This might be his recording setup but in the final mix… I can testify that his vocal processing is much different. My good friend John Nathaniel is the principle mixer for One Republic and I’ve seen the mixes (Logic Pro) Although Ryan’s vocals are very well recorded by the time John gets the sessions.
@homestudioacademy

For sure! I’m confident he sends his tracks (specially for OneRepublic) to a Professional Mixing and Mastering Engineer. This was just a breakdown of what he shared in his Songwriting course. That’s awesome that you’re friend mixes for them. “Oh My My” is one of my favorite OneRepublic records 😊 Also, would you happen to know any of John’s go-to vocal plugins? I’m sure our community would love to learn from him.

that's a neumann U67, not an 87... hence the multi pin connector and not just a normal XLR into it...

When he's traveling he'll just buy one for the studio. Funny story, I was signed to EMI back in the day, and over at the old EMI (Now Capitol) building in Brentwood, TN. They have a U87 that Ryan just bought for the writer room/studio because he was traveling and at EMI for a writing session, and wanted to use one. So he bought it and just let them keep it.

Nolan this is helpful for when i finally start singing to annoy my neighbors lol. Another thing, do you find it better if you sing sitting down or standing? and also do you find it better holding the mic than standing in front when singing into it ? For some odd reason if I hold a mic meaning my SM 58 I have more control.
@homestudioacademy
@homestudioacademy Жыл бұрын
Hey @mystikrebel1321, I prefer to sing standing up because that way you won’t be slouching (bad posture) or pressing on your diaphragm which helps with breath control. The Shure sm58 is hand held dynamic mic most commonly used on live applications. If that’s what you like, go for it handheld. However, i prefer the sound of condenser microphones and put them on a mic stand.

theres no way he's using only CLA vocals to achieve that sound.., look at his waveforms they are super compacted, by that i mean he's probably using unisone console from the apollo twin and recoding into pro tools with already some pre amp + compression + EQ and then on the inserts use the autotune live for just tiny pitch correcting and not printed and also the cla vocals to make everything sound like its a finished product with delay and stuff.. but you can't achieve that sound with only CLAVocals I know mic is great and everything but 100% sure he has some effects in the unison console who goes straight to the pro tools already printed on them.. ryan it's a really dynamic singer he's not like a whispering one.., those waveforms without compression will be all over the place.
@homestudioacademy
@homestudioacademy 2 ай бұрын
@@yuli8897 I bought his course and on it, he plugged his Neumann U67 into the Apollo, did not add effects, then pulled up Pro Tools and added the CLA vocals to his audio track along with a noise gate and Valhalla Reverb, that was it. Keep in mind that was his songwriting template, not what you hear coming from a One Republic record. I’m positive he sends his songs to a mixing and mastering engineer.
@yuli8897
@yuli8897 2 ай бұрын
@@homestudioacademy yeah no I understand this a simple songwriting tutorial but watch the waveforms, they are very even and he's not like whispering or something the way he sings it supposed to be really dynamic even soft talking will make your recording peaks jump everywhere, theres something he's not telling us, definitely using unison uad before hits pro tools with some compression.... theres no way those dynamics are so controlled, and I know it's not from the cla, because cla it's on inserts, its something which it's coming from the UAD...

@@homestudioacademy I know !!! but that compression it's not reflected in the waveforms.. again, those waveforms are insanely level it, that only can happen when you are doing some compression before entering pro tools.

I can't say for sure as I wasn't there for the whole course but if this is the main take-away from that course, I'd be left feeling a bit short changed I think. There's no way this is a full comprehensive vocal chain for pro vocals... for a start there's no de-esser in the chain, and the granular control over EQ and compression should be far greater than what's here. If this is a chain for slapping onto demo tapes then that's more than fair enough but I wouldnt pay for a course to listen to that?
@homestudioacademy
@homestudioacademy 9 ай бұрын
This is just the vocal chain he uses to track/record vocals. I’m confident that he still sends his tracks to professional mixing engineers to mix his and One Republic songs.
@Reginaldborington
@Reginaldborington 9 ай бұрын
@@homestudioacademy maybe, I just dunno why you'd put reverb on the recording stem if you intend on porting it over to an engineer... I'm sure the engineer would demand the raw unedited waveform? I'm new to all this but picking up bits n pieces like this along the way...
@homestudioacademy
@homestudioacademy 9 ай бұрын
@@Reginaldborington I think it’s because he uses everything for tracking but then once it’s sent off for mixing, the Mixing Engineers most likely uses his own plugins and effects.
@Reginaldborington
@Reginaldborington 9 ай бұрын
I see... ish... actually I don't see haha I don't know what tracking is? I assume it's a word used to describe keeping check on your own vocals as you're recording them? So you have a fair idea of what they might sound like once properly mixed/mastered?
@homestudioacademy
@homestudioacademy 9 ай бұрын
@@Reginaldborington tracking just means recording. So what I was trying to say is that he records with his vocal chain but then sends it off for mixing and the mixing engineer may use other effects instead.
