I saw David play at Brassy's Nightclub in Cocoa Beach, FL shortly after his release from prison. His hair was still short and he had the beginnings of his famous mustache, but he didn't look very healthy. First thing I noticed walking in were signs posted everywhere saying,"please be quiet during David's acoustic set!" He came out and announced that he was going to bring the band out and get loud after a short set of wooden music. I was immediately impressed! His vocals and playing were spot on. Everything was going great until about 30 minutes or so into the acoustic set and one of my favorites, Guinnivere. When the song hit that pause between verses, some asshat yells, "ROCK ON!!!" Crosby just stopped, and I thought, "Crap! He's gonna throw a fit and walk off!" He just sat there, looking around at the audience, and after few moments, shook his head and said, "Surfers, Sailors, and Beach Bunnies! What did I expect! Let's get the band out here and play some rock & roll!" Well, I was kinda pissed that he didn't finish the "wooden" set, but the rest of the show was great and I knew that in a few months he'd be back playing with Stills & Nash in big arenas with high ticket prices.I got to see a very memorable show in a small venue for the cost of a $15 cover and a few beers!

I ran into David in 1984-5 in Mill Valley at a supermarket, he was panhandling and asked me for some spare change. He said he wasn't broke or anything, he just needed some change. A few weeks later I saw him in a one man show in San Francisco, in an after hours club on Broadway. A very small crowd was there in a very small place. When he started playing Wooden Ship, Paul Kantner came out of the audience and joined David on stage playing and singing the song. It was rock history and I didn't have my camera. David and Paul co-wrote Wooden Ships together. David was very very over weight, like 350lbs, and his breathing was really labored, like asthma, but his singing voice was still pure and smooth as silk. There had been an article written in the local newspapers that talked about his drug use and he talked about it. He denied it all. A few years later he got busted and went to prison. Maybe the best thing that happened to him, saved his life.

I had the pleasure of listening to David Crosby at the Reseda Country Club back in 1982. Roger McGwynne, who was with Crosby during The Byrds era, played as well but appeared separately on stage. David Crosby played great and still had a great voice that night, but the mic was picking wheezing sounds when he addressed us and I remember being concerned about his health or drug problems. I'm glad to see him still alive and even producing his LIGHTHOUSE album. He, along with Steven Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young were a big part of my high school and college years. Thanks a lot Guys!

When I was around 23 or 24 a friend of mine got tickets to see CSN at the Shoreline in Mountainview, CA around 1994 or 95(?) and I was all excited to go and they canceled because Crosby needed a liver transplant. Felt bummed but I'm just glad he's still around. I got into them when I was around 16 after finding a copy of Deja Vu in my step-dad's record collection and still blown away by Crosby's guitar tuning and playing on that album.

One difference between Stills and Crosby….Stills could actually play guitar even when he was drugged out…Crosby struggled even when he wasn’t…..

I am so glad I lived during these times ! People made a better effort to connect and share ! Not so stressful times ! We had a some better ways to release our daily stress ! And I think race was not a major issue then !Most hippies were cool people !

I was floored by the first CSN album. I tried to get my Gibson jazz guitar (Barney Kessel) to sound like Still's 1953 Tele (still the best use of the neck pickup in 'muffled' mode) and after that played only Telecasters (well maybe the occasional Strat).

Michael Finnegan got a great mention after his fantastic solo playing and singing on Barrel of Pain at this concert. It's posted on KZbin but his mention at the end unfortunately was cut out. His solo starts at about 4:45..

What drug-naive folks need to understand is that someone can be functional, or even exemplary, in certain areas of his/her life (e.g. musical performance and improvisation), and still be a drop dead junkie propped up on dope. If the addict keeps going full bore, the shit does eventually hit the fan. That happened to Crosby about a year after this concert, when coked out of his mind, he tried to pass through a TX airport with a loaded revolver and a briefcase full of assorted powders. Now that's reality.

Corsby LIVE between 1978 and 1985 was a very interesting ans strange experience....he sometimes would nod off right in the middle of a song.....some says he was high on Coke..others just weed..others a mix of things..check out his video frokm SanFrancisco 1979 (sometimes labeled as brooklyn College) but hhis eyes were closed the whole show..stil he managed to sing grewat songs...the Croz is like Keith richards...nothing stops him!

Ahhh yes! The great Joe Vitale, has always had a very musical drum kit. One of the best out there and still playing today even in his 70s with Joe Walsh as well as small bits with the Eagles.

I saw David touring with his own group in Minneapolis, late Seventies or early Eighties in a bar. He stood stock still, stage right, playing and singing (not very well) with a 1000 mile straight-ahead stare. You knew he was messed up.

What "dark side"? I didn't see any "dark side" on this video. I thought that they all sounded great ... except for all of the mix on Stills's guitar. Sounded like it had too much of some kind of pedal and/or chorus AND I LOVE STEPHEN STILLS! I grew up listened and learning form all of his albums He uses this mix a lot when playing electric. I'm not crazy about it but it's very easy to look past it when Stephen is playing and singing.
