It is a humbling experience to know you are in the midst of one of the most memorable experiences of your life. It is a bit like a wedding or a birth of a child. We were all hyper aware that this day would be one of the most unique and exceptional experiences we would ever have.
This particular tour is based out of Anchor Point, AK which is about 15-20 miles north of Homer. There is camping within a mile of the boat launch which we recommend for that early morning departure time.
The tour is highly restricted!! There are age restrictions and mobility restrictions so do your research. It is also, admittedly expensive. As it should be. One wrong move and the relationship between these bears and visitors could be changed forever.
There are no guns and no bear spray on this island and the interaction is not for the faint of heart. Our guide was very knowledgeable and set the tone right away.
Alaska has several bear viewing and interactive experiences available which vary wildly on how close you get to the bears, how many people will be there at the same time and the environment the bears will be in. They are all expensive so we opted for the one that would be the most natural environment with the least amount of people and we have zero regrets!! We hope everyone who wants to gets the chance to have this experience and we are so grateful to be able to share ours with you!

Thank you for sharing. My husband and I have always said our first trip when he retires is we are going to follow the summer up to Alaska and we are finally 5-10 years from it. We are buying our first travel trailer in the next 9 months or so (we have also picked a Grand Design, the 23LDE), so we can be comfortable with it by the time we go to Alaska. Loved the bears, we have been planning on going to Brooks Falls, but this is now on our list as they are so many less people where you went. Can't wait to see where else you went.

All the years we have been going to Anchor Point, I didn't know that you could take a boat across to the other side and see the bears, you learn something new all the time! We do a different adventure out of there. We plan a weekend when the tide is going out in the morning, not too early mind you... and we take the ATV's and head south on the beach and take the shore line to Homer. All the way out to the Homer Spit. Depending on the tide, we have made it all of the way to Land's end. Few ever go there on the beach between Homer and Anchor Point so just like the bears, the wild life is all over. Eagles everywhere, the sea otters and seals actually will haul out of the water there and lay on the beach. Stuff most never see. Its the only place outside of the Sea Life Center in Seward that I've ever seen a sea otter come out of the water. Did you stay at one of the campgrounds at Anchor Point down by the water?

Oh wowwwww! That sounds amazing. Is that something we can do the next time we are there or do you have to have your own ATV? How cool!! We met a lady once that was working on a construction crew and ran down to an overlook at the Grand Canyon to see it. She had lived 8 miles from the canyon her entire life and never seen it. These things happen! We opted for the campground since I was going to be staying there alone (with the dogs) while Jim ran Avery to the airport in Anchorage. The beach area was breathtaking to see!

@@lifebetweentheditches1307 we actually have our own ATV's and we have been riding for years so we have all of the associated gear like helmets and what not. I know that north of Anchorage there is a place or two that you can rent ATV's from but not sure down on the peninsula. There are no guided ATV services that do that ride that I'm aware of. Surprised that there isn't because it is a spectacular ride. Maybe because the tide decides what days the ride can be made and the tide is nothing to fool with. We're planning to be down there mid August, about the 19th, there is a favorable tide for making the run. We were there about the same last year. Last time we stayed at the Slide Hole state campground which is the second to last campground on the North side of the road or the right side of the road as you head towards the water. This year we're going to try the RV park just before the water on the right to avoid ATV issues with the park rangers... Those are the only two campgrounds there that will hold my rig or yours. I'd rather stay at the state campground. With the bigger than basic solar and 6 lithium batteries, I'm a pretty self sufficient glamper... ;-) but what i really miss for camping there was in the days before the tractor boat launches into the surf. The state maintained back in the day a ramp to the beach that was RV friendly and there was a hard packed trail from the parking lot to near the mouth of the river. Our rigs wouldn't make it but you would see Class A and Class C rigs and travel trailers 25 foot or smaller lined up out on the beach either facing the river or facing Cook Inlet. It would turn into a small city on big holiday weekends. But if the weather was good, it was an awesome place to camp. Now days with the tractors and their big tread tires, its all chewed up and trying to get a RV out there is a bad idea. The other secret about Anchor point is for your campfire. To the south on the beach a little way down are natural coal veins that dump coal out as the bluffs erode. We harvest a bit of that to add to our fire after the wood fire gets good and hot. It helps with the bugs, but also, later the next day, stir the coals and throw some wood on and presto, its fire. The coal simmers under the ash all day and is hot enough to start the next fire. Awesome for a multiple day camp outing. Its the only time I don't use my propane fire pit I carry. What are your target dates for coming and going from our little corner of paradise?

Amazing that this experience even exists given what we have known about grizzly bears. Full disclosure: really really grateful not to know about it in the planning stage but the sharing stage!
