Update It turned out great! Thanks so much! One thing I did differently was, instead of hanging it completely level, I dropped one side 1/2”. That way, it slowly self-closes when left open. It’s a closet door, so that little difference is really handy.

Do you have to add the board behind the rail or can you screw the rail onto the drywall and into the studs behind it ? What is the purpose of the board behind the rail ? I have seen video's and photos of both with that board and without so I know it can be done both ways .

It all depends on your setup. I needed a little extra space to clear the existing door trim and the screws weren’t going to hit studs so it added a little extra support. That being said, it’s not completely necessary and drywall anchors where you don’t hit studs are totally acceptable.

Hello Matt, Thank you for the video. I built the door back in march if this year and it really warped bad, aboit an inch at the top. Any advice on how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Oh no! That is a bummer and I've been there before too. You could try adding routing in C channel along the back, but if it's already warped, that might be difficult to do. The warping is caused by moisture fluctuations and the cut of the wood. Assuming you got the lumber from a big box store (like I did for this project), the wood from these places is never fully dry even if it says it was "kiln dried." That coupled with a lot of the boards coming from the center of the tree containing the pith of death. This is the most unstable part of the tree where most of the bending and twisting starts. If you end up going the route of rebuilding and you source your wood from the same place, make sure you look for the straightest quarter sawn boards you can find. Let the wood acclimate and dry out for a week or two before building. That will give you a better base for success with this or any other woodworking project you try in the future.

Nice tutorial and a great looking door... Instead of putting the final top stops in to discourage the door from popping off the rail (Which look totally out of place even behind the hanger) would it not have been easier to lower the baton that the rail is secured too and adjust the roller hanger height accordingly negating the requirement for those top stops?

that's what I went for, but you could go bigger...or smaller if you want some peaky gaps.

It was just an interior white paint. not sure of the exact shade of white. No conditioner used as I knew I'd be "weathering" it. Any blotchiness didn't really matter in this case.

Did you consider sloping the track slightly so that it would close on its own? I expect for some people that would be desired, but I wonder if maybe it would pick up too much speed and cause damage over time.

We keep the door open when it’s not in use so the slant wouldn’t work for that. You could certainly do that though. I doubt it would be subjected to more wear and tear than out two boys out this thing through.

It hasn't shrunk or warped. The light gaps you see in the video are still the light gaps you'd see today. The only things I would have done differently would be the stoppers up top being black and not white and water based poly instead of whatever kind I used. It yellowed on me...

I would say yes because if something gets on it, like a spill or small dirty handprints it makes it much easier to clean off. Just my opinion. I made this same door and have a granddaughter lol
