Stop buying the cheap crap and buy the better stuff. It will last longer, which makes it CHEAPER. Example: 1 bottle of $7 shampoo that last 1 month vs 1 bottle of $25 shampoo that lasts 4 months because you use less of it. That $25 shampoo is actually cheaper than buying the $7 shampoo every month.

Professional products weren't freely available some 15 to 20 years ago and everyone had great hair with Walmart products. So, I disagree with this push for brand products. Abbey Yong reviews a lot of less expensive hair products. Personally, I had amazing curly hair with Supermarket hair products when it was virgin. I only added some professional products when I dyed my hair and even so I mix with my favorite ones, which are Walmart. To me, the advantaged of expensive products is they are essencial if you have chemically treated hair (dye, bleaching, etc) and we can use less product. If the hair is virgin, supermarket/department store products are enough. The only product I do think we should spend is heat protectant.

For the dry shampoo, I was on board until the actual real hair test. Leslie looked down to get her hair to slide back to normal position the second time she used living proof. & you could argue it was on top of the other dry shampoo because it’s the same place as not your mothers. Would not pass a real science experiment due to variance. Then with the heat protectant it was edited so much that it would have been better to see the heat applied & results. Jumping to the end results means we have to trust there was no bread swapping.

@@RR_9I thought about that too. But he didn’t compare volume but he compared moisture retention. So actually the moisturising shampoo’s should be better. I think he gave the drugstore shampoos an advantage even.

Maybe you didn't choose the right cheap products. Batiste's dry shampoo is AMAZING, better than some high end products I've used. The same goes for shampoos (e.g. Tahe is a wonderful, relatively inexpensive brand)Sorry but I don't think that all cheap hair products are worse than the expensive ones.

exactly. i hate this elitism of expensive just automatically equals better. many people, myself included, don’t really have the access to or the budget for high end hair care. and most people i know use drugstore. not all affordable products are just bad by default.

Yeah, people are complaining about the price but I have found that I can actually use less product especially with shampoos. I am amazed about how little I actually need to get a rich lather. So when I think my shampoo and conditioner will need to be replaced quickly, it actually doesn't with the more expensive brands. Plus, with my hair type, I can actually get away with washing once a week which makes this even better.

I haven't switched my shampoo and conditioner out yet but after using the leave in conditioner after my shower today I was amazed at how easy it was to brush through my wet hair. I also like the Redken blowout cream too. I felt great after blow-dry. It was hard to get the opalex out of the bottle. I'll need to use more of that. Just purchased the opalex 3 today to fix my hair. Hope it works.

I have very fine, almost straight hair. Even an oil heavy conditioner, very well rinsed out, can make my hair look limp and greasy. So I stayed away from oils for years. Then, my ends got really frizzy, and nothing seemed to help. So I bought a small sample bottle of oil ... and it took all the frizz away. I have to be very careful how I use it. Here's what I do. I very, very carefully pump out the absolute smallest drop of oil I can. Not a full pump, just the tiniest drip. I rub it all over the palms of my hands. then gently stroke my barely oily hands over my hair - just until my hair loses the frizz. When I'm done, there's still oil on my hands, so I wash them off. At this rate, I may never need to buy another bottle of oil again. This tiny bit of oil is all my hair needs. Everyone's hair is different, and you may (probably) will need more oil. FYI, I bought an expensive oil for my experiment, as the mini bottles don't cost that much. But I bet the lower cost oils will work if applied this way.

I don't style my hair so it still never looks good but it has been as soft as it's never been since switching my shampoo and using the right conditioners. What was an incredible step towards this softness was mixing the Redken conditioner with one from Nature Box I already had before changing my routine. You can't just mix conditioners willy-nilly but I looked it up and these two are fine together and the result speaks for itself. Now running my fingers through my hair is a new comfort I never knew before and am making the most out of, haha.

I found you a little while ago and your tips have made SUCH a big difference on my hair. I have wavy hair so have been following the ‘curly girl’ advice mostly. And have always been really protective with my hair. But now, I’m using the right products and have been able to heat style my hair and wear my hair with a beautiful blow out frequently. I’ve been using the Garnier Flat Iron Protector for years and always go back if I try another. I straighten and flat iron and it keeps my hair straight better than anything else with fantastic movement to my hair. I don’t need hold from the Redkin because I want my hair to flow and anything with hold makes it stiff. You are curling hair with a FLAT IRON product - you are mixing apples with oranges. Anything with hold, when you are flat ironing, stiffens and dries out your hair because you are fighting the hold to get hair that is soft with movement. I hope I was able to get my point across.

