Family matters. We also wanted our son to explore his roots during his gap year.

We pondered a lot whether to go and finally bit the bullet. It turned out to be a unique experience. With few foreign tourists, center city didn't feel like a tourist trap it used to be, and we enjoyed authentic Russian city. We were able to visit many places including Mariinsky Theatre, Hermitage Museum, Petrodvorets Palace, and the Kremlin museums without booking months in advance and endless lines. It was still busy with many Russians traveling in the country in lieu of going abroad, but not as busy as it would have been otherwise. Our son speaks Russian with an accent and was often asked were he was from. He always introduced himself as an American, and was invariably received with warmth and curiosity.
