I damaged my rig very similarly at a gas station I presume, didn't even know it happened till we saw the roof flapping down the road. For eternabond application, leave the backing on, just peel back about an 1-2" of the backing to get it started/stuck, then I just keep doing that for the entire length whether its 12" or 12', might be able to do 3-4" at a time after you get it going, especially if its a relatively straight/flat run. Just pull away the backing as you go at about a 45 degree angle, out from under the tape, this technique is a lot more forgiving, you can keep adjusting the leading edge if you're off a little and get it back on track with your alignment mark, roof edge, etc, 1. align and hold 2. peel back a few inches of backing 3. press/roll it out 4. repeat Very similar to applying adhesive moulding, etc, to a car/truck.

Exactly. I’m a roofer. And I do that with full rolls of 36 inch wide ice water shield.

This is the way I would do it, and also don't pull the tape and stretch it out, let it lay naturally off the roll and just the slight tension to keep it straight.

This is the best way to apply. An added tip: if you apply in pieces, start at the back of the unit moving forward so any overlapping will not be subject to the wind while driving.

When I was backing my 4x4 and little van into the yard, a tree actually jumped out and hit the back rear corner of the van 🤣...you live and learn.
@jrichards47423 жыл бұрын
You could have done the whole strip if you had left the backing on and pull the backing off as you go, without pulling on the tape itself. I used a similar product and that was the instructions. That way you don't get it stuck to itself or you. It does help if it's not windy either way. Happy rvIng...

Also having an extendable ladder would have given you a better working angle for the job than leaning over the abyss. I plan on eventually doing all my roof seams with eternabond tape as it's a pretty old trailer and looks are secondary to function now.

Well thats a bummer for sure. I carry a 4" X 50' roll. Rubbing alcohol is a good prep if you don't have acetone on hand, also a 2" wide hand roller is great once the tape is laid down, makes for a nice smooth finish.

A single ply roofing contractor could of put your tape on in one piece. We are a Roofing and Mechanical contractor. Mechanical is hvac, sheet metal fab, and plumbing contractor. I would recommend to use roof caulking around your patchs. The edges will start lifting over time. Also the corner of tape need a small radius cut next time. Harder for tape corners to lift. Really enjoy you both !!! Thank-you for your channel on KZbin.

We did almost the same thing about 3 years ago. We pulled into a park , saw the tree, but didn't realize that there was one branch that dropped down lower than the rest. We were heading to our Vanleigh Service Center the next day, and no rain was predicted so we did a temporary repair and the service center fixed it the next day. I wanted to let you know that 3 years later, there has never been a problem. It sounds like you're all set also. In our case, we aren't planning to trade ours in so we don't have to worry about resale value. I sympathize with you because I know that feeling when you find out what has happened to your RV. Thanks for sharing your adventures and lows! Makes me feel good to know that I'm not the only one with these "waves" of happiness. My "roof story" has some drama: I'm driving a 37 ft RV [Thor Magnitude Super C] towing a Jeep Wrangler through Wyoming in October with 60mph cross wind gusts. The wind LIFTS my left awning [driver side] and throws it onto my roof, while I was driving. Suddenly I heard this incredible noise on my roof while I was doing 55-65mph and it sounded like a bear landed on it. I pulled over and took stock of the situation. I couldn't drive further with this condition and it was 4pm, getting dark by 6pm, and I have 200 miles to my campground. It took me about 1 hr to find a tow truck company to meet me at the location off a deserted lone highway. No problem, I turned on my generator and made myself a sandwich, had some soda pop, and waited for 90. min. I had explained the situation and he came with his pick up and ladder to cut the awning off and take it to the dump. Cost of the awning cut = $250. Replacement is underway and its under warranty. The positive of this story: I got the most incredible sunset shots that I've ever taken. It was worth the hassle! My Roof Story :)

Sorry to hear about your roof damage. We damaged our 2003 RV a couple of years back after a deer jumped in-front of our coach and it cracked the lower part of the fiber glass front cab. Considering the age of our RV and also the repair difficulties, I chose to do the fiber glass repair myself and had a vinyl foil (unique color design) applied that also functions a bit as a rock chip protection. This approach not only was part of the front cab fix, but gave the RV improved rock chip protection, and freshened up the overall look of the RV.

