Today we start on the half cage for the mgb! This is a custom design I'm bending on my roguefab bender. I have never built a real cage before but I've been practicing a lot with the bender and it paid off. This cage is going to fit very well and be super custom. In today's video we will be making our plates, main hoop, and rear supports. We will finish it out in the next one with cross bars, door bars, and harness bar.

Hey Caleb, whomever is behind the video direction and editing is doing a great job. I'm really enjoying this one, to the point that I actually had to pause the video to write my comment! Keep'em coming brotha.

As a suggestion, you could adapt something like Chrysler Town and Country motors for the rear pop out windows so you don't have to crawl in the back around the cage to pop them open or close them every time. Duckman Cycles and VW Garage did this on his Bug build a while back before it went off to paint. I think he started with T&C motors, but might have switched to some other minivan window motor.

Hey brother you should cover every coolant connection in the car that is near to you. Wrap anything around those connections in case any of them blow it will save you from hot coolant spray. I say this just because you have a rear mount radiator just cover all of it with something

Hey when you weld the tops of the bars take a large metal can and hose clamp to make a splatter shield to keep the head liner nice Just cut the can open and leave some of the bottom on to have a spot for the clamp to hold on the can and the bar Your welcome

Yeah roll cages are great but they’re made for race cars specifically because they don’t have any upholstery inside and it’s a lot easier to deal with a flat painted surface as opposed to trying to do some nice upholstery work with sound deadening!!!
@BUILTOFFICIAL
@BUILTOFFICIAL 2 жыл бұрын
The interior will be mostly rwcecar nothing too fancy. Plenty of racecars have door panels and heat dampening so that's what I'm going off of

Loving this build, the editing and music is also really good, but hearing the F word around 12:20 was a bit disappointing as I was watching with my kids and they caught it :( hopefully I miss heard it, as I just kept the video going to not push attention to it, but I’ll have to be a bit hesitant now to watch them together

couldnt handle it, looked up the lyrics , the ones in question are second line from the bottom "Pretty Carolina, oh-oh, oh-oh Stone cold stunner, she was a winner Started workin' at the diner, oh-oh, oh-oh Serves as a reminder to count your blessings 'Cause this town ain't fair (This town ain't fair) It'll put you down and leave you there Don't make 'em scared, yet it's the ugly truth Are they comin' for you? Yeah, yeah (Nah)"

@@BUILTOFFICIAL I appreciate you showing the lyrics, by no means was I trying to throw shade at your channel at all, been here since the beginning of the mr2 build :) I’m glad the words weren’t what I thought, just didn’t want to throw attention to it during the video by rewinding and listening to it again IN CASE it was the F word

"You don't want to hit your head on the tube" As opposed to.... the road? The window? Another car? If you're moving around that much you're going to hit your head on something hard.
@BUILTOFFICIAL
@BUILTOFFICIAL 2 жыл бұрын
I did think about this but im not going off my own logic on that one... read several books and articles on cages and all of them said if the car will be on the street at all don't do overhead bars because in regulation they are always designed with a helmet in mind. I also looked at the cage in the new 911 gt2 which comes with a cage and is street legal and safety tested without a helmet on the dummy and they do no overhead bars so that was the deciding factor for me. If the car flips the main hoop should keep my head very far from the ground, further than if the car didn't have it like it comes from the factory, add in a 4 point harness and I think I'll be good. Again this is just coming from what I've read from professional cage builder that which I am not

@@BUILTOFFICIAL in Australia you can't get road registration on a car with a full roll cage. It's difficult with a half cage.

Why build the box? Why not just weld the cage to a plate? I see no structural strength purpose for that.

If you're going to build a cage, even of its not for competition use, I don't know why you wouldn't cast an eye over a regulations book. Even if it's just a drag racing spec sheet. Which is the loosest class of cage. If you don't follow a few basic rules for cage building its just for show and will give you no safety or structural benefits.

I did, drew the design from champ car and the porsche gt2. Also looked at some off the shelf cages for the mgb specifically

@@BUILTOFFICIAL I know. You knew about building foot plates and boxes. Most people don't though. Although I'm not sure about having bends in the rear legs. I build cages for circuit racing and rear legs must be straight and parallel.
