This reminds me of when I pissed of a bunch of D&D nerds by pointing out how, with amount of institutional magic in the setting, there should have been an industrial revolution long ago. Could not get them to understand that "science" isn't some counterpart to magic, it is a process of study. And if magic exists in a setting it can be studied scientifically. And once studied and understood, applied. And applied magic, is technology. (the "seeing stone" equivalent I'm typing this on runs on tamed lightening, how is that not magic.)

Just a couple minor things. If you check WWII uniform setups, they always kept their gas mask in a canister or bag. This is because you don't want to drag it through the mud you're crawling in, then strap it to your face. The other thing is the thigh plates. Either they should be a bit loose and hang to the side, or they should hang in front and hinge the same direction your thigh does when you walk or run. In between they would resist normal leg movement and flap out to the side constantly. Hanging in front makes more sense if they are armor, hanging to the side makes more sense if they're storage.

This Project is amazing. The RAM-Soldier reminds me a lot of the "Sturmtruppen"-Stormtroopers of the first World War. They were heavily armored, and agressive breakthrough forces used by the German Kaiserreich.
@guy3nder529 Жыл бұрын
A comment about the armor lore: first thing is that the soldiers getting refurbished uniforms fits nicely with the used uniforms you're likely to get in reality, although in an industrial society refurbishing uniforms carries much less value. The second and more important point I have is about how the soldiers sometimes trade their uniforms, which doesn't really happen in real units. Gifting is much more prevelant, often times quite ceremoniously from the seniors to the juniors, and with seremonies differing from Corp, battalion, platoon etc. Your platoon is your family. You don't really do things foroyher people because of what you're gonna get in return, you do them because you go through so much shit with those people you're all bonded together.
@dylantrapp5629 Жыл бұрын
There were pointed face (bassinet) helmets in medeival times. Particularly used for jousting because they deflected lance blows to the face, so I could assume the idea could have been to deflect bullets too. Perhaps not as effectively as one might hope, but as an early idea by the people in this world, it may not be too farfetched. Since early gunpowder warfare in Europe, up to WWI, was all one big experiment of the effectiveness of guns in warfare, you could reason that pointy face helmets were a holdover from earlier mounted combat that gaveway to the trench warfare of the current state of things.

In worldbuilding i like to focus on the material side of the society, more specifically their technology and economy in addition to societal structure. For example i made a group of ratfolk called the skaliari (genetically engineered rat people) who are at a level of technology like that of 1870s-1900s europe, lots of steam, steel, primitive electricity, and heavy industry with almost all goods tranport being a mix of railed vehicles like urban freight trams or by bicycles using trailers. Like rats, they're society is incredibly collectivist and social, most food is eaten in massive mess halls, sleeping quarters are cozy and dense, and the stories-tall factories are teeming with workers.

I think the first design was pretty unique, the second one loses its Medieval references and now looks very much like a WW1 soldier. I think the shape and silhouette isn't Medieval enough. I can think of several ways to add more Medieval-ness to it: 1- the silhouette of different sorts of Medieval gear are distinct. You can go for something you already had in your initial drawings, which is the odd byut characteristic shape of Karsten-brust armour. 2- Fluting and other kind of shapes on the metal, like Maximillian Armour 3- Quilted and padded cloth as a way to signify sturdy, cheap protection and low rank soldiery. 4- Surcoat covering the armour (to protect it but also to signify troop and regiment). The war could have started with units displaying brightly colored heraldry, just like the French in WW1 started out with bright red panths and cap, but when it was clear that visibility was not good for survival, they shifted to light blue. In a similar way, the bright reds for infantry, blues for artillery and whites for cavalry could have given way to muted shades or black, fieldgrey and skyblue. Example for point 4: www.studio88.co.uk/acatalog/large_orig_book_bosworth_norfolk.jpg

Found you with the Dwarf redesign and I'm absolutely loving your content, really enjoy the general vibe, the painting and commenting without too much fuss or music. Your worldbuilding is genuinely cool and I'm curious to know more about the world you're creating. If I may be pedantic, there is one thing I noticed: the ogival rondel covering the right shoulder looks a bit out of place because it would mess with the soldier shouldering the musket, complicating recoil management and aim. It looks like the first thing the soldier would remove themselves. Alternatively, if the musket had a handgonne-styled stock that goes over the shoulder it would circumvent the problem.
@idkwhatmynameis53 Жыл бұрын
It’s unlikely you will see this but the trenches of ww1 were partially because of the artillery and machine guns of the time making it suicidal to not have them. So it would be cool to see sort of puckle/Gatling gun hybrids so fill that role of making the trenches more necessary if not just magic.
@itzaleaf405 Жыл бұрын
Another part of showing the face (imo) is since they're using firearms they would still need to be able to aim... so the old version's *massive* pointed faceplate would make it either near or straight impossible to actually properly aim in a way which would be even *remotely* comfortable or natural for a soldier. Which is a huge detail in designing equipment (in my opinion again), "Ergonomics" aka how comfortable and/or the equipment would be to use. Though looking at the design it looks fantastic to say the least! The only small possible thing would be the lack of gloves or hand protection, however due to them using flintlock firearms from the looks of it it's also understandable since reloading with gloves is *pain* when you have to do very precise things along with the gloves often getting caught on things.

Also, unless the muskets are designed to suit left-handedness in this world - the religious icon plate is on the wrong side, this positioning would make it difficult to shoulder the musket... unless it also has a utilitarian purpose as a shoulder rest/pad for a calibre that might be higher than what was tradionally used with muskets, in which case you would want it higher, more squared (likely smaller so as not to inhibit shoulder flexing and arm adduction motions) and curved inwards (concave) so as to have the butt of the weapon sit squarely in the shoulder without sliding around. All it woukd need is some sort of crank type system to engage the bullet to work, either by being belt fed or having some sort of Magazine. The magazine in my opinion should be placed on top of the gun, why? Because than you don't need a spring in the mag if you just let gravity do all the work.

Sorry if this is addressed in a later video or the concept is dropped entirely, but one potential material that could be used over the metal of the armour is lacquer. It's the glossy, coloured coating used to decorate and protect the underlying metal in Japanese armour. It was unavailable to pre-Modern Europeans, who would alternatively oil their steal plating to prevent it from tarnishing. Lacquer may have the same problem as paint, though, and its absence from Europe might prevent it from fitting the design you're going for, but it is a real-world solution to the problem of deteriorating armour so I thought I might as well draw your attention to it. As for music: Gregorian chant might fit the tone.

heres an idea thatll require you to triple the amount of designs, if youre unhappy with the mix of age of glory and the world war. remember that the technology of all the nations changed a LOT during the war, leave the early designs more decorative and colourful and the switch out the fancy coats and decorative hats for helmets, more protective clothing and more flexible pants. dont forget the officers and all the design choices that make them stand out to both the viewer and enemy sharpshooters