Sandra WESTLEY we managed to damage our van ( we are in the Uk) our body work and roof are all metal, we had sold our van just waiting for the new one to be delivered, and had to use the old van to go on holiday till the new one came, and of course we manage to brush up against a hanging branch, fortunately it didn’t puncture through but did a nice big dent, the dealer was sympathetic and he just knocked us down a couple of hundred pounds, so he would repair it, before he sold it, but I think he sold it without putting it right because we saw it leave the sales place still with the dent, so the dealer won both ways, he got our money and didn’t fix the dent.
@3920cruz3 жыл бұрын
from the photos the damage does not seem bad. The skin was ripped but not torn off unless the damage was worse than displayed in the video. So I don't see a big penalty as a result. I would suggest placing the eterna bond tape around the entire perimeter of the roof. It would give a look like it is preventive instead of a repair. And if you plan on keeping the rig for a few years, I would also place the tape around all places that have openings like the A/C, vents, etc... This tape is great and the roof will deteriorate around it.
@LizAmazing3 жыл бұрын
That's a good tip. Yes, if we did not tape up the rip (20' long!!!) then air could have gotten under there and lifted the roof right off. It's amazing how easy these TPO roofs can tear. I like the idea of a preventive piece of eternabond all the way around. We are actually researching a more robust roof as part of our insurance replacement- stay tuned!

Hi Roger, that's a great point. Those branches were so small I bet they didn't know. We told them what happened because we needed some paperwork from them for our insurance. Sorry about damaging your roof! In the 3rd year I owned my new RV, I stopped to use an automatic RV wash in Arizona. When I got out and put my money in the machine, the ground was uneven underneath my steps, and they did not retract back in. Therefore, going into the RV wash my steps got hung up on a safety bar, and completely ripped my steps and steps trim off my RV! Painted the jaws and fixed the hitch and put a pull test on the hitching list of items. Eternabond is awesome - you can buy it in an off-white color to match your roof color. I used it on our Solitude to cover the front and back lap sealant seams where the roof hits the front cap and rear wall. It is like an extra seal over areas that tend to open up over time due to the lap sealant settling. Thanks for posting this video.

We’ve owned our travel trailer for about 5 years now. This is our first 2nd home (😉) and we are the 2nd owners. It’s a little dated, by about 18 years, but for its age it is in great shape. No leaks being the major deciding factor. But being a newbie I watched all of the maintenance videos I could stand to watch on KZbin, and then got the great idea I’d inspect the roof and perform the yearly reseal. I got up there, did my inspections and I’m really glad I did because I learned a lot. Like, the original owners did absolutely take care of their rig when they owned it. You could tell they resealed the vents etc, because there was so much lap sealant up there I bet it was 3” thick and 5” wide. I watched a video where the guy used a Milwaukee oscillating tool and a flat blade to remove lap sealant, so I got the great idea to do the same. He made it look so easy lol 😂. It’s not. I ended up cutting straight through the membrane, and I mean straight through it. I could have puked when I saw what I did ! Eternabond to the rescue !!! It’s been on 4 years now and looks as good as the day I put it on. I now, with more experience, inspect our roof religiously and methodically, every MONTH. It may be overkill I admit that, but I do it. This year when I resealed I used a heat gun and a plastic scraper. It really loosened up the old lap sealant and made it 10 times easier to remove, and the plastic scraper is more than adequate to do the job. I also “painted” on the DiCore roof sealant system. I did the job by the numbers, following every step as published, and I’ll tell ya what, I’m really impressed with the results. I think I bought us about 2 years. I have plans to replace the roof membrane completely by then. I also plan to replace the skylight covers, I have 2, and we already replaced the OEM vents with maxx air fans. We have 4 of them. 2 of which I’ve modified to be able to reverse fan direction. So yeah, making mistakes comes with the territory my friends, and we make a lot of them lol, but, it’s nothing that can’t be worked through and over come. Good luck to you and God Bless you.

