The small shops in "rynok" markets are not only more friendly, but you can also find some products there that you cannot find (for any reasonable price at least) in chain supermarkets. Everything is lower in Russia including salaries, pensions and prices. If your income is $20K/year the grocery prices aren't great. The Moscow & St. Petersburg areas are well off but most of Russia is poor and its getting worse. There's 9% inflation (we complain about 2.5% in US) and interest rates >17% (4.5% in US). The ruble exchange rate has gone from ~75 = $1 to ~95 = $1 so if a $1 item cost 75 rubles a year ago, now it costs 95 rubles.

Yes it’s pretty much like an Aldi. Truck to Shelf stocking to keep labor to minimum which in turn keeps price low. Not sure of overall ‘quality’ of the food. Usually items that are cheap priced are also cheap quality. But I’m sure you can find some things in there that won’t kill you over time due to it being crap. Now the one place that has smaller shops that are independent owned… yeah we have those too here in the USA. I know you’ve shown other videos with similar small owner shops under one large roof

At fruit shops I sometimes got some fruits for free (like, the seller had to corner me lol) I got some strawberries that way, half was bad but half was good lol it was literally forced into my hands and I didn't pay anything so I don't complain lol

All those same Oreo biscuits and chocolate bars from western brands cost double or triple price in London. The real cost of manufacturing those bars must be pennies if they can sell them for a dollar and still make profit both for the retailer and the factory that makes them. LOL Just imagine what kind of mark-ups they are raking in places like London. Yes, you are right the store looks similar to Aldi, but prices in Aldi in London are much higher. In this store I can see everything is less than a dollar except meat which is just over a dollar. Such prices simply don't exist in London.

@NogiVrotov He doesn't talk about salaries, true, but he should. The purchase power in London is considerably higher but so are the costs, such as logistics, lease of the premises, labour, taxes, etc. All of them are factored into the pricing in London, it's not just the direct costs of producing the humble bisquit. I cannot verify if the quoted price of Oreo biscuits is correct as I don't buy/consume mass-produced confectionary. However, there are always the ways to buy these kinds of products cheaper in London, e.g. in Poundland (it no longer lives up to its name but the stuff is still considerably cheaper there than the average supermarket). Besides, Albion here frequently posts biased and untrue comments where it comes to London stores and food, hence I wanted to bring some perspective. PS. I'm not saying London is not expensive, by the way, because it is, eye-wateringly so! It's just that one has to compare like with like. I used to go almost weekly to France and would bring back, among other things, some wine. The identical bottle at the now closed Nicolas wine stores in London would be some £8 more. Some of it would be profit, sure, but the bulk was actually tax. That's why a lot of Brits in Kent used to drive across the channel to do their grocery shopping in France.

@@TravellingwithRussell I live in Russia, in particular in Moscow. You can look at the vacancies of a sales clerk, a sales floor employee, a storekeeper. I went for interviews and everyone offered a job from 12h to 15h. 15 hours of work is given by DIKSI (Дикси), MAGNIT (Магнит), LENTA (Лента) and other retail stores, you have to come from 7-40 in the morning and work until 23-20, but they give 2 hours break, but there is practically no such break, because there are not enough workers and you constantly have to lay out goods, be at the checkout, take goods to the store. I worked in such conditions, and yes, I worked in Holland and the difference is noticeable, 8 hours of work versus 12-15. And because of such low wages, such cheap food prices. You may simply not have been aware of such working conditions. You can read articles on the Internet about working in Russia, ask Russian people about such working conditions, watch videos on youtube channel "Жизнь анонима", the last video (if you have translate from russia to en (working in yandex browser translate)) and others videos

This store really focuses on the supermarket side of things though. In Russia there are other places more like Dollar General, with more of a variety selection.
