"Phat" is basically the retro "Thicc", it's not offensive and I'm pretty sure it was cool back in the day for things to be "Phat". I know that the original PS3 was referred to as "Phat".

I've done bottom screens/digitizers on the phat DS. Never the top. Wow this is much better than later models where you have to pass the ribbon cable through the bloody hinges. I hate hate HATE doing that and have smashed up a DSi because I lost my temper trying lol

It's durable, can be played in the sun and has gba support and lasts a good 6 hours. These make it the best DS to get.

So happy that you posted this video. It's what i needed. I got from a thrift store a perfectly working ds fat for 2€. Only issue was the hinge was broken. But after seing in your vid that i could unscrew just the top half of the case. I was able to repair the plastic from the hinge with ease now that i had more space to work with withour the plastic back cover. What i did was to carve a piece of plastic that fits exactly in the place of the old lower hinge, and with a solder iron, i pressed on a small piece of a paper clip, like 0.5 mm, and i binded the two pieces of plastic together. Now i saved around 12€ because i don't need to buy a new case from aliexpress.

Just wanted to say, that pink DS is so pretty. I always wanted a pink one. I only got a baby blue one as a kid (which is also pretty but my reckless self broke it). Was thinking of ordering one from Aliexpress but it says iQueDS or something like that whrn you turn it on. 🥺 Its hard to find for me.

My original ds just had its top screen break. This helped me know a replacement screen will work. Nice to know I don’t need to do a ribbon cable through the hinge

Unfortunately my DS has a small spot of rust in the charging port. It still works, but it is kinda annoying that I didn’t take very good care of my DS when I was younger. I occasionally play my DS for the nostalgia and whatnot, but I can’t help but notice that dang rust in the port.

Original DS is surprisingly easy to repair. I love the top screen design, much easier to work on than DS Lite top screen repair.

Just a thought. Shouldn’t you have checked the inside of the main body as well to make sure that the rust was only isolated to the top screen shell? I’m just wondering if it got wet enough to rust out in one half that it might have in the other as well.

I have rust on the top display on the inside of the screen with my 3ds XL I don’t know how to clean that. It makes my corner of the right side and top orange.

I know this is rather late but I have a question. I have a first gen 3ds xl that I own and I fell down the stairs with it and it broke in half. I want to get my pokemon and game data off of it but everytime I plug in the new screen I got, it refuses to turn on and without it, it shuts off in 5 minutes by itself. Is there any way to fix it or is everything on it a lost cause? IT's got like 5 years of game data and stuff on it and I just want to transfer it all to my new 3ds XL.

From experience, it could also be a bad battery. If you have an extra one on hand, try swapping them out. At worst, you could be looking at a bad port/blown fuse on the motherboard, or something like that

I believe the ribbon cables are different shapes and length, if you are very well versed with repairs it may be possible but you aren’t just gonna be able to pop a ds lite screen in the ds

My original phat DS from 2006 is the PokePark 2005 exclusive from Japan ^.^ and it has the Pikachu sillhouette. Anyways, it makes a popping sound every time I turn off the power or turn on the power which it's been doing that since maybe 3 years after I had it. Hasn't really seemed to be too much of a problem but I just want to know if that is concerning? Also my Nintendo DS has a pixelating line across the screen I think since 2017 or 2018... I mean I don't think it's a big deal but a new one started a little below it a year after it happened but the new line hasn't grown at all luckily so again it's not that concerning until the entire touch screen is black or the blackness makes it unplayable for certain games. Crazy to think I had this Nintendo DS for 14 years of my life I am turning 26 years old in June! :D
