I used to live there in Bullhead City. I moved there in 1985 and went to work at Lake Mohave Resort at Katherine Landing. I managed the small boat rentals there. I loved it there and still go back to play there. Before 911 you could drive across the dam. Also after 911 they closed Boulder dam and all the truckers that used to cross the dam to get from Las Vegas to Arizona had to come all the way down to Laughlin and cross the Laughlin bridge. There were several trucks that would lose their brakes coming down from Vegas and could not stop would end up in the river at the Laughlin bridge. I remember one was a car hauler and he lost some of the cars in the river. They finally put in a runaway truck ramp. I remember the casinos all had free boat rides from the Bullhead side to the casinos and back. The Riverside casino had a 99 cent all you can eat chicken and fish buffet.

Yes I saw the runaway ramp just the other day it looks like if a big truck hit it they would go right through it and then hit a rock pile jump that would launch them 20 feet in the air! I don't think they go down there anymore only because I haven't seen any big trucks in that area coming down the hill in the last two years.

To me the charm was staying in the Riviera side, and taking those little boat ferries over to the Casino side. You could walk from one to another along the river walk joining em all but a few The original casino had a big neon cowboy. After the bridge was built people could drive but the free boat taxis were still a better deal and fun. There was nothing between Bullhead and Kingman in 1980. By the 90s it all filled in and the lake Mojave had a big nps fee station. Oatman even looked like it was under suburb seige but remains as it was. Some people I knew worked at the coal burner power plant...it had a really bad steam pipe failure in the 80s, (people died.). Camping on the lake is great, far from the noise and lights.

Another beautiful day in the desert. 64 degrees, blue skies and no wind...couldn't ask for better weather! I've been visiting the area since the mid-80s too and boy have things changed. I agree that it's preferable to Vegas but I can do without casinos--the lure of the desert for me is the peace and quiet and natural beauty. Luckily there's still plenty of that on offer if you're willing to go a little way off the highway. Until next time, happy trails!

Every time I watch you videos I feel like i'm on vacation. Back in the summer late 80's early 90's my dad would stop in Laughlin on our way to Lake Powell. We would stay at the Colorado Belle. I would play video games in the arcade while my dad would gamble downstairs in the casino. I remember my dad winning buckets of quarters and bring them to my brother and I upstairs where the arcade was located. Hope someone buys the Colorado Belle and fixes it up for another round of entertainment. Best memory of Laughlin was walking outside with a temp of 117 degrees. Thanks Russ for another great video. 😃

A few years back , our three terrific sons put us up in the Tropicana and took us on that river dinner cruise for her mother's day present . She had the best time and was just ecstatic about the trip , the dinner cruise , and her boys doing that for her . Always wanted to take her back , but that crazy Covid farce shut everything down , and then when that was finally over it still took forever for things to open back up . She always talked of getting all of us together and doing it again . Sadly , she got sick and then passed this spring , and it breaks my heart we didn't get back there , it was one of her favorite memories .

My pops was a ww2 vet also. He also had some interesting stories but never and I mean never anything about the war. What an amazingly calm day there. When our son was young we would stay at Harrahs because of the great summer deals. We would head up to lake Mohave at a great little spot with shade and a great swimming hole. We would come back to the casino as it heated up too much. They had a great arcade there and always reasonable prices. We would get a room as high up as possible and hope for a monsoon with a good lighting storm. We actually watched a bolt hit a palm tree one night and burn it down.

We were just in Bullhead a couple of days ago. Ate at Perkins which for us older folks is a nice little sit down chain restaurant of medium price. I have long wondered about the Davis Camp for RV camping on the Colorado River. I do love the drive on 68 between Bullhead City and Kingman. Especially scenic the Eastbound way.

Russ - Have you been down to the NEW BRIDGE BEING BUILT BETWEEN LAUGHLIN AND BULLHEAD CITY? It's located approximately 3 miles north of the bridge near the Avi Casino and about 11 miles south of the 95/163 bridge near the Laughlin Casino Strip. This project will extend Bullhead Parkway from the point where it meets Arizona Highway 95 over to the river, across the new bridge into Nevada where it will meet up with Needles Highway. It's expected to generate a lot of growth down in that area.

Petroglyphs: Out of Laughlin take hwy 163 towards Las Vegas. About 8 miles out of Laughlin you'll see a sign for Christmas Tree Pass on the right. Take the dirt road (easy drive) approx. 2 miles to the the Petroglyph parking lot. The hike is an easy 1/4 mile walk or 1/2 mile round trip. There are no services so bring plenty of water on the hike to stay hydrated, pack it in and pack it out... Feeling adventuress: If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle you can drive Christmas Tree Pass from hwy 163 all the way to hwy 95, it's approx, a 16 mile drive one way. The drive is very scenic but do not make the trek in the hot summer months...
