Salem's goal: to die. Honestly! She is trying to divide humanity so they are divided, and bring the relics together to bring the Gods back so that they will see mankind is divided and are not redeemable and thus they will destroy the world. The god of light said as long as the world turns, she will live. So if she gets them to destroy the world she will finally die. That's just my theory.

And if that's true for either what do you think would happen? @@walterhellsing3399 personally I think Jaune will be the one to kill salem. When Ozpin asked jennie how to destroy salem she said it was impossible - but that was before this generation was born. If his semblance is to channel his aura and summon the pond of youth, that may be what's necessary to defeat the pools of darkness. Otherwise I saw the deliberate question "destroy" not "beat" salem or "defeat". I'm wondering why he didn't ask "how do I make salem see the light?"

Good and evil are human constructs, meaningless to such godlike entities. Even trying to say 'neutral' doesn't really work since it implies some kind of middle ground, but these guys exist outside of our morality system entirely. Humans are like an anthill in their backyard. Light just wants to build with his blocks, and Darkness likes to knock them down. If the blocks fall and crush some ants, neither of them care. Why would they? Maybe they'll sometimes feed the ants just to watch them scurry around, but even that is nothing more than idle curiosity. When the ants start to bite, they poison the whole colony to get rid of them and move on to something else. At no point does whatever the ants consider to be 'good' or 'evil' or 'lawful' enter the equation. Such things are beneath their concern.

But his daughters are from him and Salem, and they had magic evident by the daughter in blue, whose to say their curses of immortality can't be passed down, more lenient towards Oz's if going by the Maiden Heritage hazy rules. Why didn't Oz or Salem know? Well, how could they? If the implication of all four of them dying is indeed true, that would be that - to them they were dead, until Ozpin found their reincarnations and helped refine their 'gifts' or 'curses', depending on the person's view, as they called it, and Salem didn't know until later and kindled her sense of betrayal. If the Maiden's did reincarnate, how come they didn't look for their parents? If Ozpin's first reincarnation was anything to go on, perhaps its a more lesser degree than that: instead of past memories, its likely just their powers. Or, they don't remember anything and they are something of a brain-dead souls used like a weapon when attached to different aura's, or perhaps when Ozpin said 'Maidens choose themselves' its implying they only have a weak conscience enough to pick the next host, if there wasn't a chosen inheritor by the current host. Given they all died as children, thus didn't flesh out their powers or whatever is causing this pseudo-reincarnation. Since the powers are transferred through aura, its possible that because they died so young it could be something like adding an electric current to metal - flexible and powerful but not particularly solid, in a sense, something that could be added to something with ease. Cruel, but Ozpin's and Salem's fates were cruel already. And, food for thought: The reason why Salem can't be destroyed: Its possible that she's now too closely tied to Remnant, a force of nature. In a sense she is death in a way, symbolized by her affinity with Grimm, or if she and Ozpin together in the air before a crowd with auras representative of the two brothers symbolized anything, she is now Remnant's modern God of Darkness as Ozpin is, in a way, the modern God of Light, symbolically, anyway. Albeit, without the harmony of the proper Gods. Buuut: "What - but that one World of Remnant Episode!" As said in the reaction, or the general conveyance: "THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING!" My words: Its a fairy tale within Remnant, and volume 3 was pretty much the reveal that not everything was as thought to be right as before. Lengthy, but, just tossing my thoughts out.

Here's something interesting that I just noticed: The god of light appears as an Eastern dragon; long and serpentine, with antlers and whiskers. In eastern legends, dragons are wise, generous, and symbols of good fortune. They control the weather and do what they can to help people. But do your best not to anger them, for although they are patient, that does not mean that they will not harm you if you cross them. The god of darkness appears as a Western dragon: lizard-like, with huge bat-like wings and large, thick horns. These are the dragons that kidnapped princesses, burned down villages, and hoarded treasure. These dragons were seen as monsters to be feared and avoided, or slain, if you were brave enough. Quite an interesting duality.

Immediately what I thought when I saw the brothers as Dragons, and they also support each other in that sense as well; Destruction allows for Creation to spawn new life to populate, which in turn allows Destruction to take away the withered life and open niches. This equilibrium between the two shapes the life that lives in the world they created to be almost eternal, with too much of either being the end of it all. The planet was an empty canvas for them to fill, and while the God of Light created the Plants and the Animals, the God of Darkness out of spite made the monsters which destroy it all. Their final creation, Man, can walk the path of either Light and Dark, tipping the Equilibrium in either side of the spectrum. I also kinda feel bad for the God of Darkness, as living things like us are naturally drawn to the light and fear the dark, even though he also created humanity, and the first human to pray to him was only there to use him. You can tell he was eager to show that he was just as deserving of humanity's love as his brother, even if it meant bending the rules that they agreed upon.

