It's not unusual to go into a home and see really awful drywall repairs. People consequently think it's a difficult process that only experienced professionals can do. While experience helps, the steps to repairing drywall are pretty much the same for big or small repairs. Glad it made sense, abc! Biggest mistake people make is trying to do it all in one step. The mud is pretty forgiving if you take it one step at a time and let it dry in between. Good luck with your repairs!

Hey Danny! Yeah, that's kind of the way I feel about painting. It makes a big difference and looks good when a room is painted, but I don't particularly enjoy the process. Doing mud work is something I do enjoy a bit more because the process is a bit more interesting to get good finishes. I don't like doing either more than a day at a time, though! Always good to hear from you, Danny! Boz and I need to head your way for a day of fishing one of these days before we get too old! I think we are pushing our luck!

It's just easier to use ultrathin fiberglass self adhesive mesh tape. I have never had a joint fail using it and I have done 100s of repairs. I always found paper tape more daunting to use. I also like to use a 14" drywall knife for floating and feathering after I have applied hot mud to the repair. This is a great tutorial for DIYers and is very detailed.

Thanks for your thoughts and feedback, Matthew. This is one of those trades where there is a big difference between the masters and everyone else, yet even novices can get good results, if they are patient. And there are lots of methods that work as well. I’m always amazed watching the guys on stilts taping and floating new homes or commercial jobs. I fall somewhere in the middle with my skills, but I can get good results. I’ve never needed to get really fast and efficient with my tools because I don’t do it enough to make that an imperative so I waste a lot of motion, but I enjoy the process. I appreciate you watching!