I first purchased Eternabond in 2010. It was very expensive back then and to this day I still have about 3 feet of it left. I use it sparingly and only for the roof. One bit of advice, get a large plastic zip lock bag and keep the roll of Eternabond by itself in the bag when not in use. It may sit around for a number of years and the sticky adhesive attracts all kinds of stuff.

For "physiological safety" I have used my awning as well. I do not like heights. I used 2" wide on the edge vs 4" and was not in the wind. It was much easier to handle. I also do not cut into strips . I only remove the backing as I am applying it to the surface; applying about 3"-4" at a time. Starting with about 1" of backing removed, adhere to the start of the roof edge and work from the front of the RV towards the rear. I lay the roll ahead of me (towards the front) and unroll about 12"-18" . The backing is still on though. then with one hand pressing down as I am slowly un peeling the backing about 3"-4" at a time. You're peeling & applying simultaneously. You end up with one contiguous strip the entire length.

Yep, been there. It is a sick feeling. I backed into a telephone pole with a meter mounted on it. I was moving very slowly, but with that much weight, it punctured a 10 inch hole through the fiberglass. The whole back end piece had to be replaced. As it turns out, the body repair tech discovered another hole by the previous owner under a plastic cosmetic piece. I now always setup and turn on my backup camera! I believe a good many of these mishaps can be avoided if we take our time and have a spotter. Thanks for sharing your real full-time life in your RV.

Turns out that the dicor was not properly applied at the factory where the front cap meets the roof. Tiny hole, big drips! New meaning to waking up in a puddle of drool. Another reason to carry an extra tube of dicor or tape as you guys have in this video. Dicor saved my pillow that night. Great video! Stay safe!

We did this exact same thing about 2.5 years ago on a previous trailer and didn't even realize we had come that close to any branches till we had interior water damage a couple of weeks later. We put RV FLEX Armor on the camper we replaced it with and also immediately put it on our recent upgrade to a new larger camper. It's not cheap, but you never have to seal/caulk/etc your roof again. It's virtually indestructible and has a lifetime transferrable warranty. Peace of mind and no maintenance makes the cost seem very reasonable. If you ever have to fully replace a roof it's not that much more so it's a no brainer over traditional fabric roofs. I am totally sold on this product and will NEVER have another camper without it. The authorized installer that did our roof had a big trailer come back to them after a large tree fell on it -- broke the roof framing in a few places but did not pierce the Flex Armor!! Note that there is also another product called RV Roof Armor but it's just a rubberized paint that goes on with rollers and brushes whereas the Flex Armour is a sprayed on flexible polymer that builds up to about 5/16 of an inch. I am in no way affiliated with this product, I'm just completely sold on it's value compared to the garbage the industry puts on most RV roofs. Every camper I have owned over the last 20 years has leaked at some point despite my best efforts prior to finding this stuff.
@LizAmazing3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome, thanks for your endorsement of FlexArmor. Like you, we lost confidence in TPO after it tore so easily. Here is our follow-up video comparing FlexArmor with RV Armor: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4rZYY2BiMupmMU
@davidboyd16173 жыл бұрын
@@LizAmazing Yeah, I've got blue jeans that will tear less easily than TPO and I've literally had crows tear off the caulking! We had our Flex Armor done at Reliable RV in Madison MS. About a 7 hr drive from home, and yes it takes a few days, but to us it was worth it. However, I do get the appeal of the more flexible install with the other rolled on product -- for us it wasn't available anywhere local either. Also, they way they install the Flex Armor in Madison they put new vent rain covers (which our trailer did not initially have ) and a new AC cover all of which look to be on a raised track of sorts so I'm assuming they can be replaced without damaging the coating-- I'm not sure all installers do that. If a skylight broke we would have to eventually get that area resprayed by them (though they said we can certainly do whatever we need to for a temporary fix with a new fixture and caulk), and as you mention in your other comparison video which I just watched any upgrades that would be roof mounted really need to be done before putting on the Flex Armor.