Don't call them Target brands. Target also sells high end shampoo's and conditioners. The Target brand is Up & Up. Pantene and Dove, are not Target brands anymore than Redken is. This is important to get right, considering what you're trying to get across.

I have very fine white hair. Since I switched to Olaplex and Redken from my Wenn hair routine, my hair has stopped breaking at the ends, it looks thicker and stronger, and has an amazing shine. I no longer have to wash and style it every 2 days. I can now go a full 4-5 days and it still holds the style and shine. Thanks you for these videos. They have saved my hair.

I am obsessed with this channel and I use every single expensive product in this video but for the first time non of these tests were fair. 1) There was visibly more oil to work with for the market products and they were not shaken well prior to spraying. Not your mothers sprayed no powder so of course it didn’t absorb the oil well. Also I would like to see the test for Batiste dry shampoo as well❤ 2) Yes Olaplex lasts 6 months because it has a dropper mouth and I use 3-5 drops each time. The other two just have a big hole so you easily spill too much product. I agree olaplex is the lightest oil out there cause I’ve used them all having fine hair. BUT they used so much more oil for market products in the video. 3) I hate nourishing market shampoos and they make my hair oily since I have fine hair and I use Redken volume BUT those are not dupes because you used “nourishing” market shampoos v. Volumizing high end shampoo. Instead, two volumizing or two nourishing ones should compete.

Y'all should have done the OGX oil on the hair against the Olaplex one. I've used both. I like both equally 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'm currently using the OGX one, you don't need a lot at all and it does spread for me just fine. I've been deep oiling my scalp 1-3 times per week (on wash days) and I use the OGX on my ends everyday. I use a small amount. My hair is still bouncy and so soft even on day 3 hair.

OGX first dry oil ingredient is dimethicone, one of the worst, heaviest, hardest to remove from your hair. Imho, anything OGX is garbage. They used to be called Organix until they were forced to change their name because there’s nothing organic about their products. I’d spend on Olaplex or for a de-frizzing oil, a couple drops of pure argan or grapeseed oil rubbed between your hands then smoothed over your hair.

The small amount they use of the Olaplex one is the amount I use of the OGX one. Sometimes I forget to use it, but I use it a minimum of 3 times per week.

I love the Redken shampoo and conditioner mentioned in this video. I had to wash my hair whenever I went outside which most of the time meant every day. I have been using it for the past 2 weeks and my hair has improved SIGNIFICANTLY. It is less oily and way shinier than before. Also, I have noticed that my hair looks like it has more volume. I love drug store hair care tbh. If you have knowledge on ingredients and know what works for your hair , you can find amazing products. You can buy high end but it’s not for your hair type it’s not going to work, and vice versa with drug store. Only high end I use is k18 which Ik he doesn’t like but it really does wonders for myself and has helped keep my hair feeling better to prevent further damage.

Yeah, he talks a lot about saving money with high end products due to the quality. I have really only found that to be true with shampoo. I'm able to wash my hair a lot less frequently, and I actually am usually able to use less product when I do wash. So for me, it's worth it to buy fancy shampoo :). But for other types of products, including conditioner, hair masks, hair spray, heat protectant, etc., I end up using approximately the same amount of product at about the same frequency. I don't really style my hair very often at all, so the only high-end products I buy are regular shampoo and dry shampoo. The dry shampoo I am not saving money on -- it's just the only one that works for me. I've tried just about every other dry shampoo from the drugstore, amazon, etc. I've also tried a number of higher end dry shampoos. Literally none of hworked for me other than one brand lol...I've actually tried all 3 dry shampoos he compared in this video. I found them to all be equally just kind of effective, but not great. Though I would've said the Dove was the worst.

Totally agree the OGX coconut oil is waaaaaay too heavy to use the way you use it here and the Olaplex oil is much much better as a finishing oil. BUT please have a look at Abbey Yung’s videos where she uses the OGX coconut oil as a pre-wash conditioner and it’s a game changer! Also, would have loved a comparison of the Pantene Volume & Body with the Redken Volume as that’s more like for like and on a par which each other.

Also worth noting- there are lots of salon brands with only drugstore ingredients. So it’s all very individual. It’s not that all drugstore brands are bad or that all salon brands are good.

I just want to start out by saying I LOVE your channel. I was someone who went completely blonde the last 2 years and my stylist never schooled me on how to care for it. YOU did. With that said, I disagree with your dry shampoo part. I only use professional shampoo and conditioner, however I do use dry shampoo to maintain my scalp as I do produce a lot of oil. I do use "Not your mother's" as my professional shampoo does an amazing job and I only need it as a "little touch up" during the week. As I do think the $30 dry shampoo is superior I think there should be a caveat. Thank you for your videos and educating us all!

