It achieves stock performance at less than 200W and barely sees 70C while gaming. I'm sure the 4070 can also be tuned, but I don't think you're going to shave off that much more power from it and still achieve stock performance.

What needs to happen with the VRAM stack moving forward: Professional series->48GB+, 90->24GB, 80->20GB, 70->16GB, 60->12GB, 50->8GB. Entry-level cards have to come in at under $300 and be scaled up from that point.

In an ideal world a xx50 card would cost $150 - $180 and xx60 cards ~$250, ti ~$320; xx70 cards ~$450, ti~$550 maybe $600; 4080 ~$750, ti ~$850 and 4090 ~$1000, ti ~$1200 Then the Vram as it is right now wouldn't be that outrageous. I say going forward you're right with low end having at least 8GB and xx60 12gb but I'd say (talking NEXT generation not what we have now) the 5070 should have 20GB and 5080 already 24GB, 5090 32GB because there is obviously headspace. In any way 16GB should be the standard for anything of quality. Even 5060 could have a potential 16gb version, given that they put 12gb on the 3060 already. Had a really painful time trying to find a decently priced deal with the Starfield bundle, ended up getting super lucky and catching Amazon clearancing their AMD reference 6950XT stock at £519 but that deal sold out in about 2 hours. And there's almost no other stock except XFX 6800XT/6900XT (6950XT sold out) and can still find the MSI 6800 at a decent price but that's it. This kind of perf. bench makes more sense to me. It will never happen that you will own the top product and even if so, for just 3 months, maybe. It is only good for once to see monster CPU with monster GPU paired just to see what is possible, but that's it. We upgrade more often GPU, so show us the performance for a mid-system for god’s sake. If there is really a CPU limit it will hit us as well(maybe earlier), and we know it does not make sense to upgrade anyway.

My card, RX 5700 XT, is normally a 225W TDP GPU. In most modern DX12/Vulkan titles, with a very mild undervolt, I'm averaging 140-180W. TDP usage is exagerated nowadays, when everyone should be running undervolted anyway. The insane TDP's is when you overclock and increase voltage at the same time.

Recently picked up a PowerColor Liquid Devil 6800 XT for $416, $459 after shipping/tax. I am blown away by how good it is. With an OC/UV to 2600MHz @ 1070mV it is usually +/- 5% versus the 4070 depending on the game, but in Starfield it's closer to a 4080 than a 4070. With an UC/UV to 2150MHz @ 850mV it's still fast enough to run most games I play at locked 4K60, and at those settings it hovers around 36-40C and only draws 120-140W. The card is really flexible with how you can run it, and it can either be fast and hot, or absurdly efficient and cool. RT performance is only downside about the card, it's basically 3060 Ti RT performance. However, AMD just released FSR3 with frame generation, and it's actually not crap, which was surprising. Can't wait to see what it does for RT performance once it gets more game support. If your budget for a GPU is $400-$450, you should strongly be considering a 6800 XT.

This video was for me. My 2017 GTX 1080 PC was in need of some love. Despite still being able to handle 1080p ultra like a boss, so technically there was no need to upgrade even after all this time, but I was ready to move into 4k. Well, I didn’t have the budget for an entirely new PC so I decided to take a stab at just upgrading the GPU and then maybe next year upgrade the rest. I went with the 7900 XTX even though it was probably overkill for my 6 year old system but I wanted to be future-proof. (Thankfully I had the foresight to get an 850 watt PS 6 years ago 😅.) To my surprise, I saw tremendous improvements in FPS and I’m now playing games like Hogwarts Legacy In 4k at 60fps even with my 2017 core i7 CPU. In fact, according to afterburner, my CPU is still only about 50% utilized! So yeah, I definitely made the right decision. I can confirm what HC is saying is true. If you’ve got an older PC, go for the best GPU you can afford now and you’ll still see tremendous gains, and then upgrade the rest later. Just think, I was about to give up on PC gaming altogether because I thought I had to spend $2000 for a new machine. Nope. And now I can look forward to fully unlocking the potential of my 7900 monster. But for now, he’s doing just fine and I’ve finally entered the realm of 4k and it is glorious!
@brohvakiindova4452 Жыл бұрын
Little heads up that your CPU running at 50% doesn't mean anything while gaming. Games can hardly ever utilize all cores, which sometimes means you have funky situations where your CPU runs at 20% load but actually one core is completely maxed out and others run almost idle. You will definitely see improvements with a better CPU but 4k is still very GPU limited so the improvements won't be impressive. Upgrading little by little is definitely not a bad idea. My next build will absolutely recycle my GPU, SSDs and PSU, most likely whole case setup too. Basically I'm switching out Mobo, CPU and Ram and get a new SSD for the system because I'm not risking failure.

