Served in Germany in the 1990's right after the Berlin wall fell ('89) and Russia imploded for a bit before Putin took over in 2000. It was the Wild West for spy activity from Russia, to East Germany, to many parts of Europe in that short time. Kinda sad how getting the word out about Havana Syndrome was entirely the work of the affected individuals, while even their own hierarchy tried to gaslight and shut them up. Even saying it was “classified” to talk about what happened, while at the same time saying it hadn’t happened.
@brunsy1990Күн бұрын
That is standard fare when there are ongoing investigations or operations though. And may well be more a case of obfuscating what specifically is known and understood. As frankly if the US were to come and say 'yup, it was Russia, we know exactly how it was done, who it was done by and have already used an adjacent technology to cause them to shit themselves in the middle of their debriefing' Then that would tip our hand on the extent of both US intelligence reach, and our technological capability in the field of DE weapons. (note, the above scenario is to my knowledge fiction, yet a known symptom of exposure to a certain range of infrasound vibrations)
@TheSwegBucket19 сағат бұрын
Havana syndrome was a wide range of effects and couldn't be directly linked to any foreign individuals. It would have been hysteria to support the theory it was Russian attacks on U.S Personell without the proper evidence. I was in class with other infrastructure workers when we started feeling dizzy and sore. One day I came down off a ladder but the ground didn't stop moving for a few minutes. I've had headaches come and go ever since. I didn't hear about Havana syndrome until years later. Some of our instructors would go over seas to help build bases or relieve disaster areas. I guess they weren't kidding when they said it was the most hazardous job you could do. They might of been trying to get to someone else and apprentices just got in the way. They did do sloppy poison assassination jobs in the past with that hotel tea pot story. Hard to believe any of it. 20:10 'to collect intelligence from their computers and cellphones'. Well what were the odds our HTC phones got hacked in that class and some of us lost all our phone data. Maybe it had something to do with this. What a job... what a job. Greetings from Ukraine. few coments 1. appreciate your detailed and accessible explanation for the Western audiences that don't speak Ukrainian or Russian. 2. this is not a "secretive" unit anymore because russian journalist broke stories on this ages ago. There's a really interesting point about how standard journalists managed to uncover and connect some of the links - russian military literally rents apartments for their top agents next to the building where they work. Journalists bought the official russian drivers database for like 10$, which contained all names, plates and so on. They connected the plate numbers to people, people to the building, building to the GRU unit, GRU unit connections by linking names+plates to vkontakte social network. Best part about russia, you can buy anything. Another thing that's good about this video, it clearly shows that while US might want to isolate itself, the russians are actually waging a 24/7 war on US already. Assassinations, political interference, bribery, espionage, industrial sabotage, direct military action, attacks on allies, james bond like poisonings and testing of high end military tech. It's all happening today. Russians basically behave like standard thugs, they will press you as far as they can. if you don't stop them, they're going to press harder and deeper. US behaves like a *itch for the past 20 years & russians are using this to the full extend. By the way, it got so bad that Microsoft and top US banks are begging Senate to take actions on russian sponsored cyber crime groups/threats, but the government is mostly drinking kool-aid here. Finally, its showing that unlike EU/US, the russians never stopped their cold-war era operations. While EU/US have some sort of changes in political direction, the russian government operates pretty much as it did back in 1930s. Their chief intelligence agency hasn't moved from their original building for more than a 100 years now, it basically has the same principles, and still considers US its primary adversary. I'm really clueless to how US is sleeping on this one, but I'm pretty sure that one of the next cyber attacks on US grid, oil, military, or banking sector will provide a solid wake-up call.
@BSGDiscerp13 сағат бұрын
Cold War era operations never stopped on either side. The US isn't sleeping on Russia (or China) either. The US deploys a ton of honeypots to pull threat actor resources away from targets that matter and use a lot of subtlety in target hardening and attack surface reduction. If an adversary believes they've taken down a system or disrupted it, when in reality it's only toggling power to a light bulb, they're less likely to expect that resource to be available and are more likely to become overconfident in their abilities which gives them two disadvantages for (essentially) free. Even better when the intent is known, and the effects can be replicated and controlled, so staging a believable reaction to the attempt to make sure that the watchers are satisfied.

I don't think they ever gave up, development continues a pace it's just a long and detailed process. You can see many recent developments, I'll be at incremental ones especially in Naval surface weapons. I think the idea that we are going to be able to shoot down missiles and fighter jets with lasers by the year 2000 turned out not to be quite feasible, but we are getting there. right now their utility is mostly in terms of dazzling or in terms of disrupting and potentially destroying slower moving cruise missiles and small drones. the energy density to Simply zap something within a couple seconds and blow it up isn't quite there yet but you can do a lot of damage to sensors and you can start fires if you contract something slow moving enough

I am Russian and defected from Russia when I was summoned to fight in Ukraine. Until 2012, Russia was relatively westernized. Putin was very pro-Western, a staunch supporter of liberal and democratic values. His first two terms were great. He lifted Russia out of poverty and attracted many investments from Western companies. The 2000s were the best years for Russia; it was part of the G8, an ally of the West, and the standard of living was increasing. In 2012, he decided to run for president for the third time without participating in debates, which was against the Russian constitution. He rigged the elections. Slowly, he started pushing anti-Western rhetoric and began cracking down on freedom of speech and democracy. After 2014, it became more apparent when he annexed Crimea. From that point, the standard of living in Russia began to deteriorate, and Putin became increasingly oppressive. Since 2022, things have only gotten worse. When I watch videos from Russia in the 2000s, I feel so nostalgic-it feels like a completely different world when Russia was an ally of the civilized world, and the standard of living was improving.
@atanasvasilev322821 сағат бұрын
Aint no such thing as civilised world you traitor rascal. Just rich and not rich. Selling your country for money is petty. Putin tried to be friends with the west, but he saw what rotten thieves they are! They will exploit you and always maximise their profits on your account. That is what they are doing to other countries non-stop.

People saying Russia is weak in the comments just show how ignorant they are. I know they are not as strong as the US but they are not weak either. So its best not to start war. Look up US Army Col.Douglas Macgregor talk about the Russian military. I know people will say i am a bot for not wanting to go to war but we need to be realistic. Alot of people on bothsides will die. Do your own research from unbias sources.
@thecringeinspector5636Күн бұрын
The problem is the fact that you apply a westerner's perspective on the whole issue - meanwhile it means something else to those who are on the front lines. The Ukrainians are fighting for their own nation that was attacked in an attempt to suppress their population to become another Russian puppet state like Belarus. For the Ukrainians, the stakes are a lot higher than just their own lives, its about fighting for a people and a nation that has the right to sovereignty and self-determination - the freedom to trade and align itself with the western world because its in their opinion the ethical and economically beneficial choice. We westerns already have all we need, we have our own governments, nations, identities, necessities and systems that provide for us but the Ukrainians are highly likely to lose all of that if they back down or give up, and I find it quite primitive to be calling for the war to stop purely because lives are being lost. Before any peace deal is made, it must be made on terms that are fair to Ukraine and its people - and that the people and government of UA agree with.
@cisarovnajosefina4525Күн бұрын
Russian military is going full force against a semi-modern military and are slow to advance. Just one nato division would stop the russian advance. If nato gathered in Poland and then went into Ukraine they could push the Russians out. Just using the airforce they could stop any russian close air support and do bombing of their own. Their army could never defeat nato. They aren't the Soviet Union. They can't even quickly defeat a former member of the Soviet Union.