The Dark God surprises me in how... understanding he can be. He started to be kind, realised his mistake and admitted he was wrong. The same cannot be said of many other people I have met. Mortality has its value just as death dictates the worth of life. Both Gods value balance, life without death is demeaned. He also has boss moments. Like that near genocide. Shattering the moon. Trashing Salem’s last demands. He might be my favourite character in this episode (not the whole series). Darkness, shadow, death. It’s the counterpoint to light and life, yet gives both beauty and meaning. It’s necessary.

Honestly I was extremely disappointed in V5, to the point where I was probably going to drop the series. Not everything is 100% there yet, but by Volume 6 chap 2 I was back on the hype and chap 3 fully reignited my love of rwby. I really think that Miles and Kerry deserve a pat on the back for this episode.

Also, say what you will about Miles and Kerry's writing, but their foreshadowing kicks ass. Back in Volume 1: "Man born from Dust" in reference to the second time mankind came into being. "We are but Remnants of a forgotten past" in reference to Salem and Ozpin being from before Remnant was created. Volume 3: "The Grimm dragon is a hint as to how Grimm are made" in reference to the God of Darkness, who made the Grimm, being able to turn into a dragon. "The girl in the tower" in reference to this episode and episode 2. Those two certainly love to play the long game with foreshadowing.

@@Mystrohan Yeah but that means the GoL is having a continuous effect on this world whereas the GoD doesn't (except through Salem and the Destruction pools, but that is not from his direct actions). GoL is influencing a world without collaboration from GoD (at least from what we know, they may have agreed on Ozpin coming back but it doesn't seem like it). Besides, without the Gods ruling that world, their balance doesn't really apply until they are summoned. The God's balance comes and goes when they do.

However, I'm not sure - that would mean that if and when they get summoned back, GoL will have some very fast and awkward talking to do. And I would definitely argue the Grimm are a continuing effect. I agree that balance probably doesn't apply - to preserve balance, the best choice would have been to remove Salem from the equation instead of bringing Ozpin back.

@@Mystrohan ​ I'm really not sure. GoL, when speaking to Ozpin, throws his brother under the bus (''at the hands of my brother'') and offered the chance of redemption himself, using only 'I'. But that could be because maybe only GoL is capable of creating recurring life at that level. After he uses 'we' when talking to Ozpin. All in all, for now I'm going to assume they worked together in reaching a decision that they are very much both affected by (the relics summoning them). I just need a bit more clarification on what the brothers want for humanity and remnant. What they wanted when they gave Ozpin reincarnation. They destroy it, leave it, and then come back for it. And it's not for humanity to grow without their interference because Salem, Ozpin, and the relics exist. I would say that Ozpin and Salem inherited the God's balance but Salem has always been more powerful (at least as far as I know, how Ozpin managed to start combat schools without her destroying them, I have no idea, except for maybe the silver eye warriors).

@Undying_LonelySoul I see Salem as another example of what immortality can do to a person based on the circumstances, drives and the individual. Let's look at Salem, as well as DC's Vandal Savage and General Immortus. Salem wanted freedom from those who had power over her. Vandal wanted to rule because he was stronger than others. Immortus wanted to conquer everything before he died. Give immortality to the latter two and they'll lose what humanizing traits they in a power drunk frenzy. Give immortality to a woman who wants to be free of the burden of living with her losses? I'd be surprised if Salem doesn't still want to die a little on the inside.

When she was turned immortal, the God of Light told her that as long as the world turned, she was destined to walk the face of the planet. When Ozma was reincarnated, he was told that if the Gods were summoned and humanity hadn't changed, then the world - not humanity - would be destroyed. That is Salem's endgame. That is the only way she sees to end the curse. Not to learn the value of life and death, but to have the world destroyed. It's a loophole that she plans to exploit.

Mick_ Gaming Even when Salem was human she couldn’t be stopped. She was made immortal because she didn’t understand life and death. Salem tried suicide and that didn’t work. During her scheme of turning the humans against the Gods, she had many men try to kill her to prove that she was gifted by these Gods but did she die after being struck down countless times, no. Literally no one can stop Salem, only herself. Salem was immortal before she was corrupted. She fell down into the pool because she thought it would end her suffering since the pool of life gave her immortality but it only made her worse. Even if you separate the Grimm corruption from Salem, she’s still immortal.

