This volume was the last Jeff Williams worked on as he retired from music making before volume 9 and Casey took up the mantle and became RWBYs new composer.
@undeathghost56272 ай бұрын
And as a nod forward to that this is the first RWBY Soundtrack to have a song that he took no part in. Awake is by Ok Goodnight, Casey's band. It also technically wasn't written for RWBY but was chosen because the song is so very VERY appropriate for Cinder. Which is why it's played in the background during the final confrontation between Young Cinder and the Huntsman that trained her.

the last thing he worked on was actually for RWBY Arrowfell he wrote and composed the song Everstrong

So for those who may not know, the last song is “Awake” by the band Ok Goodnight, which is Casey Lee Williams’ band. The song (which plays during the fight between Cinder and Rhodes) was the first (and so far only) song in any RWBY soundtrack that wasn’t written for the show. It was released on Ok Goodnight’s EP “Under the Veil” and later appeared in RWBY.

iirc the song "treasure" played when the two groups reunited after being separated. I think the song kinda fits both Nora and Yang since during the separation Yang even talks about her thoughts with Jaune that is implied to be about Blake and Nora talks about Ren and her relationship with the rest of her group.

Friend ALWAYS makes me cry! All Penny wanted was a friend, and when her wish came true it was only for a few months
@undeathghost56272 ай бұрын
More than just a couple months. AS the song tries to communicate. Penny's wish was fulfilled the day Ruby called her friend in Volume 1. Her getting to be "a real girl" was nice and felt like a completion of her Pinochio arc. But at the end of the day... she's *always* been a real girl. That's why her role in Volume 7/8 is about teaching *winter* not to be a machine. Because Penny stopped being a machine the moment someone started treating her like a person.
@marieporter94882 ай бұрын
@undeathghost5627 I said a few months, not a couple months. I was including the months she had with Ruby at Beacon, and the months with Ruby in Atlas (before the night when everything went wrong)

@marieporter9488 I guess that's fair. There's also quite a lot of time between those two that Penny would still have that friendship (even if Ruby thought she was dead). But fair

For Every Life makes a lot of references to previous songs and openings, and I love that about Jeff's writing for songs in this show when he does that. As for Treasure, it was the song that played when the two groups (Ruby, Nora, Blake, Weiss, and Yang, Ren, Oscar, Jaune) reunited. Friend is such a mood whiplash song, and I think the artist for that picture was A.G. Nonsuch, who does a lot of RWBY and Arcane fanart. Awake was by Casey's band Ok Goodnight, and wasn't written specifically for RWBY, but they submitted it and it played during the Cinder vs Rhodes fight.

- For Every Life - Favorite OP of the show musically and visually, finally dethroning V2’s OP. The way Casey growls out “some roses” each time is just superb. - Sky is Falling - Episode 4 during the bike chase. This doesn’t really have a specific character in mind and feels more like just a general theme for the volume (and foreshadowing). “I need therapy” was definitely a mood after the volume was said and done. Crwby has too much fun dealing out emotional damage. - Be Strong and Hit Stuff - During the JNRO + Winter + Emerald vs Ironwood fight in Ep 12. Definitely a Nora song, with perhaps a bit of Emerald in there. A refreshingly lighter song given the rest of the soundtrack. - The Truth - Played in episode 6 during the Cinder flashback. Very short but it honestly gets across its point rather nicely. Nowhere else you could really go with that. Love when Casey’s voice gets all eerie. - Treasure - Played in episode 11 during the reunion. It’s a bit generalized for what couple it’s specifically talking about but I definitely view this as a Bee song, Blake’s answer to All That Matters which was very much Yang’s perspective at the time back in V5. Again, Casey’s range as a vocalist is just insane. - Friend - This was just a for the crew to rub salt in our wounds even during the end credits. A Penny song. How dare they. Like this song is literally designed to hurt. But it’s such a sweet Penny and Ruby song. All the V1 callbacks. Owwww. God, I’m so sad we won’t get more with them. All the feels, indeed. I’m literally crying. - Awake - Episode 6 actually during the Cinder vs Rhodes fight. This is by Casey’s band OK Goodnight. Like ‘Not Fall in Love With You’ back in V3, they decided to use it for the show. Not my type of music but no one can deny the talent. And with that, V8 is in the rear view and we move on to V9. I’m so excited for this man. It’s… ooh boy.

