ℹ️ About the Episode
They say absence makes the heart grow fonder, and no truer words have ever been spoken when it comes to our truck and Airstream. We thoroughly enjoyed our season of motorized RVing and appreciate that we were able to share our experience in Class As, Bs, and Cs with the KYD Community. But based on the way we travel-not to mention how fast we travel-the F250 and Airstream is the best match for us. It's good to be back. But not without a de-winterizing snafu! In this episode, Marc picks up the Airstream from Woodlands in Grand Rapids and drives 1,239 miles, stopping for just one overnight near Atlanta. We tried and failed to park the Airstream at the new KYD Bungalow, so we set up at an RV park instead to get the rig prepped for our upcoming trip.
De-winterizing should be a simple task-but this time, we ran into a couple of issues that set us back a day or two.

Watching the sink leak issues brings back memories of an ill-fated project of changing my stock faucet to a new high arch one. I anticipated an hour project. 2 days and 14 hours of work later, 5 trips to home depot later, I finished the install. Lesson learned, make sure the supply lines are the same size as the existing plumbing. 😂

We're not alone! LOL. This is reality, which is good for people to see. We turned our water on after winter and our floor got flooded. We had forgot to hook a connection back up after winterizing. Then we found out the water pump needed to be primed. Then we couldn't get hot water and found our mixing valve screen was plugged. Fun times.

Here a tip you might want to try to get your Airstream in tight places. Put a hitch receiver on the front of your truck and put the hitch on and hook to the hitch of trailer and push it where you want it to go. Shorter 16:53 turn radius easy peasy. If you ever want a winch it will fit in the receiver front or back of truck

Nice to see you back in the Airstream. The cold water mixing valve on the hot water heater can also accumulate debris on its screen, which reduces hot water flow. This happens to ours last year, It’s fairly straight forward to clean but getting it off the water heater can be a challenge.

As an RV technician, I see the clogged aerator somewhat often. It's usually attributed to the lack of flushing out the water heater. I show the customer how to flush out the water heater with the $15 Camco Tank Rinser, sell them one, and everyone's happy. 😁

I've started flushing my hot water tank at the end of the season before letting it sit empty in storage on bypass. I generally leave water in there during the summer.. There is a lot of hard water stuff that comes out. I just push a small tube connected to the garden hose though the tank drain. Nothing more than a homemade version of the tool mentioned. I would recommend cleaning before storage dries stuff hard.

That's one thing I suggest to anyone whether it be flushing a water heater at home, or part of the winterization, is to remove all the aerators, and even the shower head when winterizing, flush the system out, then back flushing the aerators to get the gunk out before reinstalling them.

Marc, my wife and I had the a similar issue with debris in the water lines after winterizing it. Be thankful because your issue was nothing compared to ours. At first I did the same steps you did to trouble shoot, but ended up cleaning every faucet and found we had algae throughout our coach. The algae had grown due to a mild spring and a late de-winterization. Unlike your RV, ours was a Newmar DutchStar with two baths, a washer, and residential fridge with icemaker. So cleaning out the algae took a lot of our time and effort. I had to clean out the water pump for the RV and the pump for the fridge. The fridge pump quit because of the build up and I can tell you moving the fridge out was no easy task. We then drained & bleached the entire system and ran it many times to remove the bleach. Our RV repair center said it is common here in Kansas with our weather being so unpredictable. We really love the show. We are going Full time in August. Hope to see you out there.

In the 70s I was in the USAF, There are gap filler radar site in our mountains to see within the valleys. We had a small hut when we worked there for a few days. We found we had water everywhere but the kitchen sink so we called it in. Not expecting any help in the near future we carried water from the bathroom sink as we needed it. On the third day a retired sgt. showed up who worked on base as a civil engineer. First thing he said was "You guys are all single right", YEP, walked over to the faucet and unscrewed the aerator,it was way more clogged than yours. He left saying remember when you get married and you'll become heroes for a little while 'til you screw up.

Thanks for NOT editing out the repairs! Always nice to learn an easy first thing to check if there is no water! Also I laughed at the chicken nugget holder as we have the same rack that gets used a LOT for chicken nuggets!

As usual, you’ve taken it to the next level. KYD Bungalow? Who knew? Love all the mods and work you did on the Airstream, especially that Dometic 12v ‘fridge, and the convection oven. It’s great to see Tori and Carson in the episode, but really, Caleb is The Dude. Rock On

Update: This year I left the water heater isolated from the rest of the system and flushed the pink antifreeze out of the lines with city water. Then I rinsed out the water heater with a handy rinsing tool while still leaving the water heater isolated. Then I reconnected city water and opened up the water heater with the plug out and let it rinse and flush the water heater. Then I put the plug back into the water heater, filled it up, and drained it out again. At that point was ready to sanitize the tank and lines with bleach mixture. When doing so I once again isolated the water heater. I didn't want the bleach smell in the water heater and figured heating the water would kill any nasties in that water anyway. It is unlikely that we would drink any water from the hot system anyway. Bottom line: no clogs this year and all went smoothly. Still a good video showing that issues do arise for all of us and with a level head, some thought, maybe a KZbin video or two and the problem can be solved.

So glad you shared this on the faucet clogging because it happened to me and sure enough I had debris in mine as well and the faucet had stopped working.

Mark, I have a backup camera on my Airstream Basecamp 20X and it is sometime helpful and it does provide a rear view camera when I am traveling down the road. However, the most important thing I have for backing properly is the expandable orange cones, that you have, that I place at the spots I need to be between and it works really well when I am by myself.

We always remove the faucet aerators before flushing the water lines in our Airstream. (We do the same at our house in Michigan when we return in the spring and soak them in vinegar before replacing on faucet.) Also, we no longer use the cheap blue water filters. After having to replace our 6gal water heater because of bad water in some parts of the country, we switched to the 2-stage Clear2O filters. Also, vinegar clean the water heater 2x a year and drain And sanitize the fresh tank 2x a year. Love Trish's storage and cooking tips.

I’m really looking forward to your “real world” numbers on the fridge. If the manufacturer numbers are even close that sounds amazing. I really love the maintenance style video 👍

I have so enjoyed your show the joy you all get from your family, friends and the travel. I think you showing the frustration and problems that you encounter, well it makes the show more real. Thank you very much for doing that. Keep up the great work.

Sorry Marc had to deal with the cold and long drive. Can’t wait to see more of the KYD Bungalow remodel and wonderful to see all the family together at the end of the video. Looking forward to another great season.

Marc: A very useful video. Not everything goes as planned, and that is what it is. Also, I had exactly the same plugged faucet problem last spring in our outside kitchen. Why would it completely stop?? Solved it in the same manner, removed the aerator and rinsed everything out. Like your situation, I am convinced that the water heater was the source of the debris. The filter discussion is relevant as well, as I am planning on added a filter to our rig this spring. I never had one as we tend to rely on bottled water for drinking and use the onboard tank only for cleaning, dishes, and bathroom duties. Thanks for sharing a less than perfect, but absolutely normal, experience.

you need a hitch receiver on the front of the truck. In tight spots like that I find I can push it in with no problem. Turning radius is totally changed. I have a long bed crew F-350 and a 32 foot trailer and no problems.

Marc, I have had the same issue at my kitchen sink. Same solution. Taking off the aerator. That opened another host of problems with the water system in my house but that's another story.

Would LOVE to be in Florida right now kayaking! What a great price for the guided tour. Today is the first day of Spring and we saw snow showers this morning in North Idaho! Every time I watch your video's I get the bug to get on the road. Great to see Carson. Looking forward to celebrating his graduation with you all.