While you did state the reasons for it, using the 13700K for the 4070 is a great shout for testing the hardware with its active equivalent processor, I feel the same should have been done for the AMD cards? As a comparison, the best paired CPU for the 6800 XT from what I have learnt would be a 5800X/X3D. More commonly paired together, significantly different results, and also provides a much fairer testing scenario. For that reason, personally I couldn't say your results are an accurate enough representation for the matter at hand, but please don't let that take away from what you have provided because the insight is still good! I have a 6800 XT that I've absolutely overclocked the snot out of, and I've never seen it draw more than 274 watts. It may spike above 300 W, but again I've never seen it. I've had the card since March of last year. Overclocking these cars, outside of just putting them on rage mode, yielded slower and more erratic frame rates and frame times than just leaving it at stock. I don't know if it's the power delivery system, or lack thereof, limitations in the silicon, or limitations in the bios at that point, but back to my original point: in a very very niche scenario, you MIGHT be able to get a Radeon 6800 XT to hit 300W.
@MrNelahem Жыл бұрын
a 6800XT will certainly hit 300 watts I use to have one. The issue with RDNA 2 is all reporting software doesn't show full power usage. This was fixed in RDNA 3 where you see actual TBP. If you are using GPU Z or afterburner etc on a 6800XT its not showing you full power draw.

If your buying new, I wouldn't rule out the 4070, its crazy efficient (amazing for SFF builds) and well... next gen, BUT I think we need a second to take a step back. While I don't rule out the conclusions of the video, its important to keep in mind we are comparing the previous gen to the new 40 series. The fact that there are discussions around this topic means the new gen is not competitive enough nor is the price justified. I know this has been echoed a million times, but if u need this for work or are reeaaly scratching for more performance to play video games or wanting to take ur hobbies further then just buy it already geez. Also, I understand, nothing is black and white. If you live in a region with well supplied used cards (and if ur comfortable or done research), go for used. Perf/dollar is better and you'll save a lot of money. If you live in a region where electricity bills have skyrocket go next gen 40/7000 series. Also, I honestly believe garnering any conclusions from 1080p results with this performance tier might as well be seen as an outlier as I don't think justifies it (in the context of not just benchmarking cards head to head to remove bottlenecks to compare performance, because we are using this with 'older' cpus). Unless the game is unoptimized or is needlessly demanding, you are going to get 60+fps even at 1% lows, and setting a limit to that (like with RTSS) you'll rarely see any dips in performance. And if your coming from something like a 2070, and planning to upgrade to one of these cards, unless you have a 1440p+ or 90hz+ display, I'd recommend revaluating your upgrades.

I just upped my Ryzen5 2600x/ GTX1080 to a Ryzen 9 5900X(new)/6800XT(used), now in late 2024, after thinking about staying on AM4 or getting a new platform. Im very happy with my decision, both CPU and GPU are a massive performance increase. You can buy a new 5900x for under 250€ (Europe) and its still a really good 12c/24t! 6800XT I paid 280€ used. The reason for the upgrade was the old combo was getting left behind min 60fps at 1440p, and now well its like having a brand new PC that runs everything. For the people that also struggle with making a similar decision, if you have the budget go for AM5, otherwise Im pretty sure this 5900X/6800XT will comfortably let me skip AM5 and wait for AM6 (or whatever crap Intel will have on the market in 2027+). PS. IDGAF about ray tracing.

Im happy with my MSI 4070 so far. Switched from GTX 1080 and keept my 650W power supply and my 10700k is not bottlenecking the gpu, so im glad i've spend ONLY 650 euros. To be honest, im glad i didn't bought the 4090 or RX 7900 XTX. A entire system overhaul only for strong GPU could kill my budget. sry 4 my english

would the RX 6800 XT do better if it had a AMD CPU to enable Smart Access Memory?