2 years ago there was a leak in front corner. My husband removed interior wall and certified no damage and did the cleaning and those chemicals and caulking. We caught it early and this last year we bought a tarp and covered it. We are parking it on flat ground next door is my sister's house and we are paying her mortgage so there us no need not to park it there. We took out the interior front side closets for a but He bed so the wall repair is needed anyway. Great video. Note to self watch out for trees. I had no idea they could do so much damage just by a graze.

Hi you guys, I like what you're saying and showing. Thank you. Hay, keep in mind there's a product called, Flex Seal. It comes in white, to reflect the heat. I've seen others use this in the one gallon bucket, on their RV roof with the fabric membrane. They rolled it on with medium and small rollers for detailing purposes just touching a 1/4" onto the roof vents in every area. They did it on really nice day, they let it dry 2 to 3 days without touching it. Don't touch it until the 3 day. You can do a test patch on a piece of fabric you get from a store. When that piece is dry your roof is ready. It works better than all the other stuff. The other folks that did this, did it 5 or 6 years ago, and their roof looks just as good as it did the day they finished rolling it on. It's like a protective shell. They have no roof problems to this day. IF they need to add some after market antenna or what have you. Just do it, and brush some more Flex Seal. Ive even used this on a pond for the liner where the edges meet.. once dry water does not effect it.. Hope this helps.

I pulled out of a street parking area after attending church for Easter in Rockford IL. The tail of my class A 36' rig hit a tree branch and crushed the rounded area side area about 1' from the back, hooked the rear cap, and tore it partially off. We strapped it back together and make the 5-hour trip home. At home, I took the rear cap off, repaired the fiberglass, rebuild the round side curve with metal, and applied 6" Etrnabond to repair the membrane roof. That was more than 10 years ago.

A similar thing happened to us a year or so ago. One additional step that is suggested to finalize the process for a permanent fix, especially if it is a place that is subject to high winds like near the front. Seal all edges and seams with a self leveling lap sealant such as a product from Dicor Products. Eternabond is a strong tape, but after peeling back the first time the lap sealant was the ultimate solution. I carry both the tape and sealant on board.

We also had a tree attack our fifth wheel with the same kind of damage along one edge. You're right on about doing it in 15 inch sections. However, it's much safer to do it on a ladder on the side rather than on the roof. You can lineup the lower edge of the tape with the upper edge of the gutter much easier and you're not leaning over the roof. I used non-sag lap sealant to fill in the deeper cuts first, then the tape after the sealant cured. Start at the back and work forward so the seams, except the forward most, won't catch the wind. Use a box cutter to cut the tape, much easier than scissors. Just lay it flat on a wooden surface to cut. I also found denatured alcohol cleans the roof easier than acetone. Finally, use tan tape since the roof doesn't stay white.

My friend and her hubby picked up their brand new rig and set off to a camp site. Unfortunately they were not told about this low hanging tree that was over the road to the campsite. Stuff happens! You did well with the Eternabond tape. I've done worse by misjudging a tree limb -- knocked off the plastic roof cap over the refrigerator vent and tore some of the EDPM membrane. Fortunately, my nearby RV supplies store had what I needed, including a new cap, Eternabond, butyl rubber gasket tape, and self-leveling caulking.
@LizAmazing3 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear that. Boy, those roof membranes are fragile, aren't they? I swear, the Eternabond is MUCH stronger than the roof itself! We are actually looking into a beefier replacement roof. Stay tuned!
@odontomatix3 жыл бұрын
@@LizAmazing Yes, I was shocked when I saw how thin the roof membrane is. The Eternabond tape is probably 5 times thicker, so don't feel bad about using some tape to repair a rip or seal a leaky joint. However, I wouldn't replace a good roof membrane just because it's thin. They last a long time and there are coatings specially made for each type of membrane that can renew an old roof without taking it all off.

I pulled out of camping site at Flat Iron Reservoir near Loveland, Colorado. I was more concerned about the large boulders and avoiding them rather than the tree. I got back to the house and noticed the antennae was leaning forward. I climbed up the ladder and sure enough, the tree had started at the front of the cap and ripped roof all the way to the back. Repair bill was $12,000. I learned that when entering or exiting a campsite, check obstacles on the ground and above the camper. Take 60 seconds for situational awareness before proceeding to prevent damage.

