There are more options Truck wise where you can get a shorter sleeper cab to give you more bed length and keep the same overall truck length, you can if only just you and a significant other if not just yourself is to go with a day cab and go the same wheelbase length so get even more bed length. If need also be you could just have someone else drive the larger vehicle separately from the tow rig for the smaller vehicle to minimize overall truck length, the other car would be an extra set of eyes for you on the road to make lane change and turning easier. For another idea look up "fifth wheel street - automated safety hitch" scroll down to more pics and the first is a HDT HHRV using that hitch system to make for bed space but beware it adds to overall length by around 5 feet. IF the tow rig is 21 and the trailer is 53, you are going to be more than 65 foot long but under 70. Another great and totally free resource is Heavy Haulers RV Resource Guide with tons of info and a Owners Gallery (Owner submitted photos and info) with many idea, one shows what looks like a 53 foot semi and tractor combo is in fact a custom 53 foot RV based on a Semi Trailer and has a link to the owners adventure blog website.

I didn't hear if you mentioned it or not but do you have a storage area on the truck for the ramps?
@halsar17298 жыл бұрын
Nice work and presentation. Are you aware of an option to put a handicapped lift chair in place of the passenger seat in the truck? And/or is there the ability to have a door from the back of the sleeper that could open to access the passenger door of the Smart car if loaded car nose to the port side of the truck (with passenger aboard)?
@rvhaulers8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question. Yes, we are able to place a wheel char lift on the passenger side - in the bed behind the sleeper. There isn't the space under the passenger door. We can place a door in the back wall of the sleeper to gain access to the inside of the sleeper as well. Please note that you would have to make the bed/deck a bit longer to have a smart car up there as well. We have to allow enough space between the car and back wall of the sleeper to have ample room.

That is a trail bike not gold wing which is three time's bigger and twice as wide too! In Montana length is 55 feet bumper to bumper ; to go longer it has to be cdl license. PS Honda 110 are hard to find hang on to it!

Greg, I can drive a semi trailer, But when you said you cant go over 65 feet. The road trucks are up to 80 feet. I know 53 feet is good for an 18 wheeler. But when you see trucks then you one you have with two axles, They get longer.. I don't know the total you can get.

For loading lengthwise, you mentioned that you might need to lengthen the HDT by about 5'. However, if you removed the DROM box (or made it so the nose of the car could go underneath the box, getting close to the rear of the sleeper), that would give you another 1 - 2', so you only need to lengthen the HDT by 3 - 4' instead. Another option, instead of permanently lengthening the HDT, is to use an Automated Safety Hitch setup. With this setup (and depending on weights), you could still single the HDT, put a vehicle on length-wise, and have the trailer riding on an Automated Safety Hitch system. They do make a version which can tie into the HDT's air-brake system (not sure on price).

i see your comments are 2 years old as i write this. Look up and check out article Automated Safety Hitch on Fifth Wheel Street, scroll own for more pics and the first one will be something you are looking for. If you already seen this article then I guess I am a bit late, if not, then get back to me to get some more ideas if you already have not built such a rig. As for pricing of the ASHS the average cost is around 10-11 thousand USD.

Definately could offer a 12 foot custom truck bed with pull out onramps
@timon0x319 жыл бұрын
Can you get the wider ramps in the same length, and rating, as the narrower ones for those that would feel more comfortable driving a smart car off?
@rvhaulers9 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately those are the ones they have certified for Smart Cars, or for the Double-Duty of doing both. The manufacturer is very careful about engineering and testing, and that is what they have available at this time.
@timon0x319 жыл бұрын
Gregg RVHaulers Oh, well. Would have been nice to be able to get wider ones for the Smart just so there was more room to drive down them even if needing the width is only in ones head:)

I see your comment is 2 years old, but check out Discount Ramps for alternatives that will and may just suit your needs. Unless that is what Gregg is using.

What can be done with the 3 wheeled bikes like the can am spider may need 3 ramps I guess.
@rvhaulers9 жыл бұрын
The Can-Am Spyder is 105 inches wide, so it fits up on the bed nicely. Yes, we would build the bed to accommodate three ramps (the narrower ones).
@mkrywanio9 жыл бұрын
Gregg, you may want to note that 2016 Smart Cars will be about 4" wider than current cars
@rvhaulers9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reminder Michael. I forgot to mention that. I have been building my beds for that possibility for a while. I have two chock positions in every bed (narrow and wide) so we are ready when the time comes!

Without necessarily referring to the Smart Car experience, have any of your customers started a page or blog about their over-the-road experiences? Thanks in advance.
@rvhaulers9 жыл бұрын
I am unaware of any such pages at this time.
@20351MA9 жыл бұрын
Gregg RVHaulers OK, thanks for the quick reply. I find myself very interested.
@Joshua79C7 жыл бұрын
One place to start and I have looked on it for such info but Heavy Haulers RV Resource Guide is a totally free to use site loaded with HHRV info, if you look through the pics of each owner rig in the owners gallery, some have links to their blogs of their building and one has a photojournal of his adventures with his family.

Hi, i'm intrigued by your laws, so you can drive that, with a RV on the back on a normal car licence in some states? Even upto and beyond 65foot?
@rvhaulers9 жыл бұрын
+weblefeck In most US states you are correct. When we remove an axle, it is only a two axle truck ( no different than a pickup truck ). Some locations require that you take a one day air-brake course. Some don't. Some locations require that you take a heavy-trailer lesson and endorsement. Each state or province has their own rules.
@weblefeck9 жыл бұрын
+Gregg RVHaulers That must make it super confusing! Here in the UK you'd need your class 1 heavy good licence for that with the RV on the back, we're also limited on length to a lowly 52 feet for a rig like this hence why most of our tractors are COE.
@lesgarten8 жыл бұрын
I've seen your roads, that ain't a bad idea. We were hit by a Lorry in London and had to chase him for 25 miles back to his barn to talk to the owner. He just took off, might not have known he side swiped us.
@ecmtrucking9 жыл бұрын
what about a mini cooper or a pt cruser?
@rvhaulers9 жыл бұрын
+Eduardo Casas Thanks for your question. Yes, we can load other vehicles. The only car presently short enough to consider loading width-wise is the smart car. If you take a look at the lengths of the cars you suggested, they are quite a bit longer than 102", so they need to be loaded from the rear, and carried length-wise. It can be done!

+Gregg RVHaulers Thanks for the reply and oh ok i was just curious about it.

Yes, just be aware some models are really too long to go width-wise.