Great comparison actually helpful for people buying now. Thanks a lot !

I still have my GTX 1070 in my system. Everything else has been upgraded but it's about time for me power up the graphics card. Been thinking about swapping to team red for a while now.

I'd stick to 4070.

Definitely grabbing the 4070 now. FPS per watt is priority right now. Thank you!

Ive got a 6800xt from MSI for almost a year now and undervolted it. Playing everything in 1440p max settings and never seen the card run beyond 230watts. Highest Ive swen it was playing Ghost of Tsushima was about 210-230watts. On games locked at 60fps it does not even go beyond 130watts

With my AMD R7 5800x, I've been stuck on a RTX 2070 Super for much longer than I was hoping. This was a nice look at what I can expect when I am able to do a drop in replacement of that card. But as my main desire is to get as much performance and fluidity from Flight SIm 2020 in VR, I feel like I need to save save and save some more so I can go balls to wall. That means an RTX 4090 at this point in time, but boy that price is a wallet destroyer.

If you get a good deal on a 6950 XT, be sure to enable SAM (above 4G decoding) in your BIOS, as you'll get a little extra free performance from comboing that with your 5800X.
@panadatm Жыл бұрын
Don't sleep on the 6950 for VR, it performs pretty well on my Reverb, honestly the 4090 just isnt worth the 3x price. If you want maxed out MFS I think its smarter to buy a mid range card right now and wait until we get truly amazing vr performance for around 1k
@Viking8888 Жыл бұрын
@@panadatm I hear what you are saying, which is good advice, but it takes me years to save for anything, so I have to get something I know will go the distance because I have no idea when I'll have enough money for another upgrade. I landed up going with AM4 in the middle of last year (knowing AM5 was coming out fairly soon) because the cost was too good to say no too. Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Hero mobo for $130 and at the time the 5800X for $300 sealed (It was selling new for nearly $400). Both parts were from a couple of fellows on OfferUp. I'm just waiting patiently (one day and not patiently the next) to see how things play out price wise with AMD and Nvidia's cards.
@Viking8888 Жыл бұрын
@@TheRealSkeletor Thx for mentioning that. Unfortunately, I can't use ReBAR with my RTX 2070 Super which sucks, but that is definitely something I will enable with whatever GPU I do land up getting.

im in a simular boat im still rocking the 1070 ti, and i cant quite find a suitable replacement 650$ for a 4070 is a bit too expensive, when i got the 1070 ti i only had to play 500 for it

bro I just got this card from best buy for $200 bucks, they gave me starfield and bought the i3 13th gen cpu with some ddr5 ram for $150 and I can basically play all games on ultra.

At one point I managed to undervolt my 6800 XT and it was around 200 to 220W MAX. So with a good undervolt... No need to be afraid of the consumption.

How much Voltage?
@GentlyUsedFrog Жыл бұрын
@@memoli801 I vividly remember playing GTA V and RDR2 online at that time which were the only games that didn't behave well with my undervolt (1050mV and down) so I had to create separate profiles for them, but I don't remember the exact voltage. Probably between 1000 and 1030mV. I need to try again soon.
@GentlyUsedFrog Жыл бұрын
@@memoli801 Just searched a bit on how to undervolt it again and see if there was new tutorials, on a 4 months old vid I saw a guy saying he put 900mV and 2000mhz to the core. Seemed weird to me but after trying it on a few games I can say it works very well. I'm certain some games won't like it at all but haven't found any so far.

Like saying don't upgrade that Pruis to a Lambo, you'll use more gas, and insurance will cost more. People wanting an upgrade by buying a whole new build has to pay attention to the things that matter, who ever said that the upgraders don't? Don't want to burn another light bulb then stay out of the upgrade cupboard. The 4070 is gimped, of course it's only 200 watts (like a Prius) why would it not be cheaper? That's the problem here.

If you really wanted to report on "Power Consumption" then you would put the results of the GT 710 up there. But you know it would discourage people from buying the 4XXX series. I get sooo many chunks in minecraft with the beast that the GT 710 is.
@brkbtjunkie Жыл бұрын
A fair comparison would be flops per watt, in which the 4000 series absolutely crushes the 710.