@definitelynotdefinitive2 Be Strong and Hit Stuff is Nora's song. Direct quote from episode 3 when she has a mid-life crisis at the age of 18. Treasure plays when Ruby and Yang reunite after Ozma nukes the whale. Also, let me just say that Casey's vocal range is phenomenal. From Triumph and For Every Life to Treasure and Mirror, Mirror. So many genres too! Edit: why do I even bother trying to tag people anymore lol

To be honest, I still remember the moment I first heard "Friends" at the end of volume 8, I was at a friends house, watching the episode on my phone and suddenly I hear "do hugs always feel this warm"... If I had been alone in the room I would have collapsed when I realized it was a Penny song. And even after years, it still pulls the heartstrings to hear those words. For "Be strong and hit stuff", it's a Nora song, the fact that we had no clear end to the song, is a good way for me to show that Nora's path isn't finished. But listening to it again, and seeing that it play when the fight with Ironwood, I think that might go well with Emerald and Winter too, saerching to rehabilitate themselves and find a new way after cuting ties with Cinder and Ironwood.

Hi! I’m the one at Sirs&Madams that made the videos for Jeff and Casey that you just watched. So I wanted to give you some details of why this playlist was so different. 1) this OST dropped out of nowhere. It was heavily delayed due to some personal health issues within the Willams family and they needed time to work through that and a pandemic was also still happening which kept people out of studios etc. So there was no time to commission artwork or put it all together because I literally had a single day. That’s why the “album cover” was the graphic for the beginning tracks . In fact Jeff didn’t send the lyrics until I was almost done making everything. Prior to that we were crowd sourcing on our discord to make sure everyone heard the same things for lyrics and if we were in a bind I would text Casey. 2) “FRIEND”… a few days before the last chapter Jeff emailed me and said “oh crap we need to have something for the end song. Do you usually commission artwork or what?!” Since usually the end song was released with lyrics on KZbin to give everyone SOMETHING. I told him I commission art unless I find something in the show to screen cap that works as an image. His replied (paraphrasing), “I can’t tell you the end of the show but i have some notes if you commission artwork but I can’t tell you anything about the final episode” So he proceeded to give me some very lose ideas and I contacted my friend AG_Nonsuch and told her what the deal was. We came up with an idea and she sketched out a rough idea within the hour. I sent it to Jeff to see if it was along the line she was thinking and his reply was, “ok this made me cry… which I guess if fair play because I’ve extracted so many tears from the RWBY community for all these years of the show”. He then said in his email, “crap we have to come up with a title.. the song hasn’t even been named yet.” And that’s how the “Friends” artwork was born. Later Rooster Teeth asked if they could use it as the official artwork for the single and we said “absolutely!” … they offered to pay for the use of it since I commissioned it but turned it down. Happy to let them use it considering the collab with Jeff and how we all felt about the song and Penny. Last thing, Jeff did mention how scoring and writing the music for final Penny scenes was full of tears form everyone as was writing and recording “Friend”

One of the lines in Friend that really gets me is "the face of a friend that won't leave". Makes me think that Penny had people that she thought were friends in Atlas when she was built and was being worked on but then when they were done with their job they just vanished and she saw that as her friends abandoning her. Ruby was the first friend she had that was real and she was committed to protecting her at all costs. 😥

