I just watched a video a lady did using the spray can method of this same product. She had the same problem of needing, in her case, 3 x the amount of product it said was required for the job. She also complained of the fumes and making her feel not well. At the end she said she wishes she had done the roll on application as you did, and I would agree because she had major dust issues with the spray cans. At the end she gave it a 2.5 at most 3 star rating. Your end result looks much better. Thank you for sharing!

I have seen the spray can method and thought that would have to be even worse when it came to the fumes, this way was bad enough! Lol Thanks, we are really happy with the results and would definitely do it again!

About to refinish our tub and the information especially about what happens if more than 2 coats is needed is very helpful. That is not something I believe I would have heard anywhere else so I'm glad you guys were able to talk to the company. I wrote down that special note about that. Haven't done the job yet and already thankful for that information. Like others I would like to hear an update in 6 months and then an update in a year to see how things are working out if you have time :-) Thank you AliciaLynn!

To anyone doing this, I would strongly recommend using a respirator!
@AliciaLynnYT4 жыл бұрын
Great idea! I wish I would have!
@johnnycoolguy95543 жыл бұрын
I want to add onto this. Not only should you use a respirator, you should use organic vapor cartridges, rather than the standard pink filters. Both the standard respirator filters and N95 masks will NOT protect you from the harmful vapors of the paint. N95 is designed to protect from airborne particles and infectious materials, and standard respirator filters only protect against particulate like dust or fiberglass insulation. Also, VENTILATE your work space. Do not forget this. Use a fan to push air out, and make sure there's both an inlet and an outlet for air. Don't keep your bathroom door closed and expect the fan to be able to move the air from the furthest point away. Bathroom fans will not provide adequate ventilation, do not rely on them. I made this mistake this past weekend. You might be able to get away with poor ventilation if you have the proper respirator and vice versa. But if you have extremely poor ventilation, and you have the wrong respirator, you will be inhaling a very unhealthy and harmful amount of chemical vapor that will give you respiratory irritation. Especially when you have to paint the floor of the tub. The vapors are heavier than air and will stay there until properly ventilated. I developed a cough, burning in my chest, and difficulty breathing almost immediately after I was done with the second coat. It's easily preventable, though. I was just underinformed.

I am not surprised it's strong smelling-- when dry it's expected to hold up to years of daily baths/showers, regular cleaning, etc. My question is whether -after it's dry and looking great- whether there is something you can put on like a 'clear coat' or a wax product like they put on school floors and strip off/reapply every summer. If I could protect this new finish and then only have to re-wax every few years, that would be great. @AliciaLynn I am looking forward to your six-month update, must be about due anytime??

Even if you end up spending a few hundred dollars on this stuff to do multiple coats, it's still going to be better than buying a new tub, considering everything is garbage made in china these days. In fact, when renovating it might be best to buy a real cast iron tub and refinish it with this product. Using a sprayer will get you the best finish if you know what you are doing and have the right equipment.

Thinking of doing this, love your final result. but just curious. I've watched another video of the process and he mentioned not rinsing after sanding only use the tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding. Could that be why you didn't get the results you were hoping for after your first and second coat. I know the box directions say rinse but I see you didn't mention rinse when you sanded again before your third coat and liked the result better. Could you please let me know your opinion I would love to avoid extra sanding and coating if I can.
@AliciaLynnYT3 жыл бұрын
Hi Diane, I personally think rinsing the surface that first time is really important to get the surface as clean as possible and therefore ready to take the product better. The less debris on the surface, the better the adherence of the paint. Rinsing the surface does the best job of that. I would have rinsed each time between coats if I could, but the paint has to cure before having water on it. Plus, I am just a stickler for following the instructions, I guess. Lol I have seen people on here do some interesting things with this product that I am sure Rustoleum would not recommend for best, long term results. I think if you follow Rustoleum's instructions, the product works great! I honestly just think the first box we used was defective in some way. I definitely noticed a difference in the two in what they looked like and how they applied. I have a feeling that first box got frozen or something and it compromised it. I hope that helps!

