It brought tears to my eyes. I remembered my father singing some of these carols by himself, with my mother and I listening , while living under the oppressive communist regime of Romania .

I am an Eastern Orthodox Christian and I don't understand the church Slavonic either, but everything I hear the choir sing their hymns, I feel closer to God. It is a beautiful feeling to have.💒☦

Yes, it is. They do not use musical instruments because it is forbidden in the church. They want the voice and music to be heard, not the instruments. It is very pure.

A Russian Christmas must have been such a big change for Alexandra. Different date, music, language and traditions than her youth.

Question: a lot of western music associates minor keys with sadness or solemnity. Is there a significance in these being in minor keys?
@mmartin74833 жыл бұрын
I associate the sadness to the killing of the joyful baby Jesus when he was an adult.

All the carols are Ukrainian and not Russian.

They sing in Ukrainian. The lyrics are below

January 2017, the cathedral would have either been taken over by the officially recognized Ukrainian Orthodox church contrived the regime in Kiev, or shut down recently by the Zelensky regime more recently, after 1,000 years of a common religious tradition. How unfathomably sad the beauty of this singing feels to me knowing this.