Mick_ Gaming Salem didn’t understand the life and death cycle even when she was human, even before the corruption. I do believe that Ozpin will have some way of getting through to Salem since they had a romantic past. But Ruby is still 14/15. She’s still training and she barely even knows anything about her power. Ozpin sent thousands of people to their death, that includes Summer Rose. Summer (I assume) was an expert huntress by the way Yang talked about her. Salem killed Summer even when Summer has the silver eyes. You can send Ruby to Salem and in the end Ruby will die. It doesn’t matter if a character has some power, NOBODY can kill Salem. And maybe Ozpin can get through to Salem but it’s up to Salem to decide. Just because she’s half Grimm half human doesn’t mean that if you take the Grimm away Salem will be stopped. She’ll just probs be the older version which is her human self but still immortal. It’s literally all up to Salem to decide.

30:15 The way I see it, there are three ways this can go that can result in Salem’s end. Though one is highly unlikely, and one explains Salem’s plan. 1. Salem redeems herself and only then can she rest, however unlikely. 2. Salem can potentially be defeated by being tossed into and locked in a relic vault for all eternity. If she could get in or out of them even with her magic, she wouldn’t go through so much trouble to find the maidens, even if she never “underestimates the usefulness of others”. Plus that would tie into the death of the witch in Hansel and Gretel, when she’s pushed into the oven XD 3. Gathering all the relics. She’s causing chaos across the planet so she can summon the gods back when the world is at its worst because she wants the world destroyed “As long as this world turns, you shall walk its face.” I’m the end, Salem’s main desire for freedom remains, and logically the only thing that could ever free her is Armageddon. Salem wants to die.

Remember that Ozpin was resurrected from something very similar, targeted at one person when the dark brother (or Kage, as I named him long before he ever became a thing) tried to "correct his mistake". I don't believe they would go so far as to destroy the very souls or afterlife of the people who got snapped, though I have no doubt they could if they wanted.

@@Vales55 To be fair, if she had any other family, I kind of doubt her cruel father would have kept her locked away so easily. Judging how quickly she chose to leave given the chance, I doubt she had any that mattered to her, apart from her children later on. Come to think of it, I doubt she would have ever been able to make any friends or really known any family apart from the father since she was locked away. Honestly the only friend she ever had was Ozma, which would logically make her even more desperate to bring him back.

I don't know if anyone has said this yet, but I don't believe the split between Ozma and Salem started because of Salem having a God complex. What it seems to me is, Salem believed her and Ozma could replace the Gods and build a utopia, while Ozma's goal was to bring the old Gods back to the world. I think because of what the Gods did, eradicating humanity and cursing Salem with immortality, she understandably doesn't want those Gods to return. I think the reason she felt betrayed is because of the fact Ozma still wanted the Gods to return after what they put her through, and despite the fact they destroyed humanity and essentially allowed future generations to suffer at the hands of the Grimm. I think it's likely Salem's intentions were genuinely good and she let her hatred of the Gods get between herself and Ozma.

@TheDyingLight Yeah, I can see Salem thinking Ozma had betrayed her, the one person she once trusted more than life itself. And after his death, she was completely alone, and unloved. And I think she cursed the gods even more for toying with Ozma's life, tearing them apart yet again. Though she's made horrific choices which led her to become the twisted madwoman she is in the present day, I do feel sorry for her, for this wasn't at all what she wanted in the first place.

Well think about it, both humans are technically immortal while one bares the power of darkness, while the other bares the power of light.... and the gods leave. Technically, once the humans returned life became no different then it was before the eradication happened. A light god, and a dark god and humanity. The only difference now is the two gods are fighting one another.

I doubt silver eyes would cleanse the corruption caused by a force of limitless destruction - that power was the God of Darkness' equivalent of the God of Light's pool that rendered her immortal. I'm almost certain that defeating Salem won't be in destroying or cleansing her of the Grimm element, but rather in redeeming her in the manner specified by the God of Light - "You must learn the importance of life and death, only then may you rest." The key to defeating Salem will be in finding a way to impart that lesson, making her mortal as per the definition of her curse.

One thing I think that is important to remember about Salem and her progression into the dark witch, is that she came from what was an emotionally abusive background. In fact, that was all she knew until Ozma. The gods gave her harsh punishments, but the dramatic irony is that we the viewers knew of Salem's origin, while the gods simply saw her as another heartbroken lover. To learn the value and importance of life and death wouldn't have been that difficult a task for someone else. But it was assigned to someone whose life was rather lifeless...whose life would only gain and lose value in the mortality of a man. Whose life more than likely normalized mental/emotional abuse. And that's what is probably the biggest tragedy out of all of this.