You have lived my worst fear! Our Grand Design is the tallest camper we've owned. Some tips to ponder and squirrel away: 1) 4" Gorilla Tape allows you to do a VERY robust temporary repair; 2) warm Eternabond in the sun before installation; 3) Eternabond is actually a repackaged detailing tape from the commercial roofing industry (I manufacture these membranes) so if you want an exceptional repair you can get a variety of widths, several colors, and paying one of those roofers a little side cash will result in a fast repair that looks perfect and in long pieces; and, 4) if your insurance will pay you the cost outright, bank it and wait till you really need the roof or before you are ready to trade/sell. Reason being, the construction of the roof is such that it should only be re-roofed once. FYI - it's not pretty when your roof delaminates in tow. Factory replaced ours in the fall!! Finally, your scratches in the full body paint are EASY repairs! GD will give you color codes, and then roll into a major city with German car dealers and ask who their paint correction guy is. They'll fix it to where only we very serious car guys will know it. There's a fella at the Factory Service Center that corrects paint with the best with them too.

Having been thru this myself, I decided to put a new polymer roof from the folks at RV Roof on both my truck camper (AF 865) and my trailer (Grand Design Momentum 21G) right after taking delivery. You get a 3/16” thick sprayed on roof that just doesn’t care about trees and won’t leak. The downside? It’s darned expensive (about $170/foot) and must be done at an RV Roof installation facility. For me, a full timer with three RV’s it’s been well worth it on the two that have this. Probably too expensive if you don’t full time or don’t plan to keep the RV for a long time. Thanks for the great video, guys! I may need that tape on my old RV that doesn’t have the thick roof!

OK so you feel better. My husband was bringing the Tundra down into the driveway and didn't see the trash can and hit it with the front bumper pushing it THROUGH the outer shell on the trailer. we were screaming at him to stop and he's looking puzzled and kept coming.. Used body stuff to patch it. but WAIT there's more!! The OTHER time- was he was backing his motorcycle into the driveway ( we have a steep downhill driveway) and started to drop it- but the trailer "caught it" right through the outer door panel. I think he just didn't like the trailer because the bed was too short. Word to the wise- test the bed LENGTH. The jack knife sofa is not too comfy. We traded it in and got a pretty good price because we only used it 4 times even with the body damage and it even still smelled new inside for a much older toy hauler (we no longer have MC's) but we are remodeling it for a floor bed using the suspended bed space for storage and removing to 200 ft long (joke) sofa and rearranging the dinette benches. What's great is they fold up against the wall if we don't want to use them and the table folds up and is removable easily. So we'll have a raised patio too.

We had a ‘40’ Jayco 5th wheel and had the same experience only out damage was like limited to 10’ over the bedroom. I caught a 14” Oak limb and damaged the aluminum roof radius ( crumpled). I cut away the damaged metal and replaced it a piece of 6” aluminum dust from HD. Used a quarter of the diameter which matched the existing profile. This was adhered with rubber cement. Our rip also created a puckered / ripped tear. I cut some of the pucker and adhered with rubber cement. This was to give a “smooth” surface. I used a similar DuroTape repair. You can make a one piece repair if you only peel off 8” of the backing at a time, stick down with no bubble/wrinkle. Be sure to roll down the DuroTape with a hard roller. Later when I took it in to have the roofing replaced I was told that the repairs we done so we’ll that it would have lasted for a long time. Needless to say had the insurance check and the time so it was replaced

Of course my eagle eyes noticed these "scratchy" spots right away . . . he hadn't realized the damage to the paint until I showed him LOL - it happens!

Yikes! That must not have been good. But you're right, stuff happens!

Use Toothpaste instead of using and abrasive scrubby. This is what I use for the drip marks around the windows that run down the side.

