are heavily concentrated among Russia's elite.

@arianmartic79652 жыл бұрын

@REDnBLACKnRED2 жыл бұрын
Politics does not work on emotions. You can't weaken and hurt the EU's future simply because adding Ukraine in this moment sends a message of solidarity. Poland and Hungary, fully integrated members, have been a headache to the EU because they don't ideologically align with 'western values'. Greece, a country whose economy is slumbering is barely able to recover under the weight of the Euro. Then there are all the countries that have applied to the in the EU and are in the process of aligning legally with EU regulations, which takes lots of negotiations. You can't simply add a country and call it day. There is a reason that certain requirements have been laid out for EU membership, requirements that Ukraine barely met before the war, and certainly does not meet now. It will destabilise an already hurting EU after Brexit and Merkle stepping down in Germany. It is of course most advantageous for Ukraine to appeal to the emotions at this moment and ask for this, and of course if circumstances were favourable the EU would have no problem at all, but that is far from reality. What the EU can do, and is doing, is showing support though aid, military equipment, refugee support, and solidarity.
@skylarkesselring60752 жыл бұрын
Terrible idea, honestly terrible. Also what does it matter, you think EU countries will come fight Russia in Ukraine? Nearly every EU country is also in NATO, meaning they aren't gonna fight Russia. Ukraine is certainly much different than the image you've created in your mind, which shows the danger of randomly latching onto a topic because it's in the news and immediately coming to broad/sweeping conclusions. Parts of Ukraine align more with the EU while others with russia, but more importantly, what are "European" values? Considering only EU nations, do you think Germany, Bulgaria, Poland, and Greece share the same values?

I think what Ukraine was and is doing is very smart. They are actually marketing their situation! Especially with the president. I believe a lot of fast responses and sympathy came directly from social media. This made the world look even faster ans especially look inside the situation and made it even more personal. Now it's like a movement, everbody wants to be a part of. I'm wondering if this was one of the presidents ideas, like intentionally, because he used to be a comedian.

I think any modern war would go like this. Unfortunately the wars in the Middle East were fought in countries with no basic infrastructure and no western interest or sympathy. This is the first war that meets both those criteria.

@@uranusneptun5239 But it really isn't. Ultimately it is about one power trying to hold on to its power in a world that is increasingly turning against it (Russian perspective). Looking at it from that lens, it is literally half of the wars in history.

15:25 I've always understood it as making the cost of war much higher than just military losses. If we could make Putin sleep on tacks and legos we'd do that too. And we don't think that'd make the people more likely to overthrow the government.

I have no interest whatsoever in your MineCraft content, even though I used to play the game a lot, but I do like this channel :). Finland has a history of being invaded by Russia and share a long border with them, so naturally they feel insecure with the bear prancing. And Sweden holds a key island, Gotland, that could allow to project hard power, which is Russia's style, over the Baltic. Especially with Kaliningrad, it would allow them to completely encircle and disarm the Baltic States. Also, Russia has historically had bad access to open seas.

What is stopping the entire eu from doing a mass blanket of embargo on food, if we stop food going into russia (russia has like 4% farmable land) and say, if you support russia you to will get the same food embargo?
@stafer32 жыл бұрын
Russia is food exporter. They produce more food than they consume. It will actually be other way around, since both Ukraine and Russia combined make like 29% of world's wheat exports, this war can disrupt pretty big chunk of food production from world's market. So you can expect higher prices of food, and those who are from poor countries, maybe even starvation.

I can tell you this those dollar numbers for each EU country doesn't tell the whole story. How many people in Switzerland or Germany or France make closer to Ukraine's number. In Canada I can tell you that I make less then 20000 a year. Plus people who make absurd amount of money upwards to billions of dollars. Alls it really means is the average Ukrainian makes that amount of money. Many people make less and very few make way more.

If they could take back Crimea, then they would have access to their offshore oil reserves again that Ukraine was developing at great expense before the Russian invasion in 2014. Since then, they have had to spend a significant amount on Defense, which has further limited their economic activity, so if they were able to shake Russia off and reclaim Crimea, they might be able to get up to Poland's level at least in a decade or so.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is complex. Very large oil and gas deposits were discovered in Ukraine back in 2012. Most of these were off the Chimea Coast, and in the East of the country. Oil and Gas sales to Europe are where Russia gets a lot of its money. If Ukraine were able to tap into its own natural resources and join the EU, it would drastically damage the money coming into Russia from Europe. Also Russia has seen former bloc countries leave and join NATO. From their view point, NATO are practically at their doorstep. If Ukraine did join NATO it would mean that Belarus is virtually surrounded be NATO countries. The Russian leadership are deeply paranoid so to them these are grave concerns. Then we have to factor in that what is Russian culture and identity, historically started in what is now Ukraine. Trouble is Ukraine is now a sovereign country, Russia has no claim to it, it to the Russian leadership they see it as part of them that has got lost and needs to be brought back into the fold. Going forward, I don't see how this can be resolved peacefully, Russia has chosen aggression... the sanctions might make Russia more desperate and reckless. This could very well be the start of World War 3.