Hi there! I need to refinish my bathtub because the paint on the bottom of the tub is peeling off. Do you recommend to sand down the tub before painting and if so, which type/grit of sand paper would be best? Also, can I just paint the bottom of the tub, which is where the peeling is or do I need to paint the entire tub, including the outside of the tub. I'd assume I'd have to paint the entire tub because it wouldn't match if I only did the bottom? I've never done this before so please excuse me for the dumb questions. I'd like to do this myself since I don't want my landlord complaining about the peeling paint. Thank you for the helpful video! Looking forward to your reply.
@AliciaLynnYT Жыл бұрын
That sounds like the bottom would have to be completely stripped of paint first. Either by sanding or something else, like a chemical. And yes, you would want to do the whole tub so it matched. I'm not a professional and I didn't deal with peeling paint myself so I really don't know the best way to prep that. It depends on things like what your tub is made of etc. Rustoleum is really helpful when it comes to questions on the use of this product, I would recommend asking them what they would suggest.

@AliciaLynnYT26 күн бұрын
The product does start to harden after 6 hours because of the chemical reaction. Technically you could mix only half at a time, but the problem with that would be getting exactly half of each. One other thing to consider is that once it has been opened, I don't know whether or not the exposure to air affects it.

A few notes for people who don't have the near perfect set up, time allotment, and resources that the folks in this video do: 1.) If your bathroom doesn't have an overhead fan, you *must* bring one in, add an air purifier, bring an air mover...something. The fumes from this product are as pungent as they are acrid and eye watering. Highly recommend using a breathing respirator as well with dual filtering cartridges. 2.) The prep side of this video is a must. The bleach, the sanding, the mildew remover, the scouring powder...it does make the difference between a wrinkle free finish and one with bumps and bruises. 3.) You don't need to remove all the fixtures to get a "close enough" covering. If this is for a client, ask them if that's what they want. Many people add a lining of water proof epoxy to the handle, faucet, shower head faucet to keep water from dripping into the walls. Just assuming you can yank it might cause serious damage and not even be what's needed. Just use standard painter's tape. 4.) For most people who have an already white bathtub, you don't need the rather extreme amount of coating shown in this video. I managed a single coat for an entire bathtub and shower enclosure just fine and it hid the majority of the peeled off spaces. If you have a tan or off white enclosure, you'll need to buy the larger volume refinishing package. 5.) If you're not experienced in using a paint roller with roller brush and are aware of your body's proximity to freshly applied epoxy, just spend the money to get "painting overalls" trying to bend and stand and kneel at all these odd angles to coat your bathtub, if you're a newbie, will inevitably lead to it contacting your clothes, shoes, skin, etc. Just get the overalls and gloves and you'll be happy. 6.) *If you don't have a free 2-3 hours to prep, tape, and apply this product, don't even bother. Once you start using said product, you *cannot* stop as it begins degrading in performance, becoming totally inert at 6 hours. You want to apply this as soon as you mix the two compounds together to get the best adhesion and finish.

Did you clean your roller in between the first and second coat ?
@AliciaLynnYT Жыл бұрын
No. I wrapped it in plastic and put it in the fridge. No reason to clean it when you are going to use it again so shortly.
@L0ngstrip Жыл бұрын
The trick is to apply thick coats. Don't brush or roll on it too hard after application. EG, first few rolls for coverage, then give it a last one or two light rolls to remain thick in each area. If you do that with the two separate coats, the last one should not be see-through.

Do you need to do a primer? And will it go in a spray gun ok? Or does it need to be thinned?
@AliciaLynnYT3 жыл бұрын
No need for a primer, just do the prep steps in the instructions. As for a spray gun, I can't say since I've never tried it. I can see that working, though.

Good video, very informational. Personally, I don't like products like this because after the cost of materials and tools needed, you are spending almost as much as tiling the shower yourself, which should take less time from backer to grout if you are at all handy. Anyway, just my two cents. Good video for the product though!

Isn’t it that it covers 2 coats on a “standard tub”? Not a tub AND the walls. I would think that you would need a kit for each, the wall and the tub. Am I wrong?
@AliciaLynnYT3 жыл бұрын
It should only cover 2 coats on a standard tub and walls but we got 2 coats. As I said in the video though, I think the paint was thinner than it was supposed to be.

It doesn't sound right that initial sanding was wet 600 grit and 3 coat was 220. I would think the heavier scratches would be needed on old finish rather than 3rd coat???
@AliciaLynnYT Жыл бұрын
The 600 was just to do a light surface sand to prep it for the paint. The tub is fiberglass so you don't want to do a heavy sand on it. 220 is common to use between coats of actual paint that need a little heavier sand than the fiberglass. Also, when it comes to what sand paper we used, and when, we followed specific instructions directly from Rustoleum themselves. It worked great!