I admit, I too ran under a low hanging tree limb. Little rips all along the drivers side roof top. It’s all fixed now, but thank goodness for insurance. That’s why we pay for it, use it and live and learn. Love your videos and keep em coming. Happy many more trails. Michelle from Tallahassee Fl

Ahh yes, we were at dumping station and we kept out hoses in a tote in back of truck. Well after all done and everything put up I forgot to close the tailgate and processed to make a left turn. Heard a sicking crunch and scratching noise. Yep tailgate right into generator door. 300.00 to replace. We have a 2020 425ts raptor and love it, yep we decided to sell our sticks and bricks. full time now. “

Yikes. Those are the kind of lessons you never forget. Congrats on being fulltime! Hoping to see you out here.

Dont sweat it, Eternabond is your friend. Maybe use a heat gun to get the torn areas to lay flat> then apply tape?

That might work. Thanks.

At the end shot, looks like Paul was having a "Chevy Chase moment". Check the edge of the damaged roof material to see what type roof membrane you have. Informative vid. Keep them coming.

Paul, we put it on by tagging down end, rolling out long strip, with backing still on. Then line up perfect. One hold straight, while other removes backing and presses down. That's how me and Mrs. Fixer did ours! Wish I had shot it. But was out of hands!! 😆 🤣 😂

I had a bad spot on my 2009 campers roof beside the exhaust fan, a little over one square foot area. I took my camper to a local RV center to get an estimate for repair. We had to make an appointment two weeks latter just for the estimate. My camper is a trailer and is about 23'-7" long overall, the body is just 18'-7" long. It was clear that they did not want to do the roof replacement, the estimator said it would be around $12,000 to replace the roof. I bought my R-Vision TC-21RBH camper new for around $13,000 from RV Wholesale in Ohio. My wife and I looked at new campers before we went to get the estimate and didn't see any thing we liked as well as our camper. Our Camper Has: (1.) Low weight, the UVW (unloaded weight) is 3345 lbs. I tow with a new 1/2 ton 2023 Chevrolet Silverado that is my daily driver. (2.) Good Cargo Capacity, the CCC is 2312 lbs. (3.) Large storage area, it has a bed the folds up and a back door that is 30" wide where I can put two large storage tots and my cook box I have had since being an assistant scout master. (4.) A large front U shaped dinning table with room for 6 people. (5.) Double door refrigerator that runs on propane or 120 VAC. The freezer gets down to about zero degrees Fahrenheit. (6.) Closet to store hanging clothes, and many storage cabinets. (7.) Four burner propane stove with oven. (8.) Crank up TV antenna with amplifier that works. (9.) 14 foot awning. (10.) The finial thing, the size allows us to go where ever we want. We usually stay at State or Municipal Parks. I am 75 but I fixed the roof myself. I cut out the EPDM roofing to the center of the ceiling joists just wider than the soft area with a utility knife. Then used a vibrating saw to cut the OSB. The OSB fiber board was all wet and rotten. The insulation under it was also wet so I removed it and allowed time for all else to dry out. I replaced the fiberglass insulation and the OSB fiber board with a new piece of plywood, glued the EPDM roofing back down with contact cement from a spray can and then used Eternabond tape at the cut I had made. It gave a 2" over lap on each side of the cut. I cut the pieces of Eternabond tape to length. I then pulled back about 4" of the backing on the Eternabond tape, and pulled off more backing as I applied the tape. Used Butyl tape under the edge of the roof exhaust fan and also the skylight. Cleaned up the squeeze out of the Butyl tape and applied Dior Lap sealant over the screws and edge. I also replaced both sewer vents and the skylight over the shower tub, they were all bad due to UV. The leak was at a spot where there were brackets that held on a large shroud over the roof exhaust fan. They had caulked over the brackets but not under. My wife and I camp a few days ever month about 7 months a year. We also help take care of our grandsons. When we make camping reservations, we tell our relatives and a few friends. They can make a reservation, the state parks are only about $30 to $50 a night. Our one nice has a popup and our daughter has a large tent. We are the center of cooking.

We use Eternabond frequently but never cut lengths. I roll it out as I go and only pull the plastic backing off as I work a few inches at a time. My work buddy controls the roll as I work off of it. Eternabond is good to have on hand for small spot patches too.