Olaplex oil smells like nothing from inside the bottle but it actually has a pleasant fruity smell. I use very little two times a week, so those 30 bucks seem like a lot but, as Chris says, it will last you for a long time even if you're using a bit more a bit more often than me.

may I say I love the olaplaex line, I know not every product is for everyone but olaplex 3 is my holy grail, I tried the K18 and the living proof, its literally night and day, the K18 and the living proof are terrible, just weight the hair down and the living proff I followed the instructions to a T and it made my hair feel like plastic and I had a bunch of breakage, like I don't know what to do with that, do I try to use less and maybe it will be ok, its just weird, where as Olaplex 3 is like incredible and never makes you play guessing games and always makes your hair beautiful and feel good like how you want your hair to be feeling, clean and healthy and bouncy and smoothed out, Olaplex 3 is the best hands down for anyone with any level of any damage ever!!! This is amazing to see the difference in these products, Im amazed at the differences, thank you for doing this video Chris, this is really helpful!!!

Thank you for showing the actual difference, I admit to having considered some cheap options vs. the more expensive versions. Ended on happy middle with over 10 years of usage on Head and Shoulders due to having Dandruff, would love to see the middle ground too and not just the cheap vs. expensive options. Admittedly I am hesitant to buy redken due to their price, having natural curls and being a student. You speak very little of natural curls, so it makes me think that it is out of your expertise range, which is fair. I am still learning these things though and it is very interesting to see the differences. I have definitely seen the difference between some higher end products and lower end products where it was not even close. I am still not super good at hairdrying/diffusing, but i'll get there eventually.

Like with most things in life, you get what you pay for! I was always super reluctant to fork out on my hair even though I spend £££s every week on things that I don't need. I finally bit the bullet and started buying salon brand hair products after finding this channel. Same, I've always been at a loss with taking care of my hair and since a year ago when I started listening to Chris here, game changed! I was always cheap with products but needed more all the time.. Since I started using better quality which is usually more expensive, I don't have to wash it as often and it's finally healthy. It doesn't have to be super expensive, either.. the one thing I go through quicker is conditioner of course, since we need more of it. But we're not supposed to need a lot of shampoo and now I really see/feel the difference:) there are some higher priced products that aren't for everyone's hair though, gotta go through a few sometimes to figure out what's best or even just take notes on all of the advice we get from this channel and it's better right away:):)

I used to cry thinking my hair was messed forever, no one had the right answers and nothing I tried worked.. ended up with way too many products I didn't need, ended up being more expensive anyway.. DermaE makes a dupe of the Olaplex oil for about half the price. Similar packaging and texture. I would recommend that if you want to save a little. I don't think the oil comparison was the most informative because there's a huge variety of oils with varying textures, and they can be used differently. OGX is great as a pre-shampoo treatment. There are other oils and serums, too.

Honestly, why not? Drug store is cheap, there’s not much loss if you want to start trying cheaper options, I have a mix of cheap and expensive products, cheapest is conditioner. I was once traveling abroad at someone else’s house spending the night, and the only hair conditioner available was a super cheap local brand one, BEST I’ve ever used, hair was soft, shiny, and manageable. (I have coarse frizzy hair)

Yesterday at U L T A I bought the Pureology Color Fanatic leave-in 6.7 ounces for $18.94. It has to be purchased via their app plus use the current coupon. The larger size also had a special app price. I have just below the shoulders length hair and this product will probably last for 2-3 months maybe longer. I have never actually used it before but bought it based on this channel. I read in the comments how the professional products are expensive for some people. But, most products have sales.

I’ve been using the ones you have suggested. Redken. Recently I went out of town and didn’t have my go to poo/conditioner. I used dove damage repair from the dollar store Omg! My hair felt so much better with the cheap stuff. The Redken dries out my ends regardless of how much conditioner I use. I also use the leave in you recommend and the hair oil at the ends. The dollar store stuff along with the leave ins made my hair feel silky and smooth. Not like hay at the ends.

I bought the Olaplex oil after you recommended it for taming the frizz the second day and refreshing your hair. It works a dream! I would never believe that the oil can make your hair look fresh and bouncy while killing flyaways. Funnily enough, I used the Fructis oil before and while it helps the dry ends, it definitely weighs them down, no bounce. I have been using Olaplex oil on shoulder blade length hair for three months and there is hardly a dent in my bottle.