Ozma didn't really get dragged into it, the god of light offered him the choice because he was the best suited for the task given it was Salem, the god of light probably thought maybe Ozma could get through to her since the whole conflict started because Salem just wanted Ozma back. But Salem had changed far too much hence why the things went they way they went. Ozma chose to accept the task mostly because he found out Salem wouldn't be in the afterlife so he accepted the task to, for the most part in that spur of the moment, be with her. Ozma didn't really think about the warning that the God of light had given him when he said that Salem wasn't the woman he used to know anymore.

So my theories from this episode - 1) Their daughters inherited a little piece of their parent's immortality and their _powers_ reincarnate into new maidens when they die. 2) Ozma's children from his various lives started the Silver eyes lineage, they inherited some of his power from the God of Light which is opposite to the God of Darkness and so is anathema to the Grimm. 3) When the god of Darkness smashed into the moon on his way out his power fused into the site of impact creating Dust, which then fell all over the world. 4) Salem wants the Relics to be united so the Gods return, get disgusted by the world, and destroy it completely. She wants both to destroy the world out of pettiness and have another chance to hurt the Gods. No idea where all the new humans came from though...

Okay, so I just realized something: intentionally or otherwise, _the Brothers pulled a Frankenstein on Salem._ They created a monster, then scorned it when it wasn't to their liking. They ignored and denied its pleas for a companion/lover. Later on, the monster tries to find happiness another way, but gets pushed back again, this time from the one it grew to love (the old blind man in the original Frankenstein). Then, the monster, abandoned by its creators and seemingly betrayed by its "object" of affection, yet more powerful than any one being likely should be, rampages. All it does is wreak havoc and destruction. All it wants now is destruction, and termination.

I kind of feel like it's the gods fault though. They make Salem immortal to let her learn the importance of life and death while they took the life of ozpin twice and brought him back twice. It makes me feel like they should learn the importance of life and death, instead they pushed it on Salem. As gods they should have never given in to Salems wishes (I can understand Salem whishing to resurrect ozpin, after all she was human. I would have done the same), or atleast take responsibility for them toying with her loved one before her eyes. Instead they doomed Salems life, while they took the easy route and ran.

Well the god of death, was so happy that someone came to visit him, but felt betrayed that Salem only came for a selfish favour. God of Life understood her pain, but felt betrayed that she didn't listen to him and nearly caused his brother to betray him, nearly causing a war between gods. Even then, they technically made her wish come true, with Ozmar/Ozpin coming back to life through other bodies, but instead of being grateful, she planned to replace them and massacre humans, and didn't consider Ozpin's feelings in the matter.

I like the concepts of god in this one. They're literally playing The Sims with humanity, they give certain circumstances and say: ''Well let's see what will happen'''. When the game starts to get hard and messy they press the reset buttom and try again. (This is quite long so i tried to break it into paragraphs for easier reading, wanted to get all my thoughts out. If you're reading this Arnold, hi!) In all honesty this is the God's fault, now not to say they technically weren't justified in punishment but they took it too far. Honestly I want the gods to return and get a verbal beat down by someone (maybe even Salem) on their hypocrisy. How can the god of light truly understand Salem's pain? What have they ever lost? His brother is immortal, they have the power of creation, they have no idea what it's like to lose something or someone dear to them they can't just replace, at most they have sympathy not empathy. I would call them out that their so called perfection is their flaw, they judged Salem as if they were machines and not living beings. She was in pain they could never comprehend and enraged for reasons they'd never truly understand, they simply weren't human enough. I would also point out the hypocrisy of the god of light, the cycle of life and death can't be broken but you give a woman immortality (thus ignoring the cycle) and giving a man full sentient reincarnation (thus bypassing the cycle) for his own selfish reasons (the cause of which is literally his fault but he blames his brother when talking to Ozma). They gave a grieving woman in pain a harsh punishment and didn't seem to understand why she reacted the way she did, these aren't toys or machines, they're people. Why does the scorpion sting the frog? Because it is in its nature; they may have created humanity but they didn't understand it, i'd argue they were where Salem is now but simply had more power to rule with. In fact it is their fault humanity turned against them, if they hadn't made Salem immortal she wouldn't have united the kingdoms against them and humanity would've remained as is; yet they refused to acknowledge their own failings and passed it on to someone else. Ironically killing Salem was the merciful option and would've bypassed literally all of these problems, sure shows the infinite wisdom of gods. What they did to Salem was monstrous, and as such they created a monster. Allow me to end this with a question, who is more monstrous? The monster? or the monster that created it?

