RWBY 9x04 “A Cat Most Curious” - reaction & review

Hey everyone! Here it is - my reaction to RWBY Vol. 9, ep 4!!!! We get to spend more time with our new kitty friend, and honestly I wasn't sure quite where they stood until later on in the ep! One thing's for sure though, they're definitely a RWBY fan now haha! We also get to meet the Herbalist and go on some self-reflective journeys. It was great to see our gang be so steadfast in what they believed about themselves and the world!! With the exception of Ruby, who's so lost and broken right now! :( I truly believe she will find herself throughout the course of this season! It's just hard to watch her struggle, you know? Sounds like we have more characters to meet, in addition to catching up with Neo and Jaune at some point.

I think I really loved Weiss’ answer the most. All three had great answers to who they are/what is a huntress, but Weiss stating granddaughter of a hero/daughter of a villain/citizen of a fallen kingdom/heir to nothing succinctly summarizes who she is - but the one thing that really hits home is the one thing about Weiss that hasn’t changed since vol 1: “I will be the one who defines my own name”. It was such a mic drop statement that I’m still in awe of it.

one thing I like is the choice of words, "granddaughter of a hero and the child of a villain" it is like how Weiss would only ever use "father" rather than any term of affection. Her and Winter reuniting is something I am looking forward to because you have to remember from Winter's perspective her sister is almost certainly dead.

I always found Weiss to struggle the least out of the 3 of them but I think that's mostly because I can't really relate to her as much as Yang and Blake.

"You can do whatever you want" is the same sentence Yang told her when she was depressed at the end of volume 3.

Oh god I didn't even remember. Those might've been Yang's last words to her before she went to Mistral. She might've been internalizing them all that time.

I love her old convo with Blake coming back up. Black saying “life isn’t like a fairytale” and Ruby saying that that was why they were there, to make it better

The conversation you were talking about was in Volume 2 Ch 10 when the Girls were all in Mountain Glenn with Dr. Oobleck .. Yes, this conversation is supposed to juxtapose with that one.

As someone else in another video pointed out. Rubys mirror image is bizarrely cruel in inflection, somewhat mocking almost. Rubys own idealistic optimism thrown in her face, and all the things she's never really sat and processed.. Her 'unwavering' belief that through it all they'll find a way to win. But no plans or ideas. And how utterly unprepared she was for this whole thing. And all wrapped up in the growing bitterness she never lets herself express

Ruby original reason to be a Huntress was to be a hero like in a fairy tale and to follow her mother’s footsteps. That didn’t age well.

And what did dear old Ozpin ask Ruby in volume 1 chapter 10? How can you expect people to follow you if you are not always performing at your best? And Ruby is really feeling that right now.

One thing I find odd about the self reflection talk is at 21:54 in the reaction. in that shot the inner monologue/self critical Ruby should be visible but is not, it is the only time it happens in any of the 4 conversations and we all know these writers and animators do not put details like that in by accident.

Ruby couldn't stand up to herself because she hasn't overcome her own personal challenge yet. The other 3 have faced their personal challenges and overcame them making them confident enough to face their pasts. I hope Ruby overcomes herself in this Volume and emerges stronger for it. I'm rooting for lil sis.

I am sure she will but first she has to get that facade of everything being fine shattered which is what we are watching, it is a hard but necessary step.

I’m starting to entertain some of the theories as to who Little really is… and those theories aren’t saying that she’s Ruby’s innocence.

Little is probably a reference to Alice Liddel and not much beyond that.