@undeathghost56272 ай бұрын
So we're late enough in the series that it starts to be difficult to "Tell you" what songs belong to what characters at times. The William's have always made it clear that the songs are very open to interpretation and we know from experience that sometimes they are foreshadowing things we don't even know about the characters yet. That being said the large base of the community has linked the following ideas to the songs and they are played during these scenes: (some more concrete than others) For Every Life - This song is, as expected as the Volume's OP, sort of telling us the story of this volume in advance. Since you didn't use the Flynt video as reference. Something he does in his lyric video for this song is he actually highlights certain words throughout the chorus with certain colors that we associate with characters. The chorus literally lines up many of the characters that die in this volume and also help us understand the feelings of characters that don't. "Some ROSES (red) will never bloom" - Ruby's expressed feeling of being unable to enough this volume (something we've never seen from Ruby...). "Some dreams will rot on the VINE (yellowish?) - Vine martyr's himself to protect Mantles citizens. "Some lives will END (green) much to soon." - Penny, RIP no need to elaborate. "Some evil will never EVER (crimson) die" - Salem, kind of her whole shtick. "Some wars will not end in peace." - this one is simultaneously the vaguest and the clearest... foreshadowing? A warning? Lots of fan speculation here. "Some HEROES choose the wrong side" - Ironwood and his entire story arc for the last 1.5 volumes. "Sometimes it's worth it all to end the fall and FIGHT FOR EVERY LIFE." - What our heroes choose to do at the end of this: Lay it all on the line and try to save *Everyone*, even the ones who may not have deserved it (Ironwood, Jacque, The AceOps, everyone was supposed to survive if the plan had gone perfectly.) The Sky Is Falling - This plays during the bike chase scene when Yang/Ren/Jaune are trying to save Oscar from The Hound (Silver-Eyed Grimm). Speaking to the chaos of losing control of things in your life and desperately just trying to hold on to some of the things you know and reflecting that into our story with the literal chaos of Grimm popping up everywhere, Grimm doing things our heroes couldn't even believe, and facing head on the scale of battle they're fighting for the first time. I actually associate this *MOST* with Ren, personally, because he is the one who feels the most "lost in the chaos of it all" in this volume. Be Strong and Hit Stuff - This plays during the fight where *All* of our Heroes team up to fight Ironwood and simultaneously/seperately the AceOps (minus dog boy). About believing in what makes you you and having faith in your own ability to stand up for what you believe in. While I will say that you guys cut an interesting point that it isn't *out of place* for Yang. The song is largely associated with two characters who had some pretty big arcs this volume: Nora and Emerald. Nora finding herself and putting more value in what she brings to the team (Hence the title stealing her line "Be Strong and Hit Stuff, that's all i'm good for.") Emerald gets the highlight of the other half of this song... "Redemption is yours... if you follow that path". Emerald finally did the thing her heart has seemed to want for a long time (The first signs being as early as Volume 3 when she mentioned that it was "almost sad" seeing the Fall of Beacon live). She finally got the will to get herself off team WTCH and be the better person. The Truth - This plays during - you guessed it - Cinder's flashback when she becomes a servant at the Atlesian Inn. This song actually gets it's full length in the show from start to finish because its the shortest "song" (not a background track/leitmotif) written for RWBY. I was actually a little sad we didn't get the classic "more verses not in the show" that most songs have for us here because I was curious if it would shed more light on Cinder's life. We got that later though in the best way possible. But yeah the songs clearly about Cinder before she became the bad bitch she is now. Treasure - Plays when teams RWBY/ORNJ reunite, the song ending just as Emerald is spotted by Ruby. Kind of speaks to the idea that "home is where the heart is" and that even when seperated they constantly wish to see each other. While the general feel of the song can apply to essentially the entire teams. The song more specifically tends to be associated with Yang and Ren most. Yang because this arc showed her breaking off from Blake (Who she clearly deeply cares for) and Ruby (who she is very happy to see again in the same scene). and Ren because he's finally coming to terms with how shitty he has been and just wants to see Nora. The sad piano hits really hard when Ren asks where Nora is. Friend - Plays during the credits at the end of the finale. The song.... as you two said yourself, is a beautiful wrap-up of Penny's characterization *since volume 1*. When we first met her she was this weird, quirky robot girl that nobody (except Ruby) could see anything normal in. But Ruby took a leap of faith and treated her like any other person - called her friend. This song is beautiful on so many levels but for me the message I find the most heartwarming is the fact the song makes it very clear that Penny's wish was granted *when Ruby chose to be her friend*. Not when she was turned into a human. That was nice. We know she loved getting to actually feel a hug. But at the end of the day that didn't really matter to her. She just wanted to be treated like any other person. And while it is certainly painful the first time you hear it and you realize who's song it is... the song is truly a heartwarming send-off to one of the best characters in the show. RIP Penny. You will be loved and never forgotten. On a less RWBY standpoint - a beautiful message about how just being there for a friend is all they ever really need, often. Awake - Plays during the showdown between Young Cinder and Rhodes (the huntsman that trained her in the flashback). This song is actually the first song in RWBY History to have no contribution from Jeff Williams. The song is by Ok Goodnight, the band Casey Lee Williams is a part of/Sings for. The song was not actually written for RWBY at all but chosen to be included because the songs message was extremely appropriate for Cinder. This is why some of the lyrics don't have the exact same "weight" that many RWBY songs do where every word seems to have lots of meaning behind it. That being said, this song still certainly has a lot of deep meaning. It's about that path to darkness/sin and accepting the bad parts of you. About coming to terms with yourself and "waking up" and not letting others manipulate and control your - no matter what. This song brings us full circle from what broke Cinder to what she is now. While the song does play in her flashback I actually think the finale of the song beautifully brings us back to when Watts gave Cinder what for this volume. He put her in her place and made it clear that for all of the "strength" and "power" she has amassed she is a giant pain in the ass that has done more harm then good for literally *Everyone* involved. She fails team WTCH, she fails Salem, she fails to do good, she fails to do bad. But most of all she fails herself time and time again. Thats really what hits her in his speech to me. It's Cinder realizing that for everyone she has done and has accomplished she quite literally has failed to do what she wanted for herself. She broke free from the chains of slavery and control only to give herself to another master - Salem. Thats why I think Cinder used to question on purpose. Sure she used it to do something as little as "outplay" team RWBY. But I think the long term goal was making sure Salem couldn't have it. So she could have a victory over Salem - all with the clever "Team RWBY used the question". Ontop of that Salem told her to keep Ruby alive (something Cinder never wanted) and she said "Neo killed Ruby". So she effectively got *almost* what she wanted and got none of the blame. This is why Salem doesn't punish her (if Salem saw through her lies or not is up to debate and honestly kind of doesn't matter to Salem) because at the end of the day all Salem REALLY wanted was the Staff. She doesn't need the Maiden powers other than to open the vaults. Cinder gave her the relics freely... so Salem hardly cares that Cinder failed to take the Winter Maiden powers. Great music on this soundtrack. As of the end of this volume, Jeff Williams has "retired" from writing the music for RWBY and has passed the mantle onto Casey. Next volume is her doing and I suppose its a spoiler but she does *not* disappoint. Look forward to ya'lls volume 9 reactions and the follow-up soundtrack reaction!