Exactly a year since my ‘I’m going to sort my hair out’ New Year’s resolution. My hair was brittle , breaking and falling out, plus curly and had to be cut short as the ends were like pieces of cotton hanging down. Redken use to be my favorite until I tried the new line for damaged hair (pre-shampoo bonding treatment and leave in conditioner. It made my hair fall out frizzy fuzzy breakage. Just noting that that OGX brand is very expensive where I live, in Australia. One bottle of OGX is $23 - so getting both the shampoo and conditioner costs $46. Yes cosmetic products are more expensive here because they're mostly imported, but OGX goes well beyond the rest. That Pantene shampoo is $8 here - so OGX is almost triple the price of other 'drug store' hair care. And it's always been that way. So it's almost genuinely upsetting to see it's "another cheap drugstore brand" in the US, and then see these results... we have been well and truly scammed. Considering Redken is $25 per bottle here, basically the same price.

I love your videos. Because of you I changed my whole hair routine about a year ago. I use Olaplex alternating with Redken Volume injection Shampoo and Conditioner. I am excited about the difference it made. I can't decide between this two. So I use both rotatory. When it comes to hair oil I prefer Maroccainoil light . I love the smell and texture. But Olaplex Hair Oil is a winner too. And yes it's more expensive but they last much longer than the target brands.

I've tried the Redken Volume shampoo and after a couple of months it made my fine hair very dry and my scalp very itchy. I do use leave-in conditioner and hair oil or leave-in hair treatments but they just couldn't make up for how dry my hair got because of this shampoo. It does clean up the scalp very well and now I find if I only use it once or twice a month it's fine but not more than that. So not for me.

Unfortunately, it happened to me too.. I loved this shampoo and I used like 2 bottles and bought the 3rd one (so it’s been months I’ve used it) I noticed that my sculp became more and more itchy. I thought it was caused by something else (allergy, food, a hat, whatever) and only after I stopped using this shampoo I started to see improvements. The shampoo is good but it overdries the scalp a lot

I used a mix of high end and low end. It depends on the product and the purpose. I spend on high-end oils and treatments/masks. I have been using Olaplex for over a year by your recommendation and it's only a little less than halfway finished. I use 2 drops on my ends every day and for someone who hated using oils before and has fine hair, I have loved using this oil so much and will never use anything else. I've tried so many kinds over my lifetime and nothing compares

I’ve had a few questions since I started your recommended hair routine. I have long and fine hair but even with the Redken shampoo, I still have to wash my hair every three days because my scalp has always produced oil faster than average. With the Redken volume injection, do I have to blow dry or can I let it air dry? I have trouble finding the air dry shampoo online. I also prefer using a more natural conditioner like Raw Sugar or SheaMoisture and I don’t feel that they weigh my hair down. Also, can I mix and match the shampoo and conditioners, or do I have to use the Redken shampoo with the Redken conditioner? For me, I use what I know works, and I think there are a lot of just as good drugstore products that aren’t on your list.

I just love drugstore products. Before I was buying everything expensive, olaplex oils, bond repair treatments but my hair is so coarse, I need a lot of moisture, a lot of time I need to apply oil on my hair because it absorbs so quickly. That’s why I just started using drugstore products with expansive shampoo and conditioner, and my hair is now really really moisturised, nurished and healthy. Of course I watched all of your videos. In my opinion, everybody can have a nice hair even with cheap products, you just need to know how to use it correctly and maintain your hair properly. 🙂

I would love to see on the same type of hair (how fine, medium, coarse) side by side how the Redken Volume injection compares to the Moraccan Oil Moisture Repair. To show how each (shampoo and conditioner) compare on fine, medium, coarse hair and the wear time. Some of us have frizzy hair that's fine and the Redken set gets and keeps the hair clean but not as conditioned, but it's frizzier (even though it's supposed to be fine hair by how many days until it gets icky and greasy, 2-3) And the Moraccan Oil get hair clean but smoother with less frizz, but a bit less lasting time between wash. A demonstration on fine, medium and coarse hair like this (shampoo and conditioner) might helps some of us who find the Redken causes a bit of frizz but the Moraccan Oil less frizz, but less time between washes.

Stayed at my parents' house for a few days over Christmas, and used my mom's Pantene 2 in 1 because it was what was there, and even after using a leave in conditioner and applying oil to the ends, my hair felt so dry. Oddly, my mom's hair felt just fine after using the same products (I gave her a blowout), but her hair is a lot longer and thicker than mine, as well as having less gray, so I guess I didn't get her hair. Mine could be drier because I color. No bleach, just get my roots touched up every 6-8 weeks because I'm 80% gray at 43.
