What is свой? It can translate as 'my,' 'your,' 'his,' 'her,' 'our,' or 'their'... In this video we'll clear up when to use this very common word, and how it can be clearer than English 'his/her/their.' We'll cover some subtleties about its usage so you can avoid common mistakes, and touch on when you probably don't need to use any possessive at all.

This concept of self-reflectivity exist in Danish as well (but only in the third person singular masculine - sin vs hans). At the time, i received an explanation like this - The man's friend is dancing with "his" wife. In Russian and in Danish you would have no doubts whose wife it is.

The last part about чужой was really interesting, I didn't have a clear grasp of using свой for that! For 3rd person we have the equivalent of свой in Swedish, but not for 1st and 2nd person, so using it instead of мой (or just having it sound natural) took longer for me to get used to.
