Lakers have the oldest roster in the history of the NBA. Many of the players on the roster are way past their prime and are too slow to play defense and will not improve with age. Who among these old timers could improve beyond below average defenders: Ariza, Augustin, Bazemore, Ellington, Howard, Melo, LeBron, Westbrook? AD shot 18% from 3-pointers this season. As a team the Lakers were below average shooters: 20th in the NBA in 3pointer%, 20th in the NBA in rebounding, 23rd in the NBA in defensive rating and 29th in the NBA in free throw%. Lakers need younger, better shooters, rebounders, and defenders.

@@PapiWaron It's not a reach from Boston's perspective but it is for the Nets', I was talking about Boston's. But from Brooklyn's perspective, I don't like when people say "they missed on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown" because we don't know if they would have drafted the same players. On draft night Brown was a bad pick for some analysts, they said he was a 5th pick at best, worse than Kris Dunn and Dragan Bender. Tatum was fine but maybe worse than Josh Jackson and trading down and not getting Fultz was a bad move according to some analysts too. So what I'm trying to say is that this should be stated as this, the Nets' traded picks turned into the 17th pick in 2014, the 3rd pick in 2016, the 1st pick in 2017 and the 8th pick in 2018.

What makes the 2022 Lakers worse is that if the NBA had never put the play in tourney in, their season would've been over about two months ago. And you can claim injury but the Clippers are actually the 8th seed clear by 4 games minus their stars all year.

So one huge thing you forgot to mention with the Nets was that their starting center and probably the best player on the roster at that point, Brook Lopez, missed pretty much the whole season with a foot injury. A lot of people would think "oh it's just Brook Lopez" but he was easily a top 5 center in the league at that point. I see this as a huge factor in why they were so disappointing because let's be conservative and say they'd win 6 more games if he didn't get hurt. That would put them at 50 wins and the third seed. Still slightly disappointing but no one would think to put them in this list if that were the case. Also, both Marcus Smart and Jayson Tatum were not drafted with the picks involved in that trade. The Celtics drafted Smart with their own pick and drafted a nobody (James Young) with the pick they got from the Nets that year. And then they traded that other Nets pick for the pick that would become Tatum, but that original pick was used to take Markelle Fultz.

I was around for those late 90's Barkley Pippen Rockets, so when I heard Lakers got Westbrick, I immediately got Vietnam flashbacks to those 90s Barkley Pippen Rockets, and I knew they weren't going anywhere. Barkley was the problem, they traded half a championship team away to get him. Westbrick was just a bad choice period. He fumbles the ball too much, he always has, he just used to make up for it with hustle, as his athleticism is fading so are his benefits. And Russ literally threw a game away all by himself in the Bubble when Rockets faced Lakers, it even looked like he got paid off to throw it, it was THAT bad. But if you know who he is, that's just who he is... I was surprised Lakers even wanted someone like that when they saw how terrible he can be up close, or maybe the Gm wasn't there cause it was the Bubble, idk lmao

I honestly think the 2013 Nets were a bigger disappointment. I remember a not insignificant amount of people saying that the Nets were a superteam and fleeced the Celtics at the time. No one thought that way about the Westbrook trade. Most people were unsure of Westbrook's fit but were optimistic that the sheer talent would work out. No one thought they were favorites to win the title but most people did think they were solid contenders. Think people are overstating the expectations that people actually had on the Lakers in hindsight.

How about the recent Nets and Clippers squads? Both very very disappointing. Can't imagine any team trading for Russell Westbrook being called the greatest disappointment in NBA history. Lakers had the oldest roster in the league and terrible roster construction in general. Perhaps instead the Lakers were the most overrated NBA team of all time.

sometimes 2 stars don't play well together. Russ is essentially lebron but a bit less efficient and 5 inches shorter. There's only 1 ball, so you can't just put 2 lebrons on the same team and expect it to work. Westbrook, without lebron playing averages 22/8/8 on 52/41/70 shooting, on about a 25 game sample size.

I just couldn't imagine a universe where Russ could fit with Lebron and fix his issues of decision making and shooting, not to mention that giving up most of the valuable role players such Caruso, KCP and Kuzma and replacing with older players who don't play defense wasn't a great idea either.

Yeah 90's pretty easy to figure why only so few teams won and Boston and The Lakers won like 30 seasons total combined , so there can't be that many older era seasons where a team failed hard. I feel like The Kings one year with Webber I think were stacked or maybe the oppsite and they made it further then thought.

I pretty much laughed at the idea they were gonna be projected to come out of the west before the season even started. I had them at best as a 4th seed even with LeBron, and hover somewhere around 6-7th seed. Not even in my wildest expectations did I think that 2 games after the ASG break looking at their remaining games did I find myself wondering if they'd even make the 8th seed. Then in a month they're the 11th seed. Lmao, could not have guessed they'd fail that hard.

7:11 A few notes on the 1999 Rockets since I've been a big fan of the team since the early 90s. They had a rookie backcourt(Mobley, Dickerson), a weak bench, and Pippen was coming off his second back surgery. They were definitely a disappointment, no doubt. Rudy T never integrated Pippen into the offense and instead utilized him like he was Robert Horry. And they choked away Game 1 against the Lakers(thanks to an awful Pippen turnover) and never recovered. But in retrospect, they were not gonna beat the Spurs, Blazers, or Jazz had they advanced.

I know some people rightfully saw that the big 3 weren't going to fit together but nevertheless, the Lakers were overwhelmingly expected in the media, and, if I'm not wrong, projected by the betting companies to be the best team in the NBA. What makes this season even more egregious for me is that all of the other teams discussed at least made the playoffs. This team couldn't even get into the play-in which is a luxury/opportunity neither of the other teams were ever granted.

2019 Celtics failed because of Kyrie and the strange desire by management to get AD. Danny Ainge had too much faith in both Kyrie and his chance to get AD that it blinded him to the talent that was there. Defining what you mean specifically by disappointing would have been good. Certainly the Finals-predicted Lakers being a shitshow throughout most of the season is one valid way of looking at it, but I think the 1993-4 Supersonics, who went 63-19, got home court for the entire playoffs, and then promptly shit the bed in the first round, becoming the first #1 seed to lose to a #8, would be another valid way of looking at it. With that being the first year after Jordan retired for the first time, that was the best chance that franchise ever had to win the title and they went out like absolute chumps.

By the time April is over that Spot may be taken by the 2022 Nets. A team that entered the season with 3 top 15 players (one of them top5) and with really heavy expectations since they were one game away from beating the champions despite injuries, will likely close this season with a first round exit. I know there's still a small chance the Nets actually have a good playoff run this year (and i really hope so because both KD and Kyrie are among my favourite players, especially Kyrie). But if that doesn't happen they have to be on that list. It's crazy that this level off failure is truly unprecedented but the Nets are a stone's throw away from achieving it, we might have the 2 most disappointing teams ever the same season