As much as the subject matter is a bummer, The Sky is Falling is one of my favourite songs (and imo one of the most well executed) of all the volume soundtracks. It's a banger, the lyrics/melody/rap feature all flow together seamlessly, and there's no awkward bits like in other songs where it feels like they're forcing something to sound natural, it just sounds effortless.

For Every Life - The full intro. Practically every line is a reference to some character or song. The Sky is Falling - Played when Yang, Jaune, and Ren were chasing the Grimm Hound carrying Oscar, specifically the guitar solo starts right as the back up centipede grimm the Hound calls for burst out. It's supposed to directly contrast the second song from last Volume's soundtrack Touch the Sky Be Strong and Hit Stuff - plays when the final plan starts and they have their fight with Ironwood, which is interesting since as I see others have pointed out it was more focused on Nora (the title and line in the song is an exact quote from Nora) but while she was involved in that fight she didn't seem to be one of the major players. But as for the song, it is all showing that Nora isn't nothing by herself and without Ren, she needs to figure it out but she is still something. The Truth - plays during the montage of Cinder doing the cleaning chores in her flashback. I feel like as short as it is it almost didn't need to be included in the soundtrack, especially since the soundtracks generally lengthen all the songs in the show but not that one Treasure - plays when the two groups reunite at the Schnee Manor. There's probably so many relationships in the show this can touch on to some degree. Friend - plays during the final end credits. I remember when I watched the finale after the episode I was just sitting their lost in thought for a bit as the credits started, wondering what could happen next season and feeling sad about Penny's death, not really paying attention to the song as I was more just waiting for the end credit scene...then the line "do hugs always feel this warm" cut through my thoughts and I had to stop it because I immediately realized this was a Penny song and I needed a few moments to regain my composure because it had broken me. The cover art for the song was actually designed by a fan and is pretty sweet. The line "Paint our nails; Try on clothes; Talk about cute boys" is a reference to something that first Weiss said to Ruby sarcastically when Ruby tried being her friend but then later Penny also said when Ruby first agreed to be her friend. Awake - plays when Cinder fought her mentor Rhodes. It's one of the very few songs not made for the show itself. Instead the main vocalist for the show, Casey Williams, is also the lead vocalist for her own band called Ok Goodnight and this is one of their songs. But despite being unrelated to the show itself it does work pretty well for the context of that scene. The line "Take my hand and take my life" is at the same moment that Cinder kills him. Pretty much the whole Volume's music tells you exactly how this Volume is gonna go.

