Since I live here in Russia now, my wife and I celebrate both dates. Although really in January is the main holidays in Russia. Also on the 31st December as well, we all wait for the chimes on Red Square at 12am.

The Moscow Times this afternoon reports that the Russian Central Bank has suspended trading foreign currency in an attempt to slow the ruble crashing. It's trading at 113 to the US dollar. 😮

Это называется Рождественское ралли. Каждый год перед НГ доллар ползет вверх, крупные компании торгующие в валюте закрывают долги перед бюджетом, потом через пару недель после НГ опять опускается. Можете проверить - это ежегодное явление.
