I’m restoring an m40, I took the previous paint completely off as it was already pretty badly restored, now I have to repaint it, I bought day 1944 paint, I tried on the shell to see if it would hold on, but it doesn’t, I can scratch it off with my nails. Do you know if I have to use any sort of primer or what I should do to make it work?
@urho5487
@urho5487 4 ай бұрын
You need to paint it with a white or really light gray primer first

Great work... As it is an M42, (I do not mean to be rude or picky) , the color should be "Field Grey" instead of what seems to be "Apple Green" (as used in early M35s). Also I am sure you realised that the chinstrap has been mounted with the black-side on the wearer's skin... and it should be the other way around. I could also suggest the drawstring (as it appears on the video) should be replaced with one that would resemble the original ones a little more. However, you have done a truly great job restoring this piece of history. Congratulations on your workmanship.

The red and white colours in the decal were found to attract enemy fire, so were ordered painted over prior to the France 1940 campaign. Many units, however, especially in the rear echelons didn’t overpaint theirs.

Use drywall then sand it. Make sure to use light coats to thick. I would advise to sand it down then put the drywall smoothly over the whole helm. The paint Will make the drywall strong and you wont even tell. And for youre saftey please wear a mask and hold breath as it contains silica dust.

And I might sound like a stickler but I would have textured the split pins before adding them. I probably would have aged the liner as well but that's just me, im weird like that, sorry. But it probably fares a little better than before anyway!🙄

I wanna clarify every doubt that could have, because I would like to try this if I had the opportunity to buy a WWII Stalhhelm (whether is the M1935 used by other countries such as the Chilean Army) or the M1942, the latest from the original design used by the Wehrmacht during the last years of WWII, and briefly used by the nascent Bundeswehr from 1956.

Nice as a restoration of an old piece of steel. But terrible for what it represents. Who knows in one of the many cruel photos we see youtube is the fierce protagonist. So it is to be condemned without appeal. Conclusion We leave the past to the past in its oblivion. We hope that the future will preserve us from similar worldwide tragedies. At least I hope so if, not for me, at least for our grandchildren.

i have a worrying feeling, the M42 i won at a auction, is gonna look the same under the horrible apple green and double SS decal paint job someone did in the 70s... at the parts where the paint fell off, it´s rusted like hell, but i only pait around 80$ for it and it´s a 60s or 60s ground find from normandy, so i have hope that the stamp is still visible, so i can see if it maybe even was a SS one, or if that lot number will even spit out anything or if it´s not registered... my plan is to make it a Fieldgrey, single decal WH helmet (WH stands for "Wehrmacht Heer", is german, but it´s basicly the same in english, so no need for translations there ig) if the lot number is visible but isn´t registered, or if there isn´t any lot number visible... it´s a size 68 though, so perfect for my big a$$ head... ^^

@@wwiituberestoration1011 Take it off then ! High quality fake helmets use spray on decals which if done right look almost perfect or just leave your helmet with no decal

www.dday-1944.com does superb realistic decals in original style and make. Its a French shop. But something else u can do with basic decals is cut your decal tight round black outline and brush a little thin glue on decal area and sprinkle metal dust shavings over it, then put decal on over it. A light sanding will make the metal shavings show through.
