Gr8 interview, I am 53 and training for a pump and getting the blood in the muscle, mostly higher reps with a squeeze and failure but also lower 5-6 reps controlled and squeezed like Robby Robinson was talking about. I am a old school competitive bodybuilder and I just can't lift the massive weights anymore but still want to feel good and look good. Got my share of injuries but I am having fun in the gym now at my age. Thank you John and Dave for a awesome interview.

Great guest. John is full of knowledge. Ive noticed when weights start to get into the 250-300 lb range even high reps builds well. Im trying to go even heavier this time back around but in my 20s I used to do sets of 30 reps with 205lbs and grew like crazy. Im thinking if I can do 30 reps with 315 Ill explode.
@Sirgromulus

I concur. Perhaps because of his education or the fast that he has worked in corporate America for most of his career while doing bodybuilding almost "part time" patiently over many years, he is the thinking man's bodybuilder.
@thegriffinsden3383
@thegriffinsden3383 5 жыл бұрын
You really shouldn't judge it based off a certain weight. 250 to 300lbs could be 50 % of your 1 rep max or 70% for someone else. It's the percentage of your one rep max that determines intensity. They talked about doing warm up sets with 20 reps but their working set the last one was done with 6 to 7 reps with 80% of their one rep max.

My views completely changed on exercise selection when I read Doug Brignole’s 800 page book recently “Physics of Fitness.” Would love to see him come on your show Dave! Doug explains the physics and leverages involved and how much load is actually applied during an exercise. Tons of respect for John as I remember following him and talking to him before he turned pro and he has worked harder than just about anyone I know. 🙌

Here is the deal. If you go heavy Year in and year out for decades, you will have to have shoulder replacements, knee surgeries, back problems, elbow tendinitis, etc. My suggestion is heavy while your young and don’t stay in it very long. Maintenance in your latter years. Take it from a 59 year old that has lifted 40 years and needs a shoulder replacement.
@leevancleef358
@leevancleef358 5 жыл бұрын
Good advice and sorry to hear that Randy! from 54 yo lifting for 35 yrs - achy knees and shoulders but no replacements. What I have found is that I really like Resistance Bands....serious legit ones...with varying levels of thickness/resistance. One arm curls with bands...just bench pressing the bar with bands attached to pegs...Tricep Pushdowns with diff band levels -Man what a pump and easier on joints!

As a 25 yr old Thank you so much for sharing your experience and beliefs, I don’t believe in going really heavy I’m a bodybuilder not a powerlifter. I focus on hitting one or two muscle groups and leaving my stomach completely out of it, John said “I love squats and deadlifts” not dissing him but I’m sure he doesn’t love his wide waist and neck half as wide as his shoulders

Muscle memory is amazing. I've been training for over 20 years and took a year off from lifting. My strength and size returned and surpassed the point where I stopped in 4 months. The muscle cells are the largest cells in the body with a volume thousands of times larger than most other body cells. ... Since in vivo imaging has confirmed that cell nuclei are added during strength training and not lost upon subsequent detraining, the nuclei might provide a mechanism for muscle memory.
