RV Repair: RV Door Latch and Lock Replacement If you are Locked out.

Thank you so much. That is exactly what happened to me. I am a 72 year old gal living alone (no one to help) in a Class B+, so I could climb over the drivers seat and get in and out, but was not practical. By watching your video I figured it out enough. A neighbor in the RV park came and pulled on the fork part to get it open, I just wasn't strong enough. I put the plates back on and I can still use the deadbolt to secure until the replacement comes. Thanks again.....I am very grateful. Tana

Thank you! I’m 74 yr old Marine Amputee. At Pigeon Forge in Tennessee. Son went out the class C door and shut it. I locked it up for the night. Woke up next morning and the door won’t open. This is the Third Tristar lock I put on this RV. Each time it broke I was on travel or at a football game. This last time I took the 3 bolt out and the door opened. This time sealed shut. I looked at your video and You said a needle nose pliers and pull the latch back. I ask God let me have had enough mechanical sense to put a needle nose pliers in my RV. I opened the bag and there it was: a needle nose pliers. I pulled the broken magnesium part back and the door swung open. My wife was too afraid the use the dead bolt. She said just leave it open all day. The lock broke on the day after 4th of July. Your video at 4:30 am on July 6, 2024 help me enjoy the last day with my grandkids. My wife ask me was I crazy working on a door at 4:30 am. I told her “It’s a man thing”. Thank you Sir for your video! Note: When I removed the lock, the spring and several parts fell out. This was a poor design. In 13 years since we purchased this Forester, I’ve change this lock 3 times with a broken lock. I’m going to change this lock every 4 years.

I am so amazed at your Story. I am also glad I was able to help you get the door open and fixed. Try to get a a lock with a steel plunger. Most of the new ones are made of steel and a magnet will stick to them.

Do you have the link for the lock you bought with steel plunger (on Amazon). My door is currently “frozen” shut…..still working on it.

@@btritt2004 can you get into your RV? If you can, take off the plate of the lock with a screw driver. There you will see the lock slide. Use your flat head screw driver to move that slide to the left while pushing your door. The door will open. The lock the company sent me broke in the same way. I’m going to get a totally different lock installed. Good thing that this time I knew how to open the door.

@@jerryshelby3700 I have been entering & exiting through drivers door. I had to step away for a bit as I was getting frustrated. I have the cover off of the plate, was pushing the lever hooked to the spring while pushing on the door, still stuck tight. I will go back to it in a bit.

Once you get the plunger out you can put the handle back together and use the dead bolt to secure your rv till you can get a replacement

Thanks for this assist. Our coachmen class c door lock busted in two just as you showed in your video. I was able to pull the lock myself with a needle nose plyers from the inside and pop the lock assembly out we swapped it out as we were camping when it happened and the local RV store had an exact replacement with steel mech charged us almost $300 ouch

Mine broke on Christmas. Finally received the new one from the RV builder, as it was still under warranty. I have now watched your video a couple of times and am ready to give it a go. The reason I could live with it this long is....I took out the basic lock. The deadbolt still worked with the key from the outside. I bungeed it closed at night from the inside. I sure hope this works. Thanks for your video!!!

Thanks. I had to cut those tabs off as well also my strike plate couldn't be changed so I had to take the old torx guide studs and put them in the new lock and it all worked. The guide bolts (studs) were about 20 thousands thicker and wouldn't allow the door to shut..

@@RedJeepClub we are actually changing to a different brand. After lots of research even the steel shank model fails in about a Year. I hope someone puts together a class action lawsuit against Trimark. Very scary things have happened due to their products.

As an expedient, I was able to take the latch apart from inside the coach, remove the broken part and spring, and reassemble the lock on the vehicle. That allowed me to use the deadbolt to keep the door closed until I could get the replacement parts.

There's a kit on the market to replace just the broken piece in about 3 minutes. A video on here shows the install, and you won't have to spend the $200, cut off anything or change keys.

Thank you for the vid. Same thing happened to us....wife on the inside, me on the outside...no tools on the inside...they're in the outside compartment. Anyway, lucky to find a guy to take it apart after crawling in the escape window. Now....have a new identical unit. Any hints for lining up the levers with the little prongs so the lock flippers really work? And, Once they are inserted and in place, we can't get the screws to go in since the holes are just a wee bit off. Any hints?

I think I had this problem and I think I used the old one. It fit and still worked so I was good to go.

@@RedJeepClub They sent 5 screws, all flat heads and all the same size etc. One screw goes into the plate (the other half of the door mechanism, not the plate on the side of the door) just fine but the other 2 go in and stop. I hesitate to force it...don't want to strip threads. I picked up a few narrower by a smidge today at Lowes. They seem to fit in better. The joys of an RV. Thanks your reply, Ron

That is a horrible feeling. When the door won't open and you have no idea why or what to do. Like I said in the video I was 200 miles form home and my kids were inside. Luckily they could take it apart so we could get home.

I watched another video (regarding exact same trimark latch replacement) where he replaced the striker bolts in the new latch with the old striker bolts because the new latch striker bolts were slightly bigger and wouldn't allow to latch. He used 271 loctite to secure them. Seemed to work for him. He didn't have to change the striker plate. I wonder if he had replaced the old striker plate with the new , if the new striker bolts would have worked or if there was something else that would have prevented it from working correctly. I'm somewhat hesitant to try this myself but I would sure like to give it a try. My door is getting harder and harder to open. I want to change it out before I get locked out as you did. I can get into my rig through the cab if that happens but.....

This is helpful if you are locked in, but not locked out with broken latch.

At least you have some new information so you know how or what you can do. Either get into the camper and take it off or maybe you could drill out the mounting points from the outside.
