Seriously awesome content in this video, the tips are spot on. I remember just earlier this season I was having issues with consistent, smooth edge transitions from heel to toe side. When I really started looking at and thinking about what I was doing in my turns, I realized I wasn't finishing my toeside turns off properly. I was understearing them, which led to me overstearing my heelside turns, in turn making that edge transition slow, clunky, and more difficult, esp. on harder terrain. That first tip of making sure you finish your turns off properly is simple but huge. Thanks for videos like this!

Hey Ryan, do you ever talk about "un-weighting" the board? I came from a skiing background and un-weighting really helps initiate the next turn when moving from edge to edge. I have found the same with snowboarding. As you finish your turn you should feel the board un-weight, which allows you to change edges then transition to make the next turn. What do you think?

@RyanKnapton
@RyanKnapton 6 жыл бұрын
I think both hands just depend in the type of turn and what your doing next. Constantly having em in one position won't work well for spins out, and and just depends on the turn size your making. But in general lead hand should be near nose or more 'open' towards where your going on heelside turns especially IMO.

Tip at 7min (knees), for me, i found my inward angle on my knee was down to lack of glute activation in my stance. I noticed the same thing happen to my knees when i was squatting - now I’m practicing a slight clenching of my butt as that’s what stabilises your knees and gives better stability throughout my core. Still WIP

I have trouble linking my turns. I know Katie says that you'll know when the turn finishes when its smooth and there's no more uphill force, but at 7:12 it looks like she finished her turn early to avoid hitting that steel column. What exactly did she do to force herself to finish that turn to go on her toe edge to avoid hitting that column? Did she force finish her heel edge turn early by lifting her toes up thereby getting her weight on the flat edge to transition to the toe edge? Or did she finish that heel edge turn by standing straight up? I hope I'm making sense. I've been watching a lot of videos on different channels, but I've yet to see an explanation on how to link carves and turns.
@theinfamoustuba
@theinfamoustuba 4 жыл бұрын
Without seeing you on your snowboard it is going to be difficult to diagnose why you're having difficulty linking turns, but in my experience, it is usually a couple things- I'll start top down. Many people over rotate their upper body to counteract the fact that they do not truly trust their board to actually turn. On heel edge they will rotate their shoulders way too far out (front shoulder toward heel edge) and keep their shoulders there, which makes it really tough to come back around to toe edge, since all the pressure and rotation of the body resists the turn to the new edge. (I call this an "open" stance, since the upper body is exposed relative to the nose of the board and the direction of travel) the opposite can also be true where the shoulders are rotated way too far toward the toe edge, causing great difficulty getting back to heels. (A "closed" stance, since the shoulders are turned, and more of your back will be facing in your direction of travel) pay attention to where your shoulders are in relation to the board. They should lie pretty much parallel with the board when you are starting to link turns. Think of the width of the board as a boundary to your shoulder movement side to side. One thing that can help is to put your arm up in a cocked position so that you're looking directly over your bicep and elbow in the direction of travel and using your head and elbow to consciously steer where you are going. This is a temporary fix, since your turn initiation should really be from your lower body. Make sure that your weight is pushed toward the nose of your board. It is common for people having trouble turning to favor their back foot (leaning opposed to the direction of travel) which makes it very hard to turn quickly. Think about leading into turns with your hip toward the tip, and keeping pressure on your front foot. If your are constantly leaning with weight on your back foot, you'll find it very hard to change edge. Bend your knees too, and stay relaxed from the waist down. The more relaxed you are, the better. Pay attention to the tension in your knees and calves and try to consciously reduce it. Hopefully that helps you!
@chrisp524
@chrisp524 4 жыл бұрын
@@theinfamoustuba Thanks, Joel. That makes sense. I am relying too much on my upper body and over rotating, which makes me over commit too far on an edge; kind of like riding a bicycle where I'm trying to turn right but I'm leaned so far left. So, In the video, at 7:12, did Tsuyuki naturally finish her heel edge turn to toe edge, or did she she say, "oh, shit. There's a pole there, gotta finish my heel edge early and go on my toe edge"? I guess my main question is how to finish a turn early if some dangerous obstacle pops up out of nowhere. I will try your tips and try to use my hips to turn.
@theinfamoustuba
@theinfamoustuba 4 жыл бұрын
@@chrisp524 on that turn, I would call it an early change to toe side, but it looks like it was intentional and not to avoid the pole. Typically you wouldn't use a turn like that to dodge an obstacle. (Although I wouldn't know her intent for sure without asking her and I dont know how I'd get ahold of her... haha) a turn like that usually is used to generate high edge angle quickly and put a lot of force through the turn. It takes a bit of practice to nail that early edge change without crashing. That's the way I see it anyway.
@chrisp524
@chrisp524 4 жыл бұрын
@@theinfamoustuba Thanks, Joel. The tips helped, my transition from edge to edge is better, but I took a fall and tore my tricep; it hurts as I type this. probably should've watched videos on how to fall properly first. whelp