My favorite songs from volume 8 are For Every Life and Friend, but the lyrics and instrumentals of all of them are very good.❤ - I like how For Every Life gives us a better idea of how our heroes blame themselves because their plans to save Mantle and Atlas didn't go the way they wanted (Ruby and Yang's plan) and at the end the plan with the staff It didn't work as expected. - Be strong and hit stuff It's a Nora song, in fact you explained it very well with the fact of not tying all your happiness to someone, something that Blake advised Nora about that we can have people who are part of us but that we don't forget the rest. Nora said the phrase "be strong and hit stuff" when she destroyed the door in Atlas and got the scars and in her conversation with Ren. - Treasure plays when everyone gathers at the Schnee mansion, Casey has said that there are songs that are obvious which character it is and others that are not, but all the songs are up to the interpretation of the fans. From my point of view, it looks great on any character like Ruby and Yang, Ren and Nora, Blake and Yang, etc. Since everyone was separated and worried about each other, at the end of the day they are each other's treasure. 🥺 - Friend was the second song after Red like roses part 2 that made me cry, the image portrays the lyrics very well, Penny's desire to have a friend. 😭 It has many references to past events such as "My wish came true.That day you appeared. And called me friend", referring to Penny and Team RWBY's first meeting in volume 1, where Ruby called her "friend" and their beautiful friendship began. "combat-ready" is another of Penny's typical phrases and having it appear in the song breaks me haha "I'm so excited. We'll do so many friendship things. Paint our nails. Try on clothes. Talk about cute boys" It's another line taken from volume 1😢 Friend feels like a letter to Ruby, her first friend who helped her discover that she has a heart, a soul, she is real and not a machine. Ruby is his dream come true. 😭It pains me to think that Penny died thinking she had lost many of her friends.

I loved the soundtrack for this volume and hope you'll enjoy Volume 9's. It's Casey's turn to be the musical guide in that one. I think you're going to like it. And I will give a shout out to the incredible content creators & AMV makers who have made outstanding AMV's for RWBY over the years!! Not just from the soundtracks but from so many musical genres. I do hope you guys look them up sometime, just for kicks. I'm up to offer some suggestions if you like. 🤣 Anyways, look forward to a different vibe with Volume 9, Ken & Beth.... Til then, STAY GOLDEN FOLKS!! 🫡🌹❄️🖤🔥🥲

This Volume doesnt have much happy songs and it makes sense but yeah Sky Is Falling is like the Chicken Little movie suddenly had the darkest ending out of nowhere.

Personally I think Vol 8 is the weakest OST cuz it feels somewhat like Jeff Williams had already checked out. It has the least amount of full songs since Ok Goodnight had to put forward a song and of those songs Friend and Be Strong and Hit Stuff are really the only stand outs. All That Remains I like but it's not the best OP by far and is a better opening with the visuals which ARE among the best in the whole show.

I haven't been able to watch any of your Volume 8 reactions, and frankly probably won't watch 9 either. Not any fault of yours, but because of the previous episode, which I waited until now to comment on. Because it's agony. Three and a half years since they committed to this atrocity, the single worst, most pointless and downright awful narrative decision in the entire series. The entire running time of Volume 5 couldn't commit more of a sin than what they did to Penny. And I HATE how many people sweep it aside, or can do anything but sit in silent shock at the end. Hell, Blind Wave were all grins by the end, which made me HATE them... I love Penny more than I do most REAL people in my life, which makes me feel bad sometimes. I've lost real living friends who never made me feel the sense of injustice and constant hurt that Penny's betrayal by the writers did. The first two years, I couldn't go a DAY without thinking about it, without being in gasping panic. I think I feel like she's an actual daughter of mine. That's the closest comparison I can make to this anyway. Life has no color, food has no flavor. If I weren't a writer working to undo this, with the ability to pull it off, I think... I'd have done something drastic to myself years ago. Because I just couldn't escape the pain. I can think of multiple loopholes to what she went through that would let them have their cake and eat it, instead of bringing her back to life just to throw her away a season later. With her sickly, elderly father unaware of ANY of it, mourning, his own life bereft of meaning. Pietro should have given the last of his life to restore her, allowing her sacrifice to earn her own humanity. How does this heartbroken old man keep going? Why would he? It's heartless, and just shuts the door on everything that comes with Penny experiencing a human body at last. We get nothing. All so CRWBY could have another body since it's been since Pyrrha that a major character died. Inventing this stupid narrative that people are "making Penny's choices for her" as if her friends and father were supposed to let her indulge her guilt and give herself up to Salem or Ironwood pointlessly. It all sucks, and no, even from some stupid tragic character angle, it's not good writing. Entirely unnecessary, I will fight ANYONE. I just can't STAND how so many people accepted it, moved on. I can't, I never will. There should have been a DOGPILE online over it. So many people, including the writers, totally okay with her being a pawn, a narrative device. That's all the writers ever saw her as. They never loved her as she deserves. They don't deserve her. That's why I'm writing and animating an alternative, because my life's purpose now is to show everyone something better, and get them to say "that's the REAL deal." Because from this points onwards, RWBY doesn't feel real to me anymore. It's a thought that can't be thunk, a thing that cannot be. I hope you'll be there to see my creation, made with all the love I have in me.

Be strong and hit stuff is written for Nora. She has that identity crisis early in the season where she talks about how she is just the person who is strong and hits stuff
