I fucking love The Night Porter. I only recently watched it and I'm so glad I did. It's one of my favs and I've already watched it a dozen times. However, I don't think Lucia is Jewish. In one scene we can see prisoners with a yellow Star of David on their arms but Lucia doesn't seem to have one. In another scene, when prisoners are being asked what their religion is, 1 says Jewish while 2 more say Lutheran/Catholic. But when they get to Lucia, the scene cuts back to 1957 before she gives an answer. If I'm wrong, sorry, but I don't recall her religion ever being explicitly stated.

TNP is a disturbing, yet artful film--and should be widely taught, screened, and appreciated. (The first time I watched it, I admit, it freaked me out somewhat. And that's to the movie's credit.)

Lucia was singled out because her father was a socialist. Not religion.

Lost respect for her close to the beginning when she said that Lucia was jewish. She was the daughter of a prominent socialist and was not jewish. Director Liliana Cavani was explicit about her work NOT being about ethnic persecution. Wander how much speaker got paid to hear herself talk?

Um, the movie also “left out the Jews” from its plot though???

While I very much admire Ruth Ben-Ghiat"s position as a scholarly researcher and political commentator, it is obvious that she is implying that today's right-wing American and European patriots are nothing but reproductions of long dead dictators. But I do believe that she does not see the difference between past horrible attacks by European dictators against manufactured enemies and today's very real threats to American and European culture and civilization. Unlike Hitler's and Mussolini's use of imaginary enemies to motivate their countries to go out and actively attack other countries, today's never-ending flood of non-assimilating and culturally stubborn groups from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East is forcing patriotic elements to try to keep those groups OUT, not to keep them in nor to attack them in their own countries. And therein lays the difference between the past and the present, the difference between pure expansive murderous aggression versus honorable homeland survival and self-defense.