Brandon Overton I mean they did actually “learn” as the god of light said “we will from our failings” or something like that so who knows maybe they did and I agree that yes the gods are fucking dickbags but I still feel Salem has a part in this as the god of light is correct that Salem is selfish...kinda as she demanded the gods to revive ozma and manipulated the god of darkness to doing what she wants so in my opinion the gods were 65% at fault,Salem being 25% and Ozpin is 10% due to him running away from Salem and not trying to guide her away from the darkness

It makes sense that since humans lack the blessing of the Gods to use magic they draw upon the remains of the previous humans that could. Using their destroyed bodies mined from the ground like the fossils of long dead creatures we use in our own world for fossil fuel.

Now here’s a story I’m going to tell About a young girl that fell under a spell Her name was Salem and I will not skim How this girl was cursed to become the Queen of all Grimm In a Kingdom, set very far away In a tower was where she spend all of her days Imprisoned all her life by a dad with no chill Nothing to do but practice her magic skill Until a man named Ozma busted her out They made a pretty good team there was no doubt They then set out for all adventures ahead But Ozma got sick and poof he’s dead Salem begged for him back to end her strife But the Light God said that’s the circle of life She went to his brother and got her man back But the Gods rescinded and she launched an attack They made her immortal because they’re total wads So she chose to lead an army against the gods They left after killing all the humans for treason Oh yeah I forgot they were Dragons for some reason After some years people came back with no magic Faunus were there too but their lives were more tragic Salem was secluded to hide her disgrace Until Ozma returned but with a new face With her lover back in hand Salem gained a new ambition To Lead the world, but that was not in Ozma’s mission Regardless of that they worked to make the people ogle Then they had some kids, counting four in total Things were seemingly great for our favorite witch Then their kids starting showing a magic twitch Ozma tried to leave with them to avoid damnation But had to fight Salem in a bloody separation Salem was left alone again stewing in hatred And Ozma kept coming back with his worldview jaded So that’s the story we did not skim How a lonely girl became the queen of all Grimm

Guessing Salem wants the relics so she can bring back the gods and either do one of two things 1: Attempt to kill them 2: Let them judge humanity as failures and let them destroy the world entirely in hopes she can finally die Also, Jinn is probably right, he can't beat Salem. But the reasoning he got that answer is Ozma's choice of wording, if he had said "How can Salem be beaten?" he would have gotten an actual answer instead of being distraught by being told he (as an individual) cannot beat her.

Feel so bad for not trusting Oz I know he lied multiple times but look at the events that happened in this chapter. Honestly the man has lived a life of torture for so long having to watch loved ones die as he passes on and retains all the memories of all his other souls. I can see Oz not wanting team RWBY and Qrow to see his despair in knowing salem is unbeatable at least to him. And I can see him doing his best to keep hope alive. I wonder if this is why raven said Oz was a lost cause. This has been my favourite chapter the show made so far and I hope and wish the best to everyone who supports and loves this show. Thank you Monty for creating this world, thanks Miles and Kerry for continuing to expand on what Monty started, thanks to CRWBY for all the hard work in producing this and finally thanks to the community for supporting RWBY and helping it grow to what it is now. I have watched it since the start and I am so glad to see how far it has come, this chapter brought tears to my eyes because it really felt so powerful to me that a small idea one man made became one of my favourite stories of all time. Salem is Immortal, not Ageless, not someone that will live forever but with a body that will age normally, she CAN'T die, she has infinite life and can't age whatsoever the only thing that can stop her right now is the MOST cliche of the cliches and is being hit by a "Power of Friendship" beam or Attack or to find a way to purge the Pool of Darkness influence in her and Redeem in some way.

Salem was very selfish Yes, she did anything no matter the cost to see Ozma again, but... I don't blame And here's why Despite she was very selfish and thanks to her the first mankind in the world was cleansed, she didn't have anything to do with the rest. After everyone was eradicated, all Salem wanted to, was to die. She didn't care anymore. She just wanted to die... Her mistake was to fall on the god of darkness' pool And its still not her fault, because she didnt know she would become grimm After she corrupted, that wasnt salem anymore, she was just another grimm with actual mind and the desire to destroy, and for that to occur, it needed the immortality, which the god of light gave her.
